View Full Version : Favourite Princess Captain?

Hi everyone!

I was just reading the thread about favourite Cruise Directors and thought about posting a topic about any favourite Princess Captain's you may have. Any thoughts?

My favourite is Attilio Guerrini (ex Dawn and Sea, now Sapphire Princess). He is an excellent Captain - although he struggled slightly with his English, everyone I've spoken to loves him, both passengers and crew. There is always such a lovely atmoshere onboard his ships and there's never any hint of arrogance or strutting around - he's always smiling and laughing and made many people's cruise by inviting them up onto the bridge wings to watch sunset departures from the beautiful caribbean ports we visited. He would always stop on the stairs for a chat and didn't mind if passengers ashore would stop and talk to him when he was having a break. He's also obviously very highly regarded by the company - relief captain for the inaugural season of the Sea Princess in 1998, in charge of the entire startup of the new Ocean Village cruise line and now in command of the new-build team working on the Sapphire Princess. A truly wonderful Captain - I wish him the best for his new command.

I second that! Attilio Guerrini was the captain on one of the last cruises of the old STAR PRINCESS. As I can recall, he was the only Italian captain that actively went out of his way to speak (in English) with passengers at the parties on board. Most of the other Italian captains that I have encountered seemed more reserved, or unsure of their English. Of the British captains, I'll give the nod here to Nick Carlton ... extremely personable. Of course, none of this has anything to do with managing the crew onboard, or running the ship. But I do believe that some of the attitude that a captain extends to the passengers is also reflected in his attitude towards his crew.

I agree with your selection of Capt Guerrini, but must mention a close runner-up in Capt Guiseppe Romano, who is also very personable, cares deeply about his crew as well as passengers. Capt Bernie Warner is another who demonstrates great leadership with his crew, and is very friendly with the guests.
These men demonstrate hospitality, which is really what Princess sells, now isn't it? Some captains never leave the bridge deck, not even to visit crew areas.

I have a bias for Capt. Romano, since he presided over my wedding. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I agree with the above post that Capt. Bernie Warner is an exceptional captain. He came around to each and every table in the dining room and introduced himself. Later in the cruise he brought the head chef around to introduce him also. We just liked everything about this very personable man.

I dont remember who our Captain was in 2001 on the Grand. But last November, it Was Capt. Romano. He was great. I got to talk to him when he remarried our friends on board, and also at his Cocktail Party which we were invited. He has a sorta thick Italian Accent, but he speaks slowly and you can understand him. He was a real nice guy, and I believe he will be Captain of the Carribean Princess in Oct. when we go on her.

Capt. Romano is awesome! He is all over his ship greeting passengers and crew alike. Sailed with him twice on the Grand. He is taking command of the Caribbean Princess and I'll look forward to seing him again.

I agree that Capt Warner and Capt Romano are
truly fine master's and they handle themselves
beautifully with the passengers. But my alltime
favorite was Capt Augusto Lagomarsini. He was
what I always envisioned a sea captain to look
like with his beautifully trimmed VanDyke
beard and spotless white uniform. When I was
on Crown Princess, he held the captains welcome
aboard cocktail party in the show lounge, and
rather than stand at the door, he came around
and shook hands with every passenger. What
I call a real class act.

My vote is for Captain Romano as well. Intelligent, funny, personable and very accessible. A real asset to Princess Cruises. We'll be cruising with Captain Ditel in July. Can anyone tell us a little about him? Is he as friendly as Captain Romano or Captain Guerrini?

Is Captain Romano on the Caribbean Princess now? We will be sailing in 33 days.

I agree we have sailed with Capt. Romano twice and found him to be both professional and warm. I hope we will fortunate enough to sail with him again sometime soon.

Captain Warner, Captain Proctor and any Italian http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif captain who can make sure that the phrase "navigational progress" does not sound like "navigational problems" when it reaches my ears.

Hi!

Captain Nicolo Bommarco will be in command from May until July, when he moves to the Caribbean Princess, then Captain Andy Proctor will return from leave.

Enjoy your cruise!

Well Captain Pietro Raiola must be a very very shy captain http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Captain Werner on the Diamond. Held a question and answer session on Friday with the passengers in Club Fusion. It was very interesting.

Generally speaking, I think all of the Princess Captains do a very good job.

One who comes to mind as extremely good is Andy Proctor. He is very personable, and I like his dry English sense of humor.

Another who I imagine is very good is Chris Rynd. Sailed with him three different times while he was Staff Captain - he is another with a good personality, although I imagine he runs a "tight ship", which of course is not all bad.

Captain David Lumb, who I believe has retired, also had a great personality.

APH you asked my why I feel Captain Pietro Raiola must be a very very shy Captain. He is noticable very much by his absence on informal situations.I did catch a fleeting glimpse of him in the distance at the Captain Circles Cocktail Party when his name was announced http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

After 31 days on the Royal I became a fan of Captain Julian Burgess. Always spoke. Was very
gracious. I enjoyed this Captian's way of interacting with the crew and the passengers. Made this cruise very enjoyable. He needs to give some of those stuffy, pompus Captains a few
lessons in how to conduct themselves.

I don't suppose you've got a bio of him...probably not, he was only appointed Captain in February.

Thanks.

Captain Pietro Raiola was the Captain on the Dawn princess last Aprtil/May.
I had an II inside on the Riviera deck his officers would walk along through the private door all the time. They must have all been very shy http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif.Oh I think one of them to actually smiled and said 'Good morning' one day.
On the Captains Circle Night one of the officers stood there and shook our hand as we went through the door of Vista Lounge.
The rest of the employees made up for the shyness of the Captain and his officers, and made certain we all had a very enjoyable trip. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

My all time favorite is Augusto Lagomarsini. He was very personable and truly had the appearance of an old sea salt complete with white hair and beard. He walked the decks chatting with passengers at all hours. Bernie Warner is good and has a great sense of humor and Capt. Romano is very gracious and often brings his wife and sons on board.

We just got off the Grand Princess yesterday. The captain was Andy Proctor, and I thoroughly enjoyed his daily updates. His "Yo Ho Ho and Away we go" as we were about to sail away from Cozumel back to Fort Lauderdale still makes me laugh. On our way from Princess Cays to Grand Cayman, we actually had to turn around and return to Cuba to drop off a sick passenger. He kept us updated throughout the entire deviation, which was greatly appreciated.

OK Now im confused. I read on here different Captains are gonna be on the Carribbean Princess. My favorite Captain Romano is on her now, then in July someone else takes over. Well does everyone get there info from. Yesterday I called Princess to see If Captain Romano is going to be on the CP on the Oct 30th sailing which Im on. Princess told me Captain Romano is the only Captain from now threw Oct. which I asked about on the Carribbean Princess. So see why Im confused, Everyone has something else to say. I do know from the Horses mouth Captain Romanos that is when i said with him last November on the Grand he did tell me he will be Captain on the CP. So who do you believe these boards, Princess. Etc.

Just Wondering http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

APH, in the past you have been able to post the complete list of officers for any given ship. I was wondering if you could post that info for Mid-May (post May 18) for the Grand. Thanks!

From what I understand, the captains rotate on a four months on two months off schedule (someone correct me if I'm wrong), so even if Captain Romano is the 'permanent' captain of the CP, he will still have time off, but should be back for your October cruise IF he is once again assigned to the CP.

Hi Linda,

I totally agree with you. Captain Romano is my favorite captain. He's very friendly and charming and has a great sense of humor. I hope to have the opportunity to cruise with him again. Next cruise for me will be the Golden in July, so I doubt I'll have the pleasure. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
