Finally have the time to write a little about our wonderful FIRST cruise. This may take multiple entrys. Overall everything exceeded our expectations with only 2 snafus which I will briefly talk about later. Background - we are in late 40s, mid 50s and this was our first cruise - and we took DW's father. We were in 7132, aft corner on the Rotterdam deck. DFIL was in an inside cabin.

Embarkation - almost flawless; arrived a little after 11:00, dropped the luggage and parked across the street. Took a bicycle rickshaw back to the terminal (my own little $5 treat to start vacation). Since we were deluxe verandah suite we had priority - but we weren't in the computer! Remembering the tragic circumstances of one person I read on the CC board I instantly broke into a cold sweat. But, after about 10 minutes and a call to Seattle everything was fine. Everyone was very cordial and reassuring despite my pacing and biting of fingernails. By 11:30 we were on board. Dropped our luggage in the Neptune and off to explore the ship and eat lunch at the Lido.

Cabin - Fantastic; of course the room was a little smaller than the other deluxe verandahs but the verandah seemed the size of a football field. Since we spent a lot of time outside it was great. Really liked the side section for views. Yes, people can look down on you but the side offers privacy. Verandah furniture was super. No problems at all with the cabin and i loved the extras - especially the binoculars! Our cabin steward, Celo, was the best - remembered our names and took very good care of us. There is no room on the desk because of the TV, which will change after the upgrades coming in October. I liked it because I couldn't take my computer out so no early morning work! The verandah will be somewhat smaller after drydock in October since they will be adding a few cabins.

Dining - We ate in the Vista 4 nights and Pinnacle 3 nights. Loved them both. I especially loved the cold fruit soups in the Vista and the steaks in the Pinnacle. We had a table for 2 and we were quite happy with it. Our waiter - Andreas - was great. The timing of everything was perfect and the food could not have been better. Lobster night was great, especially if you got the surf and turf. Two nights the service in the Pinnacle was superb with the waiters keeping us in stitches. The 3rd night was a bit tense, I think our waiter was just tired and he could not speak English very well. the fact that I could get both the chocolate volcano AND the creme brulee made the whole trip worthwhile. We ate 3 breakfasts in the Vista which was very nice and not crowded. The Lido breakfasts were good as well, especially the eggs benedict; although it was a bit crowded, not with lines, just not a lot of tables free. We ordered room service coffee every morning for 7:00 and it was delivered right at 7:00 each day.

Spa - on the plus side, we signed up for the thermal suite and used it every day. Very much worth the added money. The heated ceramic lounge chairs overlooking the ocean bring instant naptime. Neither the chairs or the hydropool were ever crowded. On the negative side, although the massages were very good they need to stop pushing products. This was very disappointing and could certainly lead to trouble for people who "can't say no." I managed to get out with a $55 bottle of stuff for my sore muscles, but it could have been a LOT worse.

Cabo - Beautiful place. Took a water taxi to the rocks and just relaxed on the boat. Walked around the town a bit but nothing too strenuous.

Mazatlan - walked the beach and went to the shopping area. At one point I counted 7 tour buses in the shopping area from the Oosterdam.

Puerto Vallerto - Did the Los Veranos canopy tour and it was great. I have a touch of vertigo but it did not bother me at all. I could have done it all day. But, it is a bit of a ride on their truck from their office - fine going there, great views, etc. but on the way back you are tired, thirsty and ready to get back to the ship. Would have loved more time in PV.

On the second sea day Mr. Deering met with the Cruise Critics - he spent over an hour just talking with us and answering questions. Great guy. As an aside, to tell you how "customer focused" he is, we went to the front desk on the last sea day and there was a line (maybe 7,8 people). He went to the back of the line and started asking people if he could help them. We saw him everywhere and he was always top notch.

We renewed our vows, along with 4 other couples. Captain Mercer was great - funny, yet kept the atmosphere appropriate. I would recommend this for everyone!

Bar service was always great, but surprisingly there was never a crowd; often we were the only ones in a bar having a nightcap.

There were a number of kids on this trip (172, I think), probably due to spring break. All but a couple were very well mannered. Average age was probably mid-50s.

The entertainment was so-so - I can't remember the two shows we went to - one was a juggler which was OK. The last night was John Davidson, which we saw part of and it was really good. I'm not a big fan of his but he really put his heart into it.

Bottom line - Great first cruise and we are hooked! Can't wait till the next one - maybe we can practice our juggling and get a job on HAL. Everyone on the crew was fantastic - superb service with a smile.

One final note (with a big thank you to shore services) - since we drove we immediately left San Diego and headed to Vegas (our halfway point). When I went to unload the car I found that we had left one suitcase (of the many) in the terminal in SD. Yikes! Finally found the right person who had it right next to her (she had already called our home and left a msg). They shipped it out Monday and we recieved today (Friday) and even though we gave them a CC number - still no charge has shown up.

We are sold on HAL, Mr. Deering, and Captain Mercer (and the Los Veranos canopy tour). :) :) :)

Thanks for taking the time to post your review, I enjoyed reading about your first cruise experience.
We will be taking our third HAL cruise in December on the Volendam and know our experience will be equally as enjoyable.

Glad you had a good time. We sail next Saturday on the same cruise. Your review has whetted my appetite even more than it already was, although we will NOT be doing the zip line or anything that involves heights.

So, when are you booking your next cruise?

We're sailing on 4/15/06 on the Oosterdam - thanks for the reveiw! We're also doing the Los Veranos zipline tour. I'm somewhat afraid of heights, but from everything I've read even those with height fears think it is awesome. So, I'm giving it a try!

Well, that's a nice surprise. I've read similar complaints that the tv on the desk took up too much space, but this is the first time I've read that this will be changed in Oct.

Glad all of you had such a nice time on your cruise :)

Could someone fill me in on what's happening to the aft cabins/verandahs on the Oosterdam in October? How much of the space will be gone? What exactly is being done? We're booked in November in and aft suite, and no mention has been made tht we're getting a smaller verandah...

Anyone have the new layout?

thanks

January cannot get here fast enough!!! Thank you for taking the time to write a review. Our first and only cruise was with Carnival during spring break. My husband made me take a vow to never do that again!!! I think the kids ratio was 50/50! Many Paris Hilton wanna-be's on board on that one along with 21 year olds that thought drinking was a sport. We are looking forward to a more adult group in January.

To answer some of your questions...the verandahs on the aft suites will be smaller after October because they are adding a cabin on both sides; not sure how it will affect the middle ones. But, they are so large now I'm not sure it will matter. They will also upgrade all suites to plasma TVs in October, so you can use the desk

Re: Los Veranos Canopy Tour - I, too, was concerned about being scared of heights - no problem. You are securely strapped into your harness. The first zip is low and slow and takes care of any fears you have. When you first arrive you can see some zip lines 400' above you...don't let that bother you - they come at the end and you will be ready for more and higher. The guys who are at every station are a real hoot!

Thank you for your review, we'll be on the O in December, and we can't wait to see the final upgrades as we sailed her back in 2004.

I too was on the 3-25 cruise. I was with my brother-in-law and 4 other couples ranging in age from 55+. I have previously taken 2 Princess cruises, which cannot compare with HAL. Every crew member was friendly and helpful, great service and good food.

The only disappointment we had were the shows, we walked out of all of them. Some of us were used to more extravagana type entertainment, versus a juggler etc.. John Davidson was fun to look at for about 10 minutes.

There are many activities for teens on the ship, as well as a room just for them to hang out, they were all over, having a great time, and all well behaved. There were a couple of small children that should have been left home.

Plane reservations were not good, HAL didn't make them until the last month and we had to change planes both ways. Our travel agent had confirmed a one way flight was possible when we booked. When we checked in at 4am, we were told our reservation was for the day before...... panic to say the least, the airline prompty straightened it out.
Sacramento to LAX to San Diego. The return trip was interesting....
San Diego to Salt Lake City to Sacramento.

Long, long day of travel that wasn't necessary. Make your own reservations, or make sure HAL books in a timely fashion, they kept telling us it was too early to book. It was done too late for us to change anything.

We all had a great time, I'm considering Alaska on HAL now.

We just got off the Oosterdam this morning. 1st group was called at 8:15 and were off the ship with luggage in tow by 8:30. They had promised to have everyone off by no later than 10 am. :)

We were off by 8:30 and in the car on the road by 8:45.

You fill out a form early in the cruise to tell them what your flight times are. That way they ensure that you are in the right group to disembark with enough time to make your flight. Be sure to fill out this form and turn it in.

No suite for us, I guess we'll enjoy watching the tv that's on the desk :D

Our family was on this cruise also. I was going to post a review, but Benchmarklearning did such a good job, I really can't add much.
Our DS is 17 and unfortunatly was a little bored. We blamed it on the fact that he was at an in between age. He really didn't meet anyone his age at the teen center, but was just a little young to go to the casino. He enjoyed himself just hanging out, but on previous cruises he really kept busy. Our DD however is 13, and I think 80% of the other teens were as well. She had the time of her life.
I would agree with Tazj, that the shows weren't all that great.
I love HAL and just being on the ship is wonderful for me. We did cruise on the Celebrity Infinity last year and I have to admit they gave HAL a run for thier money, we all thought the food on Celebrity was better, I also liked the fact that on Celebrity I didn't have to pay $150 to use the hydropool.
In Mazatlan we booked a private tour with Mazatlan Frank. He was wonderful I would recommend him to everyone. We did the swim with wild dolphins in PV, and never seen or heard the word dolphin on the trip. Fun snorkeling, but not what we had expected. (our only experience was in Hawaii).
I have a chance to do this same cruise in October, and you can bet if it works out I will be there.

San Diego to Salt Lake City to Sacramento.

That sounds crazy. LAX to San Diego? and all the way to Salt Lake City (not a bad place I am sure).

This is a reminder to myself and DW why we schedule flights on our own and get to the port city two days early. And no stop overs enless we are talking a price savings that will knock our socks off.

I am glad you had a great time. Alaska is a must do and for me I look forward to a redo. Hope you go soon.
