Has anyone ordered the sandwiches from room service to take on an excursion? Should I order them the night before or in the morning?

Depends on where you go. Some ports do not allow food to be taken off the ships except for prepackaged food. (boxes of cereal) Mostly its the Eastern caribbean that has a problem. Just read your cruise newspaper to see if food is allowed off in your port.

But to answer your question- We called the morning of the excursion for our sandwhichs. You want to order stuff that will holdup. Check the buffet in the morning for fruit.

Thanks serene56, I'm renting a car and going to Chichen Itza and I want to pack some food so we don't have to stop. Our time in Chichen Itza is limited with the drive time.

Hubby did this when we were in Bermuda. He ordered late and had me bring his sandwich to him-his excursion left across the street from where our ship was docked and he was araid they would not wait for him. I saw the security people look at me funny but no one said anything. Then I found out later it was against their law to bring food off the ship. Should have known better-I knew we wern't allowed to bring fruit off ship when debarking ship because of US laws. I am just glad they didn't decide to cart me off to jail.

My advice is eat lunch early or have a late breakfast brunch on ship( it is not like we will get that hungry missing a meal with all the food we eat on ship) or spend a few $$$s on lunch while on shore.

Remembering the excursion I took to Chichen Itza, lunch was included.

Excellent point about the local laws. You'll draw the attention of US Customs if you try to take food off the ship when you disembark, why would you think foreign ports would be any different?

Sounds like a good way to increase your chances for food poisoning...

Thanks for all you advise. I've only been out of the country a couple of times and I was young so I didn't know that most countries have a law against bring food off the ship.

Pack some zip lock bags, go to the buffet, and load up on fruist and cheese and bread stuffs.

Nobody is checking your bags when you get off the ship.

If you choose to economise this way, so be it. There may be signs saying don't take food off - but it's for your own personal consumption. It's not like you're going to be selling it to strangers! Or throwing your fruits pits alongside the road.

Use common sense and have a good time!

Just a thought...New Zealand does not allow any food to be carried ashore. They have dogs at every port to ensure that ALL passangers comply.

To whomever said you can take food off the ship is completely wrong, and Mexico is one place that's getting very strict about bringing food off the ship. When our ship stopped in Cozumel and Progresso, it seemed that every five minutes the cruise director announced over the PA system that absolutely no food was allowed off the ship. They had agents checking bags and dogs were also on the dock.

Todd: the cruise lines do check bags for food in the ports that do not allow foods. In St Thomas there were tables full of food that was now wasted.

It's true that the food would only be for your personal consumption - but the laws are not there to keep you from selling food to the locals. They are there to protect local agriculture from food-borne "visitors" - parasites and diseases - which, after you consume your apple or whatever and throw away the core, could very easily be transmitted to local crops and decimate them. Some of these countries do not have the high-tech pesticides and the like that we have in the U.S. and their crops are not as resistant as ours are. The global spread of agricultural diseases can be devastating.
Just buy your food in port. Or, eat a late, big breakfast and wait it out until dinner (it's not like anyone on a cruise is coming off the ship hungry!)
