View Full Version : Chances of upgrade after room assignment

Hi all! Just wondering--my next cruise is not until the end of November. I went on and filled out the immigration form and my "guarantee" room has already been assigned. What are the chances of HAL changing it prior to the cruise? Is it now set in stone?
Also, I read on some other posts that sometimes the upgrades just switch location but kept the same category. It sounded like the midship locations were the most desirable. Is that the case and if so, why? Ours is assigned to right smack dab in the middle of the ship and I'm wondering if we'll be able to feel any motion, which I love! We're on the Maasdam.
I'm not going to print my express boarding pass until the last minute, just in case. I figured if I print the pass then the room will be definite. Although if it'll be definite anyway it'll be fun to print the pass now!
THANKS SO MUCH!!!

If anybody here absolutely knows the answer to this question then I want them as my stock broker. :) The mysteries of the "upgrade fairy" are truly wondrous and without rational or consistent pattern. You could very well stay right in the cabin you're assigned now or be changed the day you get to the terminal and potentially every variations in between those two extremes.

I agree with you Randyk47. We booked a SZ guarantee and was upgraded to SY within a week of our booking (checked our immigration form). Our cabin stayed the same even to the day before our departure. When we checked in, we found that we had been upgraded again to SA. So cruisecache&squash, you just never know, that's the gamble of guarantees. Hopefully, you'll end up with a wonderful location.

Thanks. I guess I'll wait to print my boarding pass, just in case.

Ah, go ahead and print your pass so you can gaze on it in amazement! If the number ends up being wrong, it won't matter.

We took it upon ourselves to ask the upgrade fairy.
We had picked (and paid the fare on) an HH obstructed on the Volendam. When we were on the Volendam before, we had the DD right next to it, so we knew what to expect. But I kept my eye on the C unobstructed that was 2 doors down. It did not get filled. When it came time for them to start final upgrades (at least in my mind) three weeks before we sailed, I called the TA and specified which cabin I'd like to change to if they would be kind enough to upgrade me to it. He made no promises, and faxed the request to them. When I checked my immigration form 2 days later, we had been changed to that cabin.
I was very grateful to HAL for doing this for me. I guess it goes to show that it never hurts to ask.

We didn't find out about our upgrade until we got to the pier. I was worried that our luggage would get lost but they told us everything is changed when they upgrade. We were supposed to be on the Main deck inside and they upgraded us to a outside cabin on the Upper Promenade deck which was right in the middle of the ship and we really didn't feel much motion at all..
