Following was released by De Rotterdam BV and the Steamship Rotterdam Foundation:
Steamship Rotterdam leaves Gibraltar for Cadiz on December 23 for repainting hull and superstructure. In July last year the ship arrived in Gibraltar after being laid up at Bahamas for four years. In Cadiz the ship will go into drydock for a metamorphosis. In February 2006 she will leave Cadiz with her original coloured grey hull.
After one year the s.s. Rotterdam is on the move again. Much has happened since a consortium of Woonbron and Eurobalance acquired the ship on June 30. The four tenders of the ship were brought to Rotterdam for renovation, and two former lifeboats of the ship were offered by Holland America Line. On the same time selection started of parties to operate hotel, restaurant and cafe-facilities, and 232 cabins were scanned for use as hotel and short-stay facilities.
Besides that, cooperation has been started with Rotterdam Marketing to promote the ship as a high-rated attraction. The s.s. Rotterdam will contribute largely to the tourist attraction of the city of Rotterdam.
A lot has to be done to bring the ship back to her original condition. Cadiz has been chosen for the refit of the exterior of the ship. There she will be repainted in her original colour en regain the name Rotterdam . The new owners aim to banish any maintenance of the hull for the coming 15 years. The steamship will remain in Cadiz for about 6 to 8 weeks. Her departure from Cadiz will be made to a big happening.
