We were there a number of years ago. Personally I would not go back. It is the only place in the Caribbean where I did not feel completely safe. There were armed guards throughout the city. I wouldn't say that it is dangerous, but I would suggest you take a ship tour.

Our cruise in July had scheduled Caracas as well but it has already been substituted with Isla Margarita. It is my understanding that is very common so I wouldn't count on Caracas.

We were there on a cruise four years ago and I loved it. We took a ship's tour of the city that included the Murano glass factory.
Caracas is a cosmopolitan city that is over an hour's drive from the port over the mountains. There is great poverty but there's also great wealth -- some beautiful neighborhoods and big-city sights. Going to the house of Simon Bolivar is very interesting and the glass factory is fascinating. You don't want to do anything in or near the port.
