I read on the board that you can pay for your cruise with Hotel Points. So my question is can you accumlate points on say United or Marriott for taking a cruise.

If you use a branded credit card and charge your cruise to the card then I would think you are getting credit for that cruise.
I am looking into various credit cards to pay my daughters college tution at a private engineering school next year. They accept Pay Pal for payments. The Marriott credit card has a HAL award for around 350,000 points. At that level you get a 10 day cruise, choice of northern Europe or the Med in a level G room.
