View Full Version : Caribbean Princess Review

My wife and I, plus daughters Kim(13) and Katie(4) just returned from the Caribbean Princess
Inaugural. This is our review; bear in mind that this was our first Princess cruise, however we
are (well) seasoned cruisers, having sailed on 6 Celebrity ships, 1 Royal Caribbean, 1 Carnival,
1 Regeacy, and 1 Preimier.
In a nutshell, the cruise was quite good overall, and we were not dissapointed.
The ship is quite stunning, and, after a few shakey first days, the crew came together to provide
the quality of service which should be expected on a world-class cruise ship.
But, as in any cruise line and ship, there are certain strengths and weaknesses which I will attempt to critique.
Strengths:
The Caribbean Princess is certianly a magnificent vessel, elegent decor, generally well laid out,
with lots of deck space and plenty of elevators, especially midship where there are 8 elevators!
There was a concern that the additional deck (500+ passengers) would mean a fight for deck chairs, well, I'm pleased to say that there are so many open spaces on deck, so many nooks-and crannys loaded with deck chairs, that noone ever had to go without their favorite space to lounge in the sun!
The food was generally quite good, while not up to Celebrity standards in the main dining rooms.
Desserts are not a strength, while the "always available" selections provide a nice alternative
to the nitely menus.
The Sterling Steakhouse provides a very good, but not great, steakhouse experience.
Sabatini's, however, was "over the top", great food, and too much of it. If you've never done it
before, beware that you need to exercise restraint with the first 5 courses or you'll never be able to finish your entree!!!
The entertainment is also quite good and varied, allthough the main production show was not to our tastes, the performers are excellent, but the show itself was not among the better productions we have seen. But there are so many performances throughout the cruise that it's hard to sample all of them.
We had two balcony cabins on Riveira deck. The cabins were nicely appointed and our stewerd was terrific.A nice touch is that balcony cabins next to each other can be connected by a door on the the balcony partiion.
The childrens program was also quite good, our 4 year old enjoyed her time with the other children
in the 3-6 year old group. A nice touch is the pagers given to the parents, so that they can be contacted in the event of an emergency, or if the child just wants to go back to Mom & Dad.
Weaknesses:
On this ship, it seems that "Anytime Dining" equals "Anytime We Can Fit You In Dining".
I assumed that the attraction of anytime dining meant that you could see how the day gos, and eat when itwas most convienient. WRONG!!!! If you don't choose a traditional seating in the Palm, you have to make reservations way ahead of time in the Coral or Island ding rooms, lest you be told that they can't fit you in till 8:45!! So I would suggest going with a traditional seating, then making reservations as desired in the other dining rooms, or Sterlings or Sabitinis.
Other dining quibbles...the Horizon buffet has an absolutly horrible layout, especially for breakfast. Hot breakfast is only available at two stations, port and starboard, and the layout absurdly mixes entry for custom eggs/omlets with the general buffet, creating a great confusion and overall kaos in the buffet area.
Also, there is a general lack of cold drinks, only iced tea, no juices, lemonade, etc. breakfast juices are only available in pre-filled tiny glasses. And there seems to be a curious lack of half-and-half for coffee, only milk. And mild for children must be ordered, there are no milk dispensers.
Other quibbles: All reservations are made via the Princess Concierge line, which seems to be perpetially busy. Bottled water in staterooms is not automatically replenished, it needs to be ordered via room service, which is also perpetially busy.
Summary:
We enjoyed our first Princess cruise, and, quibbles asside, would book again with Princess.
However, I would like to try one of their smaller(capacity) ships to see if some of the problems we
expericenced were due to the extra capacity of the Caribbean Princess.

Hi,
Thanks for your review. We will be sailing on the Caribbean Princess on May 29 with our 5 year old daughter. I'd love to hear more about what kinds of activities are available in the 3-6 year old group.
Thanks again.

Thanks so much for your review, we've been quite hungry for any information we could get.
A couple questions if you would be so kind:

quote:
If you don't choose a traditional seating in the Palm, you have to make reservations way ahead of time in the Coral or Island ding rooms, lest you be told that they can't fit you in till 8:45!!

Could you explain that a little further? We were on our first Princess cruise last month and I am somewhat familiar with the system but don't understand what you mean.
Also, what about the "Movies Under The Stars"? Your opinion of this feature?

Hi Chris!,
As for your PC dining question, I meant that you can't just walk up to the Coral or Island
dining rooms on the Caribbean Princess and expect to be seated, since they take reservations
and tend to get booked. I had assumed that these dining rooms would be "open seating" and would
not accept reservations. That would make more sense to me.
Unfortunately we never got to experience the "movies under the stars" since there is so much
more entertainment available in competing time slots...
However we did hear positive feedback about it!

Hi Bill & Judy,
Glad to see you're already home safely and posting on the boards..i added some info to torbs' thread before i had seen that you started one or certainly would have joined yours. I would definitely agree with your comments..you at least got to see the main theatre show "let's rock"..made me feel better to hear that it wasn't that wonderful, or as you put it, not to our taste...since we never got to see it..after waiting over 15 minutes for the second seating show to start, James came out announcing technical difficulties..apparently it was a trap door glitch and so the show never went on, despite the attempts to fix the safety of the stage...like u said, entertainment was varied, and often we had to run from one event to the next because there were so many from which to choose..i personally enjoyed the comedienes (i know that is spelled wrong, just too tired to think right now), and Burt in the piano bar was FABULOUS..as far as food goes..traditional seating definitely the way to go to avoid hassles or being stuck at buffets...my husband and i both being vegetarians (although we do eat fish) were very pleased with the food selections, seems there is a lot more "healthy style" food available as an option..something we often worry about since we're not typical meat and potatoe type of people..have to say that my husband also enjoyed the scholars at sea program..i left it up to him to learn about computers and digital photography ( i personally was on vacation and used free time for hot tubs)..work out room was bigger and better than any other ship fitness room i've seen...again, i was on vacation and didn't exercise either, but hubby was impressed and enjoyed using it...was disappointed in the art auctions as we've purchased before on other ships, but they were run by outside dealers and this was a princess in house auction dealer, so didn't feel like there was as much availability, nor bargains as other ships..will post more after getting some sleep..overall a great vacation, and ports were very nice

Thanks so much for taking the time to post. I have one question(so far); you mention the children's program divided as ages 3-6 in one group, I had been told 3-7, this is a concern for me as I will have a 6 year old and 7 year old when we sail in Sept. Are you sure it was to age 6 and not 7(although to age 6 makes more sense I think but, doesn't work for me).

Chloeleigh, I also attended a few art auctions and was disapointed in the selection and prices. I felt much more comfortable dealing with Park West. Especially when the auctioneer was hawking the Tarkay impersonator they represent. When has an artist been successful blatently copying another artist's works? And then I asked the openning bid on a signed Dali litho...$3800???

Pamalazzz, the children's program breaks down to 3-6, 7-9, 10-12 and teens.
Each has their own area.

We are traveling on the 5/29 sailing as well with our daughter who will be 4 in September. This will be her second cruise and she is very excited since last time, she was too young to be in the kids club. Maybe we will meet you on the ship!!

bcollan,
are you sure about the ages on the kids programs? My daughter was 8 last year and was in the 8-12 yo group and will be really upset if she has to go "backwards" this year now that she's nine. The princess website lists ages as 3-7, 8-12, 13-17.

They will probably group the 6 and 7 yr olds together, depending on numbers, 8-10 and 11 and 12's together. If its different, they will put your 7yr old with the 6 yr old, and they will have a great time.

Bill...Welcome back and thank you for the review especially the dining situation. We were considering PC but now will definately keep our traditional. Did you get a chance to go to the Cafe Caribe at all, and if you did exactly what is it? Is it an area that is just open at night? Also, thanks for the info on the buffet lines.

I noticed in one of the other posts that the outdoor movie screen had videos playing during the day. I really, really hope that doesn't mean they've eliminated a band by the pool? Excuse me for being paranoid, but as a former professional musician who's seen canned music replace live musicians many times over the years, this made my warning bells go off. I would be sorely disappointed if I couldn't hear some live Marley tunes while soaking in the Caribbean sun! Info please! thanks

Some PC dining advice. We were on the Golden last week and a lot of people ran into the same problem. They allowed reservations but they were all booked by 11:00a.m. then when you got there you had a 1/2 hour to 45 minute wait. ONE SOLUTION -The 8 of us met a great group of waiters our 1st night and stayed with them after the second night they had our table waiting we just needed to pop down at 5:30 to tell them if we would be dining early (starting at 5:30-6:30) or starting later (7:00-8:00). You also recieved the consistant service that people enjoy in traditional.

Thanks for the great review! Did you get a massage or use the spa? If so, how was it? My favorite spot on the Grand was the aft pool area and the deck above it that had the bar and 2 hot tubs. Is this area the same on the cP? I know the kids area is also in this area, will that be a distraction? We have a balcony on the Lido deck (L310), will the sound from the ourdoor movies be loud enough to hear from our room?
Glad to hear you had such a good time. Hope you can answer some of my questions. Thanks

kimandtim, well, they took the 3-12 year olds and broke them into 3 groups on this ship, each with a separate room. And the ranges were definately 3-6, 7-9, and 10-12. It was painted in big numbers on the doors http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. But I don't know how (in)flexable they are about it.
cruzenmama, sorry, we didn't try Cafe Caribe. It's part of the Horizon Buffet during the day, and has table service at night, supposedly serving local Caribbean dishes.
carribean2000, the big screen did play music videos during the day, but it is located on the stern-most of the two main mid-ship pools. They had a live band sea days at the forward-most of these pools.
LarryF, my wife had a massage and loved it. As for your other questions, if I remember correctly, that aft area has a hot tub, a small pool and a children's wading pool. The children's area is on deck 16, right below this area. And since the movie screen is quite far aft, I doubt it will bother you.

live band at sea days near pool, my husband is also a musician and he really enjoyed connecting with the musicians of DEEP BLUE, who of course peddle their $20 CD so that u can continue feeling that relaxing caribbean music long after your vacation comes to an end...the spa looked lovely, my husband did indulge in a massage and couldn't stop talking about the heated thermal tiles..definitely heard positive feedback about the lotus spa..obviously a plus that they put that under princess control rather than some outside company...unlike the art auctions being under princess control rather than outside gallery like park west, i was rather disappointed in princess art auctions since i was looking forward to purchasing some art as i had on previous cruises

just another thought..regarding teen programs..my 11 year old daugheter did not want to go to the kid programs as she thought they were babyish (i didn't think it sounded bad to build rollercoasters, and dissect animals in the kid science program, but she wasn't into it, and many 10 and 11 year olds that i met with their parents in the hot tub had the same thoughts, they weren't going to the program...my 14 1/2 year old son had a blast popping in and out of the teen program with freedom...my daughter was onboard with another girlfriend, both are 13..they enjoyed the teen program for some activities, although since it's 13-17 and i overheard many older teenage guys talking in hallways about which girl they were "going to go for" in generalit sort of set off an alarm in my mind..didn't need some 16 year old guy taking advantage of our young budding daughters, so we were thrilled when the girls decided to not stay out latenight partying with the group

Christyd,
The main pool on the Diamond inaugural had a live band -- maybe they fired them, who knows? But they were there pretty regularly, when I walked past to find a quieter pool (aft, or lotus spa). The few times I saw the band on a break they had pre-recorded music playing, but there was often live music on the Diamond poolside on MY cruise.

Only 2 more questions, I promise!
1. Did you meet with a group from CC boards, and if so, where and when is a good place to do it.
2. What were the prices like in the Spa? Massages, facials, etc. if you remember what they were.
Thanks to everyone for all the insight into the CP and October is waaay too far away!

minnjudy, balconies on Riviera, Aloha, & Baja are all covered and about 4ft deep. Caribe balonies are bigger, and Dolphin the biggest, but both of these are at least partly open above. Dolphin balconies look to be almost entirely open.
cloeliegh, were any of the boys you overheard talking about Kim? http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gifhttp://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gifhttp://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif...No, I really don't want to know!http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif But seriously, she had run-of-the-ship, a great time, a few (very) late nites and we literally had to drag her off the ship! She's a good kid, doesn't drink, and we trust her not to be coerced into doing anything she doesn't want herself. That said, parents be warned that Princess does little to "police" the ship at night. All the teens are treated as adults, so midnight swims and 2am steaks in the Horizon are available and taken advantage of. So it's up to the parents to keep their teens out of trouble. I heard a few tales of teen drunkeness and daredevil activity of which I don't aprove.

If you choose the PC dining option, can you make all of your dinner reservations for the week at once in the "non traditional" dining rooms?
For instance, we find that 8:30 or 8:45 is too late to eat for us, but we aren't nearly ready at 5:30 or 6PM either. Could you request say a 7:30 reservations for the entire week?
Thanks for sharing the infromation!

H Everyone - we also just got back (we are very sad to be home - it was a great week) The growing pains were obvious to former cruisers but nothing overwhelming (just ask anyone on board about the time & the clocks that all had a different time - aaaaahhhh! but I kept my watch at a steady time and kept it with me)
* the ship is beautiful and the small intimate locations are great but I did have some trouble acclimating to where everything was, which I have never "suffered" from previously,
* I saw the "groom" during the trip & many family members but unfortunately not the bride,
* the live band at the pool was also there many afternoons as we got back on board for sea days,
* the spa was very nice but please note I was lucky that my guide showed us the relaxation room while many others did not get the tour, the spa was feeling the newbie organization problems but they worked most of them out during the week - the at sea days were crazy but all of our appointments were after we returned on port days - which was quieter & less expensive (all of the prices are on princess.com in the Lotus Spa section)
* traditional dining (we did Late seating) was very good and our waiter Eduardo was great - the desserts were good for us - the souffles & the sorbets/ice creams were very good! and the beef wellington for all of us who had it was fantastic, the alternate always available was a nice touch.
* we did hear that PC was not fun, one lady I spoke with was highly disappointed with having to eat at the buffet on a formal night since they only had a very late seating available for her anywhere else.
* we had a mini-suite on Dolphin deck(9) D522 which was very nice but it is a little weird to know that everyone above you can see you - 2 TV's, full bath (a little tile floor problem but nothing major)
* the 2 teenage girls in our group, ages 15 & 16, were okay with the teen program and did a few things but not many
* in Cozamel, the new pier is really nice - enough shopping and food & drink, that we never made it downtown....the Dolphin tour was expensive but not to be missed (some folks organized the same basic tour on their own for just a little bit less in price once you added in the cab & park fee) The park also had a swin with Sea Lion tour that looked great - sorry didn't check the price.
And yes, we did meet other CC members - the first organized meeting was at Morgan's bar directly after the 4pm muster drill during sailaway - it was great putting names, logon names & faces together! It also made for alot of friendly encounters during the cruise...also it ended up that Cruzingirl, yensid1071 & our group all sat next to each other at dinner.
If anyone has any other questions, I am sure one of us can answer it for you...
Bon Voyage!

Igloo42,
My daughter is coming with me in June. She is 17 1/2. Is she or isn't she allowed in the clubs, lounges, and or the bars?
I know she can't drink due to her age, but can she go into these places? Thanks in advance.

HI DB - I concur with Bill - no limitation and maybe because there were so many kids on our cruise but noone really stopped the older kids from doing anything late at night or otherwise - but both the girls in our party were up early everyday so there night activities were limited.

Hi! I'm glad to read some reviews of this new ship...I will be cruising her on May 29th and can't wait! Already have my spa and shore excursions booked, and have late traditional dining, so I'm all set.
I do have a couple of "silly" questions:
Did anyone do the karaoke? How long did they allow for it?
Did anyone notice if they had the "Survivor Challenge" going on? Did this on the Grand last summer and it was a blast!
Was Skywalkers overloaded with teens? (I hate that!) Who was the DJ?
How were the aerobics classes? Did you have to pay extra for pilates?
What was the average age on the ship, and were there many singles? My experience has been that there are many more "30ish" singles on RC than on Princess, but still had to ask! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I'm 37, and will be travelling with my mom, my sis and a friend of my mom's.
Thanks for any responses!

Heather, sorry to say but I cannot answer most of your questions. I didn't see anything about a "survivor challenge", I think it may have been replaced by "princess idol", which I can't comment on because it was at 11pm each nite, and I was usually settled in my stateroom by that time http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. The average age seemed to be around 40 something, not counting kids and college kids, can't say how many are single though.

We're booked at "Hooves" for horseback riding in Ocho Rios, and with "Sotos" for the Stingrays in Grand Cayman. Both of these were booked privately, not through Princess. Any questions, let me know, i'll be glad to help!

Hi - there is an open house the first day on board (which we did not get to go too - needed to be poolside for a nice sunny drink...). Once you check in at the main desk you will be shown to the appropriate locker room with a key for your locker, robe & sandals are provided (nice & roomy), you are then instructed to go down the hall to the relaxation area which is a series of comfy chairs & water/tea is provided but not everyone is informed that at the other end of that room is a relaxation thermal suite -open door by the window that you can see the pool through - includes heated relaxation tables (not enough of them when it is busy but 1 ususually opens up shortly as folks are called for their treatments), also in this area are a couple of rooms which are wet & somewhat dry steam/sauna rooms - the 1st one on your left was called a Japanese Spa and had wonderful heated curved "couches" (they seemed to be hotter earlier in the week but I think it was just my sunburn speaking to me...). The staff does canvas the thermal area to look for you since they know you checked in, so don't worry about being lost for your treatment.

Thanks for all the information. I'm glad you all had a good time. i have one question: I have never gone on a ship with PC and one of my favorite things is to meet up with people I don't know every evening at dinner. I have heard that if you do traditional dining alot of times you are sitting at an empty table and if you opt for PC at a large table people are often times half through eating when you are seated. Do you find this to be true and is there any answers (way to ecperience trad dining) on these ships. Maybe I am the only one who feels this way http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Thanks for the information. Jen

Thank you all for the great information. It sounds like most of you had a fantastic cruise in spite of it being an innaugral. You described the relaxation room and I wondered if that is only for people who have booked a treatment in the spa. On previous cruises I would enjoy the saunas and hot tubs after using the exercise room. This sounds even better so please let me know if it is open to all. Thank you.

Just an FYI to folks booked on this ship. My husband and I sailed her on April 3. We chose PC dining and had NO problems whatsoever. We never made a reservation. We walked into the Coral and Island dining rooms and were seated within 3-4 minutes. And yes, we ate at peak times and at 5:30 when they opened. They have two lines...one for folks with reservations on the left side of the entrance, and one for folks without on the right side. We didn't care who we ate with, as this was a way to meet other folks, so we were seated at tables with others who didn't have reservations. There was always a line for the folks with reservations. My suggestion is, if you really like the anytime dining, do it. If you really want to eat at a specific time, make a reservation when you board. If not, you will be seated when you get there with others...

Thanks to everyone for all the fantastic information!
The Carribean will be our first balcony cruise. We are bood in a BC cabin on the Riveria deck.
I know everyone is different but do you think the Caribe balcony is better value then the Riveria or Baja?
I want to make this as special as possible and would be willing to upgrade if necessary.

msschanckel, I believe we rightly or wrongly formed our opinion of PC dining on the first full day at Princess Cay. The morning Horizon Buffet that day was downright ugly, then, when we went to the Coral dining room at 5:45 we were told there were no tables available till 8:45.
We were discouraged that day, and retreated to open seating breakfast and the Palm (which we had first seating) for dinner. Possibly enough people were rebuffed that first day that they seeked alternatives latter days, including open seating breakfasts, Palm dinners and Cafe Caribe dinners that the congestion relieved itself on following days.
cruzincurt, BTW, we weren't bozos who vacated our first seating reservations, we asked to be changed to PC the first night. Luckily, they didn't reassign our table, and we were able to use it for the rest of the cruise (aside for our nites at Sterlings and Sabatinis). Also, there were plenty of empty tables in the Palm for first seating the whole cruise.

Thanks, In my opinion, the PC approach should be that you can dine whenever you show up, not allow someone to book a solid reservation at the same time every night. IMHO if you want a set dining time every night, book the traditional; early or late. I'll be really pissed to be standing in line while there are open tables waiting for someone to show up.
I look at PC as being variable each night, whenever we get ready to dine that day, we go.
What upset us last Princes trip was that we were late traditional at a table of eight. Sometimes one or two other couples didn't show up because that night they chose PC for that night. I say make up your mind so your table mates don't sit there waiting for no shows.

We just returned from the 4/3 Caribbean Princess cruise. The ship is beautiful. The ill mannered children were horrible. We had to listen to them running up and down the hall at 1:30 A.M. - called and were told that "we have to be made aware of this" and "they are paying guests, too" Imagine.....in the pool on deck 16 aft at least 6 boys were cannon balling two middle aged women non stop. They got large glasses of ice and were throwing ice at eachother while running between guests and on top of chairs that were unoccupied ! We've been on numerous cruises, but this one was awful. I think parents should be responsible for their children at all times.

Hi Bill & Judy,
Glad to see you're already home safely and posting on the boards..i added some info to torbs' thread before i had seen that you started one or certainly would have joined yours. I would definitely agree with your comments..you at least got to see the main theatre show "let's rock"..made me feel better to hear that it wasn't that wonderful, or as you put it, not to our taste...since we never got to see it..after waiting over 15 minutes for the second seating show to start, James came out announcing technical difficulties..apparently it was a trap door glitch and so the show never went on, despite the attempts to fix the safety of the stage...like u said, entertainment was varied, and often we had to run from one event to the next because there were so many from which to choose..i personally enjoyed the comedienes (i know that is spelled wrong, just too tired to think right now), and Burt in the piano bar was FABULOUS..as far as food goes..traditional seating definitely the way to go to avoid hassles or being stuck at buffets...my husband and i both being vegetarians (although we do eat fish) were very pleased with the food selections, seems there is a lot more "healthy style" food available as an option..something we often worry about since we're not typical meat and potatoe type of people..have to say that my husband also enjoyed the scholars at sea program..i left it up to him to learn about computers and digital photography ( i personally was on vacation and used free time for hot tubs)..work out room was bigger and better than any other ship fitness room i've seen...again, i was on vacation and didn't exercise either, but hubby was impressed and enjoyed using it...was disappointed in the art auctions as we've purchased before on other ships, but they were run by outside dealers and this was a princess in house auction dealer, so didn't feel like there was as much availability, nor bargains as other ships..will post more after getting some sleep..overall a great vacation, and ports were very nice

http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

hi
thanks for taking the time to all who have posted. i will be sailing on the carribean princess in may. i am upset to hear about the unruly children, and i hope they straighten that out. i would be very upset to have kids knocking on the door in the middle of the night.
How was the captain's party? did anyone order
room service? Did anyone attend the anniversary party? what type of nightly entertainment did they have? did they have any adult comedy shows?
how many pools do they have?
Does anyone know the diiner theme nights and what kind of food is served?
how was the provate island, do they have hammoks? any shopping? someone mentioned you could get a massage there?
did you have to tender in?
I am glad that i have a fixed meal time, as thre PC does not sound as if it running smoothly.
i did it on NCL and it was awful.
hope to hear form you soon. What time di you all get off the ship and get to the airport by?

Regarding PC Dining... Just off the 4/10 sailing of the Caribbean Princess and very much enjoyed PC dining. Luckily on the first day I had few questions and the service desk informed me to make reservations for the week. When we did make our reservations, they tried to put us at the same time in the same dining room each night. We ended up eating 4 nights in Island, 1 in Coral, 1 in Sterling and 1 at the Buffet. Since all of the Dining Rooms are pretty much the same, I would recommend going to the same dining room each night. We varied the times depending on the days activities (early when we were at sea, and later for port days and days when the Kids Club fed the kids). I felt by the 2nd or 3rd day the host (Mauro) knew exactly who we were. In fact, on the last day he called me by name and said he had missed us the last couple of nights. Also, they were pretty flexible about changing reservation times. When we needed a later reservation time, the Passenger Services desk said that the reservation is held for 15 minutes and then cancelled automatically. The line with no reservation did seem to get long between 7:00 and 8:30, but that is their peak time.

It seems the biggest problem was people suddenly showing up at 7 PM, all wanting tables for two. For a number of reasons, this isn't really workable. Just like Outback or any other place that is first come - first served, you can only do so much with the staff and space that you have.
For future reference, the Palm dining room (traditional) has many tables for two that went unused during the entire cruise. It's an option for those who don't wish to share the company of others.

We are just back from the 4/10 cruise and loved every minute. We only made reservations one night. The rest of the nights we walked in and had no problem getting a table. We liked sitting with and meeting new people at dinner. Everything was wonderful and Im having terrible cruise withdrawl. Especially when my son asked what was for dinner. I told him to go out and sit down and see who comes with the menu.

Lovinsea- On the first formal night they have a Captain's reception. If you have personal choice dining you can choose if you would rather go to the earlier or later one. They serve cocktails (a little watered down, but still good) and canapes and you can meet the Captain.

Okay, now I am really confused. I thought that if you wanted to sit alone as a couple (table for two) that PC was the way to go...(dine with whom, where and when you want) I chose PC dining specifically to obtain tables for two. Now with so many conflicting reports on PC, I am starting to wonder if I should switch, even though I think first is too early and second is too late. Any comments, anyone?

I can tell you the reality of PC dining on our Golden cruise last month: It worked great for our party of two every night.
We happened to just walk in and have a lovely dinner the first night, two of us seated at a table for four. On the way out we asked if we could have the same waiter every night and we got the same waiter AND the same table.
Now, On the CP I understand that all you have to do is pick up the phone and dial D.I.N.E. from your cabin to make reservations at any of the restaurants. Somebody correct me if that is wrong.
I think that you'll be fine with PC and you'd probably just get waitlisted this close to your sailing anyway.
As confusing as it sounds here it all makes sense once you get on board. Trust me.
Happy Cruising

I will take a shot at it, but I am probably wrong. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gifOn the Carribean, there are 500 extra passengers. usually traditional is filled fast, so the extra will go Pc. They have to maximize space so they use the big tables, not knowing how many will show up, and when. So they put the tables for two into traditional, knowing that dining room will fill up on both seatings. If someone changes to Pc during the cruise, they can then put someone from the trad. waiting list, into that spot. They should have added a third Pc dining room. Maybe they will on Carribean 2. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I haven't tried PC dining, but also noticed a empty tables in the dining room for 2nd seating traditional. As Rob said, the backup would occur when everyone went to eat at the same time, which is exactly what happens on weekends around here if/when we decide to go out to eat.
The Captain's Welcome party was held in 3 different lounge areas at the same time, centered in the Atrium. Yep, the drinks were watered down. The rum punch was more punch than rum. Actually, I think they only put in some ru-... not even a half shot of rum.... http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif But I guess they save the full amount for those paying for drinks.
One very minor gripe I had about Movies Under the Stars... I didn't see the feature movie, but did watch "Finding Nemo" when they showed it on the big screen. As the sound got louder, they would turn the volume down. Then once it was more quiet, they'd turn it back up. I'm not sure if they did it for the reuglar movie all week, but at times it was a bit distracting. Other than that, I enjoyed seeing the movie out there. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif We had an aft starboard cabin on Aloha (A635) and never heard the movie during the week, so I don't think volume would be a problem.
Goldengirl, we didn't have any problems with kids on the inaugural. I have started another thread which lists the menus (I'm too lazy to see if you posted there already http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ). It lists each theme night and the always available selections. I think another cruiser is in the process of uploading the Patters to show the activities and entertainment. The private island, Princess Cays, is very relaxing. I don't recall hammocks or massages, but they had *plenty* of lounge chairs (just like the deck chairs) available. Yes, you tender in from the ship, but the ride isn't bad (as long as the swells aren't big). I hope this helps! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Excellent review and I agree with Bcollan. April 10th sailing. Food was good to very good. The PC dining was horrible first 2 nights. Reservation line had 30-40 people waiting when no reservations had 3 people. So we went on that line and told the we had a reservation and he said no problem. Got better after day 3. Dont think I like PC dining....It basically 5 nights of where are you from and how many cruises have you been on....After several night you want to start making things up. No rapport with wait staff.
Seemed like more people 'dressed' on the Dawn in October than this cruise.
No escargot or king crab legs or free cappuccino at dinner like the Dawn in October 2003. I think the buffet area was tight as well and not because of people. The stairways were tight as well. Seemed smaller than the Dawn. I agree they should have lemonade or fruit punch available as well as the iced tea. Do they really need to charge for Ice cream? They didnt on the Dawn in October
Although brand new I think the inside looked like the Dawn. In retrospect the Dawn looked pretty good for being older. Theater was nice with no obstructions and always a seat. I dont get the one arm bandits in club fusion...thats a waste.
Getting a massage you usually hear some sort of soothing sounds or music. I asked for some wither and got a blasting symphony with cymbals and all....I said at least its something but please turn it down.
Manager said how did I like the thermal spa? I said what is the point of it? She said relaxation. Then I said its hard to relax when you hear all the noise form upstairs (basketball court I think) She said but how did you like it? Again I said I didnt think it served its purpose. She said they had someone looking into more insulation.
Wireless Headphones in gym didnt seem to work...they said low batteries? Very nice equipment in the gym.
Tender operations seemed organized. extra people did not seem to add crowds. The regular chair hogs that just put a towel down and rarely sit down will always be the problem.
Volume during the day at the pool with the screen was good. Sometimes the volume was too loud and it sounded way too distorted. Unless the focus is the movie that sound should be background souns and not overbearing. Even when the Cruise staff were doing games the mikes were too loud.....we heard what was going on and making it louder didnt make it more fun or get us more involved.
Cannot walk all the way around on the promenade deck which is silly. Have to go up stairs at the bow. Silly silly silly. Promenade seemed smaller than on the Dawn as well.
No Grand Cayman......due to weather conditions....Darn.
Balcony on Caribe deck is huge. Huge!! Half covered half exposed...very very nice. Lots of hanging space and drawers. Shower is very tight. Seemed a bit bigger on the dawn. Could not bend at all and shower head was not removeable. Refrigerator is a nice touch
Comedians were good...two singers were good as well. Stage show was ok...said they had some stage problems??
Luggage out at 5PM on last day is ridiculous. My 12 am was still fine....Disembarkation was smooth.
I hope Princess reads some of our posts and gets the general feel....Still had a great time. Bad day cruising is better than a good day at the office.

Roe2ship:
You might want to try one of the traditional seatings. One of the problems with traditional is that many of the people who book will use the Anytime dining rooms if they want to see the shows. The shows are NOT timed for traditional diners. The Palm dining room is much larger than the equivalent rooms on the Grand and Golden. Most of the tables around us also had only two people at them for the entire cruise. (April 3 sailing).
The only time we've done Anytime, we asked to be seated at a table with others and never had to wait. The only times we were issued pagers was when we requested a larger table so that we could eat with others we had met on board.

We also just returned from the 4/10 sailing. Here are some of our impressions of the new ship:
Embarkation: Long lines at 12:50 but moved fast. Inside Express Line (Caribe) was longer than regular but moved faster. Platinum line emptyied and we were motioned over there for a very fast check (passport for identification purpose) and on our way.
Stateroom: C428 - the same beautiful design and decor as our Nov cruise on Golden. Large (9x9), partially covered balcony looking down on an entirely open Dolphin minisuite balcony, which appeared to be a trifle smaller than ours. Balcony furniture was upgraded a little and lounges had nice, comfortable pads on them.
The robes were not terry cloth, but a thinner, waffleweave fabric. Probably better for the tropics.
Spa: DH reported that exercise area seemed the same size as Golden but was much better equipped. Also felt that the location of the steam room and sauna was much better--big improvement. Didn't try any spa treatments.
Entertainment: The electrical problem mentioned before was partly fixed Fri and we were able to see a portion of "Let's Rock." It should be good. Easy to understand why they needed electricity to move the sets and effects. Other nights were filled in with singers, comedians, jugglers.
"Movies Under the Stars": This is a delightful experience on a calm night, lying back in a comfortable lounge watching a good movie. You are not given tickets but must call the always-busy Concierge Service to make a reservation as soon as possible. We went back for a second time on Thurs but the wind blowing through the speakers was amplified making a constant roaring sound that drowned out the dialogue at times. We left after 10 min.
PC Dining: We loved the freedom of it on the Golden and were looking forward to the same. But it was a totally different experience. There were 2 very long lines at the door, one for those with reservations and one for those without. Also, there were many empty tables inside. We asked our waiter about the problem of the lines and he said "it is not our problem, just a problem with the passengers not making reservations. We were trained in how it should run but passengers have to reserve for week." (To us, this takes away the freedom of Personal Choice.) Asked about the pagers used by other ships, he said that they had them but "not using them now." The next day we called for reservations and, after spending most of the morning getting through to the always-busy Concierge line, could only get them for 5:30 or 9:00 for the rest of the week. It seems that the reservations system is being badly misused by some who reserve times for the entire week just in case they want them and then go elsewhere, leaving so many empty tables and long lines at the door. Sort of like the chair hogs by the pool.
Club Caribe: This is a great innovation and should help relieve the dining room situation. The area appears to be part of Horizon Court during the day but around 5 pm the tables are set with tableclothes, candles, etc. You are seated and can order drinks and then go to the buffet when you want. The menu is the same as the dining rooms plus some more exotic choices. We enjoyed lobster and beef wellington.
Sterling Steakhouse: A great meal, well worth the $15 surcharge for the quality, service and quiet. No trouble getting reservations that same day and no wait.
Liquor: For some reason, the liquor we bought in Montego Bay and Cozumel was not taken from us when we returned to the ship from port. Did anyone else have this experience?
Overall, it was a wonderful cruise and we are already planning another on this ship in Nov. Hopefully, by then the PC dining problem will be solved.

If you choose traditional, you can switch to PC but not vice versa, correct? The same rule should apply both ways. If confirmed traditional diners are occupying the PC dining room with a reservation, this is obviously causing chaos. They are basically taking up two different tables. As the previous post said it is becoming like a chair hog situation. I think the Princess should make a rule if you are confirmed traditional, you cannot switch either.

We just got off the CP and had traditional dining. I think I will stick with that. We had the early seating and always made it to the shows. We felt they were timed perfectly. There were several empty tables in Traditional. Many for 2. Throughout the week different people would show up at these tables so maybe they filled them when the other rooms are full.
