My wife's doctor says she can no longer travel. She wants me to go occasionally however since she knows I love to travel.
I called Oceania to cancel her reservation and ask the charge for a single. They told me it was 100%. They said if there are two beds in a cabin, they need to charge for both even if only one is occupied. Since I don't want a stranger for a cabin mate and my kids still work and can't get off work for long periods of time ( I don't like flying so I take longer cruises when I do fly).
Are there any cruise lines that offer a 25% single supplement like the land tour operators do?

you can find promos for special rates sometimes, but the ones that always charge 25% on the lower category rooms are Carnival and Crystal

Artie, why not have your TA call Oceania and see, if it is not a full sailing sometime they will negotiate with an agent..(another reason to use and agent)

There is an organization called O Solo Mio Singles Travel. You might want to give it a look.

Hi Artie - sorry to hear about the missus - I don't know how much I'd enjoy travelling if my wife couldn't accompany me. I'd probably arrange trips based on what she can handle - maybe weekend trips, or less strenuous river or coastal cruises along the Mississippi or the Chesapeake. Or a drive to San Diego, where you might happen to come across a cruise to Mexico! :)

Most of the ships do have medical facilities, but travel insurance might be hard to obtain if she has a pre-existing condition and something more seriously develops.

I think Oceania offers discounted single supplements on their trans-Atlantic sailings if you don't mind the unchanging views.

You might check to see whether you would receive an air credit if you were to book a 2 for 1. That credit would reduce the fare somewhat.

I just booked my mother as a single on Insignia (Venice to Lisbon). She will be traveling with my wife and me (but in her own cabin) since most of her friends can't handle a trip that long any more. She is getting a $540 credit off the single supplement since Oceania only has to pay for one "free" airfare. It's still quite expensive to travel as a single (almost double) BUT every little bit helps.:)

as a solo three times, and the rates are reasonable. On one cruise(in 2004) I paid the same as double occupancy rate, and the other two ranged 120-140%. HAL is very solo friendly and I highly recommend them. My most current solo cruise was on HAL last month. I am very happily married but my dh's vacation times is very limited so sometimes I go on my own.

I checked and you are correct on this!

I just got this quote for a single Cat G (normally $999pp)
But considering this is a "free air" promo....does that mean the air is valued at $300?? seems low

Ship: Regatta
Sailing date: November 15, 2006 from Lisbon to Miami.
Stateroom category: G - Inside
Cruise fare: $ 1,700.00
Port Fee: $ 149.00
Airfare from PHL: $ Free
Transfers: $ 91.00
Port Tax: $ 190.00
Air Tax and Ticketing fee: $ 239.00
Total price for one (1) guest: $ 2369.00 ***

wow, airfare starts are $1000ish per person, so this is definitely a deal.

FWIW, I got a quote with no air, for a single:
Cruise Fare: $ 1549.00
Port Fee: $ 149.00
Port Tax: $ 190.00
Total: $ 1888.00

So I'm booking. It's cheaper than Carnival. How can I resist? :D

oh, absolutely! I'm so over Carnival, and mas market lines in general. I guess I've become a snob and now I want to try all the luxe lines. I like Radisson (Regent) so I figure I'll like Oceania. This seems like a great way to try them. I was always hesitant because of the 200% single supplement.
