Noise canceling earphones for long flights

In preparing for our cruise I would like to buy some noise canceling earphones for the long plane ride. Does anyone have any suggestions other than the Bose product?

I'm anxiously awaiting our papers. Getting near the 30 day mark.

There are several varieties of hearing suppressors available from the shooting sports stores.
I have never used them on a flight,but they do a good job of cancelling out noise on the shooting range.
Think maybe I`ll try it next time.
Bonus---- I you are ever hijacked,you won`t hear the shots.

I have another suggestion.

The noise suppression foam things that you actually stick in your ears work really well and might be more comfortable in the long run.
My husband thinks they feel funny in his ears but I find they help a lot (if someone next to you is snoring for example).

I have been considering the same products myself and know the difference beteween noise cancelling headphones and bits of foam to stick in your ears.

Having read many discussions on this subject on other message boards, the consensus seems to be that the Bose QuietComfort headphones are the best overall performers. The downsides are that they are expensive, they are bulky to carry although the new model (QuietComfort 2) is significantly better than the original model, and because they are big on the ears you can't always sleep comfortably with them on because they'll press against something when your head falls to one side, and much of the noise reduction effect is lost.

I have a pair of the original Bose headphones which are brilliant when I use them. But for most of my long flights, sleep is more important than headphones, so I take foam earplugs for that instead.

I 'think' it was Consumer Reports that had a review/test of this type of headphones. Some of the more compact/less $$ models did quite nicely.

Try looking at the back issues at your local library if it isn't in the current issue.

I agree with Vegas Jim, the eyemask is a must in my opinion.

We always have long flights to Europe of over 25-30 hours and the mask is invaluable. At least I can sleep with that on my eyes as we always have a couple of night flights both going and returning. The noise and drone of the plane doesn't seem to worry me at all. I also take a quarter of a sleeping tablet to help me along.
