Walkie Talkie Advice

We've used walkie talkies aboard ship before - we have the ones that go 1-2 miles (I think). They don't work very well. Does anyone have experience using the new ones with the 5 mile range? Do they work better than the older ones? Thanks for your help!

We used the Motorola Talkabouts on the Wonder in April. They worked most of the time. There were two instances where my wife and I were many decks apart and the signal was poor going through all the metal bulkheads. They work great on open land, such as at Castaway Cay.
