View Full Version : Has anyone stayed in cabins with portholes at front of Zaandam?

I just got our cabin assignment (outside guarantee) and was somewhat dismayed to see that we have portholes not a picture window (H1806 on Dolphin deck). I didn't realize that there were outside cabins with portholes.
This cabin is also a bit smaller than standard outside (due to location) and has a shower not a tub (that part didn't bother me as much).
Has anyone stayed in this type of cabin?

Hi
I've stayed in that type of cabin a few times.
Twice on the Statendam - cabin 507, and once
on the Veendam -cabin 515.
There really is no diff, only the size.
And 2 portholes, which emit plenty of light. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
And if you look on the deck plan, you'll notice 2 'white dots' on the black border of those cabins. Those specify portholes.
Enjoy your voyage!

We had one on the Veendam, cabin H501... our cabin was actually a bit larger than the others in the same catagory, it was configured for handicapped pax. We have found the handicapped cabins to be a bit larger allowing for wheelchair access.
We did not miss the window. It is above the bed anyway, we have to get up on the bed and lean onto the ledge in order to look outside. The portholes provided plenty of light.

I forgot to mention that.
Have to say, my knees hurt after a while climbing up that ledge to look at the water.

Vic-
I hear you http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
The kids always do it - if the bed is not made up yet, I get mad at them - trampling on our pillows.
Looking out the window can hardly be worth the effort.
Last cruise, passing Cape Hatteras, we got so much salt water splash, we couldn't see out anyway (it did get washed in St. Thomas).

Good thing those portholes didn't open.....
I'd still be stuck in that cabin. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

On our repo cruise on the Zaandam last month, one of the portholes crashed in during a hurricane strength storm..in the middle of the night no less. Check to make sure yours is tight!!!....jean

I'm surprised the deadlights weren't shut.
Unless it was one of those things that just blew out of nowhere.
Vanc, just bring a wetsuit, you'll be fine.

Being from Vancouver, I wear a wetsuit at most times, so I am sure I will be fine.

YIKES, Jean! What a way to be awakened! "Hey, Margo, there's a fish in this bed!!!"
That kinda puts a lot of the complaints we hear into perspective. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

When the pax were awakened, they tried to exit the cabin, but the loss of the porthole had caused a vacuum in the cabin and they couldn`t get the door open. The front desk was called and in 5 minutes had them out of there.
This all happened in the Gulf of Tehuantepec on the way to Huatulco, which is known for strong local winds and storms. The Captain at noon time had said the weather was going to be fair...he decided not to do any more forecasting on that trip!! We also lost 15 deck chairs and several tables from the aft pool area....Watch out for it Greg on your sailing!!....jean

Vic,
Can't always believe the drawings.....on the Zaandam plan, it shows 4 portholes on the deckplan for H 1804 and H1805. Looking at some of my old exterior pics, there are only two on those cabins.
Anybody ever see the inside of these ?

Got photos from Access and Compliance and they confirm only 2 portholes in 1804/1805.
I like the unusual layout of the room....very different form the standard rectangle. More square and some interesting jogs along the hull.
Still wouldn't mind being upgraded to a window, so I will ask when we board.

We stayed in G2508 on Zaandam's Main Deck. We were suddenly awakened by the loud roar from the anchor chain, as we prepared to dock in Freeport early in the morning. At least we knew what to expect the following morning in Nassau!
Other than that, the cabin was fine.
