My husband and I are booked on a late may cruise on the Maasdam from Montreal to Boston. We usually like to book excursions on our own rather than from the ship. Often in ports we have rented a car (for example, driving into the Yukon in Alaska) and really like that freedom. I'd appreciate any suggestions about excursions or best ports to book a car. Thanks in advance.

Check Cruise Critics Ports of Call message boards. Those are frequently more about independent or on-your-own excursions.
We do ship shore excursions, but understand you don't want those. Several of the ports have lots of interest within walking distance in addition to further away points of interest. Those include Halifax and Quebec City. Bar Harbor is a tender port, but I notice that unlike our 4/28 cruise you will have a full day there. I see that you'll have less than a full day on Prince Edward Island so might not want to rent a car there. However, our family drove clear around the island when I was a teenager and it's one of my top memories from those family trips. Don't think you have enough time, but it is one of the few ports where I've wished I had a car.
