TheHammer reported in his recent review of the Grand Princess that the Princess Theater smelled of sewage during his entire voyage. It was so bad, he said some people stayed away from the shows.

To anyone currently on the Grand - Has this been remedied?

I will ask a cruiser that is presently onboard the Grand to go "sniff it out" and report back to us.

'Cause inquiring noses want to know !!!! :D

we are on the grand now.
there was a sewage smell yesterday when we boarded and explored the princess theater. however, there was no sewage smell at the show last night or the shopping lecture this morning.
of course this may have been covered-up by the prevalent smell of cigarette smoke everywhere---but thats another topic.

Thank you princessbride and minnesotacruiserdc for the responses.

I don't know which is worse - sewage smell or cigarette smoke to non-smokers.

Minnesotacruiserdc - have a wonderful cruise. I'm looking forward to hearing more about your trip.

Thanks again.

We just got off the Grand, and there was sewage smell in various places, included the theatre, but not all the time there. It seemed like that was a problem at various times in various spots, such as the ladies room on deck 7, and on deck 15 in an area where there are loungers, but it is not around a pool. This was an off-and-on thing there, but enough to be annoying. Thankfully, this did not happen in the restaurants.
As far as cigarette smoke goes, we actually found it less obtrusive, other than in the casino, where I had to move tables because of it, but that has happened to me before on other lines. My husband also mentioned that he thought cigarette smoking was not as noticeable on this ship, (which is one of the few good things he had to say about Princess).
The reason I would possibly not choose this ship however, is because, although we enjoyed all the ports, tendering to 3 out of the 4 was annoying. It just puts a damper on the day when you have to start off with a hassle getting off, and we had priority tender tickets, and it was still annoying.

Thank you Robinsilver for more info on the sewage and cigarette odors. I'm glad that the odors seemed to dissipate and did not appear to be a long-lasting problem in any one place.

We're taking the Grand to the Mediterranean on May 16th. I don't know if tendering is going to be as much of a problem as it has been in the Caribbean.

My nose and I thank you for the update.

Smelling a lovely rose may be a bit problematic through the smell of sewerage or cigarette smoke :)

We were on the Grand 2/11 - 2/18 and attended five events, including muster, in the Princess Theater and only once was there an "aroma". I attributed it to one of our "friendly" neighbors!!

Maybe you have something there.. Lots of people sitting in a confined area after a large meal could generate a large cloud... :D:D:D

I don't intend to imply that the the person who started this thread didnt smell any sewerage, the point I was trying to make is that after reading so many threads and with all the cruises some people have taken, they still return to cruise but then they complain about anything and everything.......Sewerage odor that leads to cigarette odor. I only took 3 cruises so far, there was a slight sewerage odor on one ship in one area. By the theaters there is no smoking allowed and I never smelled anything except maybe perfume, body odor:eek: or alcohol.

We were on the Grand 1/28-2/4 and yes, there is a sewer smell on the right side of the theater. 1st night wasn't so bad, but by the 4th night, we had to move to the other side.
The smell was not there at all. Also, on the outside deck as you pass by the theater, you can smell it there also. Must be eminating from the restroom there. It was really, really bad by the 4th night. All in all, a good cruise, though. We loved the large balcony on the Caribe deck.

We noticed the sewage smell too at the theatre, I believe on the evening of 2/23.

We also noticed that smell outside our balcony (E723) on two nights, but they weren't consecutive.

The rest of the cruise was outstanding though. I would KILL for that pan-roasted pheasant again. yum . . .

Or could be a diaper left under a Princess Theater seat from the prior weeks cruise. :D

I know some of you love to be Princess cheerleaders, but please admit that, although you may not have notices, there is a problem with this odor. It is not constant, but it is real, and is not from people. I will say that I have noticed this on other ships, so I can't say this is just a Princess thing.
AS I previously mentioned, the cigarette smoking is something you have to live with on ships, and being from NY, where cigarette smoke is banned almost everywhere, I am really not used to it any more.

This was discussed not to long ago in regards to the venting of sewage smells on the Promanade deck outside the Club Fusion area. The smell has to escape somewhere.
I dont worry about it and I sure don't let it interupt my cruise.

Try Oceania, which significantly, SIGNIFICANTLY limits smoking and smoking areas. Personally while I detest the smell of smoke and smokers, I was not particularly bothered on my last Princess Cruise so long as I avoided the Casino and relevant bar areas; didn't notice a passenger sewage smell, so I guess I was lucky there.

I was on the Grand last week and yes, there was a sewage/sulfur smell, primarily on the Promenade deck (outside). I can't say about the Princess Theater as I didn't go to the shows there (not my thing). Was it unpleasent? Yes. Was it enought to disrupt my cruise? No. I simply moved down the walkway until it went away.

Okay...until I read these posts, I hadn't even thought about smoking policies on the Grand Princess.

What are the policies? I am a non-smoker and can't handle cigarette smoke, gives me horrible headaches. Is the smoke bad?

Any help would be appreciated.

Only in designated areas in certain lounges and supposed to be only one side of the Promanade deck outside probably where the ashtrays are but that does not stop most from lighting up wherever. The casino would probably be one of the worst places followed closely behind by Skywalkers.

A few weeks ago I submitted a thread on this very subject and 99 percent of the respondants said they have never smelled anything on the Grand. Interesting how in two weeks the Grand turned into a sewage smelling tub of....:D

I remember that and like I keep saying this is like a small city and the smell has to vent somewhere. :)

One might assume that if the ship is underway, then any odiferousness would just disappear with the wind when one is on one of the outside decks.

In the theaters, there is plenty of air movement due to the fans that circulate the heated and/or cooled air. I find it very hard to believe that a smell would be in one spot day after day, or evening after evening unless the source of that smell were to be immediately adjacent to the smellee. Did that make sense?

I was on the infamous (the Incident) Feb 4th sailing of the Grand. The night we sat on the right side of the theatre, three of us noticed a STRONG odor of sewage. I walked about 3 miles a day on the promenade, but I never noticed the odor any other time.

Oh, that's it. I figured it out.

Everyone could blame the sewage smell on the "Big List." Could that possibly be what people mean when they say, "You are on my SH*T LIST"???

I'm just kiddin'. :D :D Feeling silly today.

We were on the Grand Rome to Galveston over this past Thanksgiving and noticed a fairly continual strong sewage smell outside our cabin (D233).

Another couple I met in the laundry who had a cabin two down from ours noticed the same smell.

A post in another thread attributed this to high sulphur diesel fuel, not sewage. This might depend on where the ship fuels up.

This smell was quite annoying, but due to the weather we did not spend that much time on the balcony, though it did keep us from opening the sliding door for fresh air as much as we would have wanted. Had the weather been calmer and warmer the smell would have really affected our enjoyment of the cruise.

A sewer smell on a vessel should not be normal....you just don't usually hear people talk about sewage smells as part of the cruise. Although most of you say that it was not all that bothersome, it needs to be fixed. As I said before, acceptance of the unacceptable just breeds more.

In the two years I have been reading posts on CC, I have read this complaint about almost every ship on Princess, and RCI, at one point in time. It seems to be something that comes and goes on almost every ship. Guess we have to live with it. Karen

We were on the grand princess 2-11 through 2-18
The sewage smell was bad many times in differant areas, once out on the balcony aloha deck, others mentioned this as well ,
Yes the princess theater on the right side was so bad in the back area , you smeltedit as you entered , we wanted to leave it was bad , I finially went outside and waited for the show to end , This ended up being a good thing as the belly dancer instructor was out there as well and gave me a few personal lessons :) ;
We did not go back to that theater , The sewer smell was all week in differant areas of the ship , this I feel is a real big problem ,more than just venting , there is a BIG problem that needs to be fixed , Nobody wants to breath in those fumes:eek: as hard as it was to find a rest room on the ship when you finially did it was not good to enter when the fumes were so bad , and may I say theres were fumes coming out of the vent holes on the floor ,people were covering there faces in order to use the facilities,
I have not noticed this on any other cruise I have been on , or heard my friends mention this problem on ships they were on ,
We will not cruise Grand princess again ,

I have a big problem with second hand smoke as well. We were on the Jan 21 cruise and the only place I was bothered by smoke was the casino, where it is difficult at times to get away from the smokers.

I was on the Grand last fall Rome to Venice and never noticed any sewage smells. Also, I am very sensitive to cigarette smoke and expected to be exposed to much more, being in Europe. There really was very few places on the ship where people could smoke, and I didn't smell it often. Even the casino seemed to be better ventilated than most casinos on land I've been in.

I hope it's not bad now- if so they need to correct this! Why go to the theatre if it smells like sewage?

On Dawn Princess, we were on the last Caribbean cruise in October 2004 before it went into drydock. The smell in the Theatre was well known because of seepage under the carpet. I could not enter the Theatre because of the smell but had to go in once because the Customs Clearance was held there! But the smell did not affect many of the other pax. But hey! The price was right so it did not interfere with my enjoyment. /Sultan

From past reports on Saturday the 4th of feb, the ship did a sudden turn and nearly tipped , we talked to a couple who were still on the ship the next week when we were there , they said it was an aweful thing and very scarry , I'm thinking this may have caused the sewer smell , They were pulling up carpet in the wee hours of the morning , I saw this as i wanted a wee morning snack one day , and saw them put new carpet in the buffet area ,
I guess no matter what your trip cost , you should not have to go through sitting in a theater and smelling that , The theater should have been closed , they had no problem changing ports , they should be able to close a theater with a bad sewer smell , the back area were it was the worst for the most part ,or walking around and all of a sudden breathing that in , at times it was very strong , you had to hold your breath or hold something over your face to not inhale , at one time we were not able to sit out on the balcony because once the smell was bad there also , others smelt it as well ,,
the only place i ever came across cigerate smoke was in the skywalker dance area , but i think it was ventelated pretty good for smoke anyhow , but you still could smell it ,

We were on the 1/28/06 sailing of the Grand. We were in the "standing room only" section at the back of the theatre for all shows and noticed the sewage smell all week. Did not notice the odor anywhere else on the ship.
