Visit the NCL board and try to get a definition of NCL's "Service Fee" and/or "Resort Fee". Sometimes it's a tip, and sometimes it ain't. Talk about your Texas "sidestep".
Now that is a real management fiasco!
While you're there, don't miss the postings about Pride Of Aloha. There's more agonizing going on than in Mel Gibson's "Passion".

Sure wish HAL would define exactly what they mean.

On our cruise on the Maasdam in May we had the new policy and left the tips on. We also tipped our concierge and others extra. Now we read on these boards that the crew we gave the extra tips to had to turn over that money to go into the pool. Otherwise they could be fired.

We wanted to tip our waiter, assistant and room steward above the tips added to our bill. We called our room steward into our room and told him that this was an additional tip and not to share it with anyone or tell anyone. Believe me he understood quite well. In the restaurant our husband's shook the hands of our waiter and assistant ( with money in hand) and basically
told them the same thing. The new policy probably assures that all workers get tips for service, and do not get stiffed, but I do assume that the workers who go beyond the call of duty do get other tips on the side.

KK, I thought it was just the opposite ... if you leave the auto-tip in place, the recipient can keep whatever extra you give. They may have to temporarily turn it in until their supervisor confirms that you left your tip in place, but they get it back.

Yes, it would be nice if HAL would just cut to the chase and tell us exactly how the $10 is split out and what happens if you do/don't leave your auto-tip in place.

I Just went and looked at the NCL board http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif.. BTW ..If you go over to the NCL board to see, check out the raging battle with their new American Flagged ships and the All American crews (not very hard working apparently ?).. Those threads make, HAL's old tipping treads look like "Sunday School Discussions" by comparisons .. Wow!
Now it's for sure.. I wouldn't sail again on an NCL ship if you gave me the cruise free. (seriously !) Just don't need the grief.

We also shook hands with the various people we passed extra monies to. Always did that in the past as well. The only person whom we saw set the money aside and not quickly hide it was our concierge - she just put it in a pile with everyone elses. Quess she split it with the others working the front desk.
