Has anyone been to this little island off of St. Maartin? I read that you just hire a local fisherman for $5 to take you there, and it has excellent snorkeling. Anyone been there?

Wow, yes, we just returned from there.
The water taxi is just off Orient Beach (too far to walk). I think it cost us $16 pp roundtrip to the ferry dock from Phillipsburg, and roundtrip from the island is $5 pp. The ferry/taxi only runs once an hour or so, island time!
It was a BEAUTIFUL and quiet beach. Maybe 100-150 total people there while we were. Still some topless folks. The water and beach is gorgeous. We even had a lunch of bbq'ed lobster (whole). There are two beach bars/restaurants, but there is no running water or electricity on the island.
It was one of the best excursions we took on our trip. Very relaxing and still time for shopping on the way beack to the ship.

So there is a ferry that runs to Ilet Pinel? From the cruise ship, take a taxi to Orient Beach, then catch a water taxi? Is that right?

Just tell the taxi people at the cruise ship dock you want to go to Pinel Island. they will get you to the water taxi dock. It is across from Orient, but it is a 5-10 minute drive.

Is this the same island that Princess is offering as a shore excursion: "New Waves Snorkel at Pinel Island"? Is Ilet Pinel the same as Pinel Island? (Yes that is a serious question!) Princess tour doesn't leave until 1:30 though. Would I be better off doing this on my own? Thank you...
