Hi - We will be in port Christmas week. My wife and I usually catch the ferry between Charlotte Amalie and Cruz Bay. I noticed that it is now 'temporarily' cut back to two trips per day. Will this still be the case Christmas week?

It has returned pretty much to its regular schedule. You can find it at http://www.**********/general_usvi/interisland_ferry/

Be aware that during holiday weeks this ferry system can be overwhelmed.

We were on the Navigator - Thanksgiving sailing and there were 6 ships in port. We spent hours almost 2 hours in the hot sun waiting in line to board the ferry. When we first arrived the person in the ticket booth closed up to help on the dock and told us to get in line and buy our tickets on board. Well, lots of others got in line behind us only to find out that when the ticket booth re-opened later you had to get back in line and buy tickets in order to board the ferry

The whole operation was very poorly run on the day we were there and we lost a lot of time transiting back and forth. Not worth it in my opinion!

We are scheduled to be in St Thomas on the 15th of December. We want to take the ferry over to St John. I wonder if we would be better off taking the taxi over to red hook. We want to be able to spend enough time in St John, and not feel rushed. Any commets or suggestions? Thanks!

I suggest that you take the ferry to Red Hook. Since the ferries leave on much more regular basis, you have control of when you get there. On the way back you can take either - we took the Charlote Amalie ferry back to get us nearer the ship (although we still had a short taxi cab from the ferry to the boat).

So not being familiar with all of the locations here, you take one ferry to Red Hook (which is on St. Thomas?) and then from there take another ferry to St. John? How much time should this take without huge lines? Thanks!

You can take one ferry FROM Red Hook (St Thomas) to Cruz Bay (St John).... then you can either take the ferry from Cruz Bay (St John) back to Red Hook (St Thomas) or to Charlotte Amalie (Also St Thomas and closer to the ship)

You would take a taxi from your ship to either Red Hook or Charlotte Amalie for either ferry. The drive to Red Hook is longer but the ferry ride to St. John is shorter

Thanks that makes sense to me now! I just couldn't figure out where all of these places were on the ferry loop!

We just returned from St Thomas Dec 11 and it turned out to be cheaper to go from downtown than Red Hook. Taxi to downtown was 4$ ferry to St John 8$ taxi to Red Hook 10$ ferry 4$ It was a very quick ride to downtown and we caught the 9AM ferry easily. The ferry ride is beautiful. We caught the 2:15 ferry back then decided to walk back to the ship. Took about 35 min. Easy walk even saw some iguanas on the way.

Good point, however, the ferries run much more frequently from Red Hook and would be more convenient in the morning. So we are thinking of going over to St. John from Red Hook and maybe back to downtown. See some different sights both ways. Looks like the 2:15 return was put back on the schedule, that's good. Thanks for your info.
