Does Hal do any poolside activities? I have never read if they did this kind of things. Bellie flop, hairy leg contest etc..... Do they do any newleywed game or talent contests?

Yes! They do, Iwas on a relay team of 4 and my leg of the race was to "swim a lap" and then eat a cracker then whistle. Oh, it was 2 crackers and the team mates would feed you the crackers. I bite one if the girls fingers while she feed me the cracker. While trying to whistle I spewed cracker crumbs on the CD(MC).

HAL frequently has the "not so newlywed game"
They also have the ship building teams which is not really an in-the-pool activity but fun.
The polar bear swim is done when crossing the arctic circle and the poseidon thing when crossing the equator for which certificates are given.

On our recent Caribbean cruise there were a few more "refined" pool games like golf chipping contests and relay contests ( like passing a grapefruit from teammate to teammate without using one's hands). The ship building contest is a staple on every cruise.

The only pool game I think I've ever seen is the golf chipping contest. And there is live music only maybe an hour a day around lunchtime at the pool. I've never see the relay team game that I remember and we are usually in the pool area on sea days, so maybe it is just on some ships, maybe the Vistas. The pool area is much quieter than other cruiselines and if you are looking for a lot of organized activity there HAL is not the cruiseline for you.
There is an occasional Not So Newlywed Game, but we've never been able to go as it is usually at 8 pm dinner hour. I think some of the ships have a Passenger Talent Contest.

On our recent Westerdam cruise 03/26, on sea days they had pool games by the Lido pool they had golf chipping, and by the AFT pool they had the more raunchy games and as well as the cracker eating competition they had who could produce the biggest water bomb:eek: quite funny from a distance.

There were pool games on the Noordam recently.

And answering the above post re: oranges .... use your neck and chin muscles. ;)

Amsterdam
We had pool games - golf chipping and relay races and belly flops - all held at the middle pool.
Live music everyday from 11:45 - 12:45 - rarely any Hawaiian music.

best response I've heard to this question was last time around when I think it was Heather? said that occasionally someone throws a walker into the pool and others sit around pointing their canes and shouting out "I saw that!!"
Still makes me laugh, although seems like others took umbrage.. strikes me that the solution to that is to throw THEM in the pool as well

It sounds to me as though HAL is "changing with the times" to attract new cruisers. Between pool games, not strictly enforcing dress suggestions and reasonable prices, it seems as though they're on the right track.
Can't wait until 12/3!:)

I'm not sure how you know that when you haven't been on your first HAL cruise yet. Why book a cruiseline and then hope it will be changing to suit your preferences?

I believe that in a business sense, they're on the right track, Peaches.
According to the many posts I've read, they're changing, much to the dismay of the "old timers".
As for me, I have no problem with dressing for dinner, although I like the option of eating casually in my stateroom. I don't participate in pool activities. The price and itinerary is what hooked me.
You're assuming that I want the cruiseline to change. You're sadly mistaken. You know what they say about assuming, Peaches.

There was a pool volleyball game on our Zuiderdam cruise, ship staff vs guests - the staff told me they never "win" though... ;)

Right track ? Wouldn't it be easier just to remove Holland America from the ship and repaint it with "Carnival" ?

Agreed. But, I think that they're going for volume and new passengers. It honestly doesn't matter to me.

That is of course Vic, unless one has more chins than a Chinese telehone book in which case it becomes real interesting!;)

LOL agree with you, Grumpy...I was questioning Eldercruser's comment about "refined pool games"...think a grapefruit was mentioned..impossible to pass an object like that and stay refined !! :):)

I believe it is HAL'S intent to have the cruise staff provide entertainment for the "pool crowd", particularly the aft pool.
Most of the cruise staff knows the reluctance of the "somewhat mature" HAL crowd to join in, and as a result give up trying. Some however haven't, and on a nice sunny sea day , can attract a good crowd!

This thread reminds me of an episode of The Golden Girls :)
They are trying to talk Sophia (the mother) into going on a crusie. They are reading the brouchure with all the attractions and activities on deck.
She says she was on on ecruise before and that was enough . 1924 when she came to this country from Sicily *LOL*
"Picture it, a creeky old boat full of the huddled masses yearning to be free, People are scared , seasick, homesick for the old country. No Music, no entertainment, just sitting there on deck looking at the ocean. If someone hadn't started a game of "pin the tail on the French" we all would have went stir crazy" *LOL*
