Hi all!

How much can you feel the movement on the Maasdam? I just found out my cabin has been assigned already and it's right in the middle of the main deck. A lot of people would like to be in the most stable part of the ship but I really like the movement. The more motion, the better!! Anyone have any experience with a midship cabin that you can enlighten me with? Thanks so much!!

Generally speaking, midships is the most stable, reference movement.

We did a trans-Atlantic on Maasdam, way back in 11-95, and were in Main Deck #512(?) (forward). West of the Azores, it got pretty rough, and we did feel a lot of movement.

Water entered the hull via the hawsepipe (anchor chainway), and some dozen or so cabins, including ours, flooded to a depth of about 6inches. Luckily, there were empty cabins to which we could be moved. We ended up in Main #641, which was more stable.

Maasdam and her sisters have a fairly flat bottom and blunt prow, and in my opinion are not particularly "good sea boats" in heavy heaving seas.

Travel can be an adventure.

Hi,
If you're leaving from Norfolk, chances are in November there will be some rough seas on the way south, especially from the Virginia capes to Florida.

We were on Maasdam last summer on the NE/Canada trip and it was as calm as could be. AMOF, I chuckled when one lady in the show lounge at about 10:30 pm, tapped me on the shoulder and asked if the ship was in trouble as she heard engine rumbling and felt motion. I told her the ship was just picking up speed and if this was the most she could endure, not to take a transatlantic crossing.

November aboard any ship can be difficult to predict. But never fear, you'll still be gently rocked to sleep every night.

I hope you like the Maasdam as much as we do. She's small, beautiful, and homey with a great crew and great food.
I hope we'll like the Westerdam as this will be our first trip on a Vista class; we're used to the S and R class ships.

I was on Maasdam 3/06 out of Norfolk, Main Deck Port Side about midship Cabin #790. We felt very little movement at all in our cabin. The seas were very calm on our trip,(3/3 - 3/14), the Captain mentioned that it was the smoothest sailing this year out of Norfolk. The last night before disembarkation on the bridge information channel they reported the seas to be 18' - 20' but I think that was not accurate, my wife and I slept all night. No severe movement any nights in our cabin.Friends of ours were in a suite on the Nav Deck and felt alot of movement everynight. We could feel the most movement in the ship at nights in the balcony of the Rembrandt Lounge(far forward), and also sometimes at dinner in the main dinning room upper level(far aft). These are both on the Upper Promenade Deck. The higher and more forward or aft, you should get all the movement you want.

If you're looking to feel "the motion of the ocean" mid-ship on Main Deck on the Maasdam, I fear you'll be disappointed.
I sailed the Maasdam round-trip trans-Atlantic on the northern route last summer; felt narry a thing. Now, that was a particularly smooth crossing, but still---it was the north Atlantic.

I enjoyed my time on the Maasdam. I had forgotten just how much I love those S-class ships.
I hope you enjoy her, too.

Small tip:;) How much motion/movement you will experience totally depends on the weather forecast and subsequent seas you will encounter!

We have been on the Maasdam twice. Last year we did Transatlantic on her and even though we only had one 24 hour period of Force 8 gales, you could feel the movement. Our cabin was midships on Main Deck.

I would not have like to have been on her this year when we went down to Antarctica and we experienced 24 hours in a Force 11 gale as I felt the Maasdam moved a little too much. We were on the Regal Princess and she is a great sailor.

That's true, but assuming there will be some motion I didn't know how much less it would be being in the middle vs. having a cabin on one of the ends. Sounds like it would be good for my fiance, who can hurl just watching an IMAX movie! Oh well-it certainly isn't going to affect how much fun I have!

Dwdowns, that is weird about the accuracy of the sea channel. On my past Westerdam cruise I know I felt more movement at a force 5 than a force 8. Maybe the direction of the wind/waves?

Thanks, all, for posting your experiences! I really enjoy reading about them. Ruth, I'm looking forward to seeing your post-Easter chocolate sig!

Jennie, this reads so funny! We were on the Maasdam at the same time; you were in the (slightly) more stable area. I posted that I felt it a very smooth ride and you found a period where you could feel the movement.
Just goes to show---one more time---that people experience the same cruise very differently.
