Thanks Paul, I do have a question. Has any one officially given the cause of fire? Last I knew there were numerous stories. I have not had the time to read the Princess Board.

I just got shivers down my spine looking through them - it must have been terrifying for the passengers in the affected cabins. It would be bad enough being a passenger in other areas of the ship, but to have your cabin and belongings destroyed while on vacation is unimaginable! Thank you for sharing the link.

Smooth Sailing! :) :) :)

Looking at the damage, I am more convinced than ever that there's a lot more to the story of what started the fire than is being made public. Frankly I wonder if the "whole" story will ever come out........

Here are some pic's of the Star arriving in Germany for final repairs it first went to Freeport for Demoliation or Prep work.

The cause is still in the air but most says someone smoking on the balcony and possible left it unattend or did not makie sure it was disposed correctly.

Someone should save a few of those photos for the next time someone starts a thread about "I'll iron in my cabin if I want to"!!!

Very, very frightening indeed.

Thanks for sharing the pictures. We were on the Amsterdam when we heard about the fire and saw pictures on CNN.

How long is the ship going to be out service? There looks to be a lot of structural damage.

Feel so sorry for those passengers. Several of us were in the Neptune Lounge and many of us had tears in our eyes when we saw the pictures.

You are so right, I don't think the full story will ever come out either as happens with most ship board mysteries.

Stunning photos! I couldn't see all of them. I viewed some then the site wouldn't load anything else. Probably high demand right now.

So sad. I agree ... there's bound to be more to the story that we've heard thus far.

These photos are truly heart wrenching.

Princess is still giving a date of May15 for the Star's return, but I can't see how.

The UK's MAIB has changed the status of the Star inquiry from "Preliminary Investigation" to "Under Full Investigation" sometime over the past few days. They typically issue a report of the Preliminary Investigation but it is not on-line as of yet. You can keep a watch here: http://www.maib.gov.uk/publications/comlpleted_preliminary_examinations/completed_preliminary_examinations_2006.cfm

In the "Merchant Vessel" catagory for the Preliminary Report.

Having sailed on Star Princess, the pictures are particularly disturbing. I did not realize that the fire had reached, and damaged, the portside central Lido Deck pool area. If that deck had caught fire, the fire could have spread across the width of the ship. No fire doors in that area except for forward and aft of where the fire might have been.

The crew is to be highly commended for containing and extinguishing the fire. The low loss of life and number of injuries also speaks highly of the professionalism of the crew.

It could have been much worse, including the loss of the ship.

Those are amazing pics! I agree with rkacruiser, her crew does deserve a lot of credit for fighting that and preventing bigger loss of life! Had to be a hell that night! Didn't realize she was already in Germany for repairs. Thanks for sharing!

very, very sobering...and I want to echo racruiser's comments about the crew...seeing those cabins and verandahs upclose made me realize what a job the staff did containing that fire...and it's also rather unsettling that when you look at the burned area on the side of the ship, the black area is basically the shape of a ship...

Those pictures set me shivering. To think---any one of us could be faced with the same situation on any cruise.

Thank you for posting.

Being that it was a huge fire on a large cruise ship you can bet that there will be an inquiry by some maritime body. My gut tells me that being it's Princess, that the investigation would, at least in part, include the US Coast Guard and possibly ATF.
I know that there are much more knowledgeable CCer's who could speak more specifically to the inquiry process. Maritime inquiry findings into fires and accidents make for very interesting reading. The inquiry I would imagine will take awhile, but I do believe that we will learn more of the story when the results are announced.

One thing that puzzle's me, how come the sprinklers in each cabin didnt to there job??? I mean every cabin I have been in there is a sprinkler in the center of the ceiling. If the fire started in a cabin as has been speculated why didnt the sprinkler go off and douse the fire. Also a single sprinkler going off will set off an alarm on the fire control panel on the bridge. If so quick response by fire suppression teams should have kept this from getting out of hand.
Being a retired fireman I can tell you that a fire in a trash can will generate enough heat to set off the sprinkler in a room.
How do they get 100 cabins burning so quickly???
No there must be more to this story, I wonder if we will ever find out?

Thanks for sharing those disturbing photos. I will now always be on the alert for the smell of smoke when on a cruise. It has always been one of my worries that a fire could take hold and we could be caught up in it.

The crew of the Star certainly did a wonderful job. The safety of the passengers lives certainly depended on the job that the crew did to keep the fire to a minimum.

Regardless of the cause of the fire, and I do understand that concern, I'm very concerned about the amount of damage especially after seeing these pictures. Somehow I had it in my mind that cruise ships were built and outfitted with the very best fire resistant materials but the pictures, to this layman, speak to an incredibly hot and intense fire. Quite frankly I'm surprised they got it under control at all, an amazing job by the crew from the captain on down. I now understand why some fire investigators are saying determining the initial cause may be difficult to impossible.....really incredible pictures.
