DH and I arrived home yesterday. We enjoyed the Oosterdam's first Alaskan cruise of the season. We had the awesome experience of being the first ship of the season at Hubbard Glacier. How fabulous!
On Friday, we were to dock in Victoria at 6:00PM so dinner was moved up to 5:PM. At 4:00PM the Superstar Finals were held in the large theatre. For those not aware, all week there are preliminaries narrowing down the field to three finalists. We had not attended any of these but were looking forward to the very best of pax talent.
The first contestant was a 14 year old girl from Tennessee and she sang 2 Brittany Spears songs (ugh). Then there was a handsome young man who sang a very pleasant ballad. The last was a middle aged Tennessee gentleman with an equally nice voice. Our CD, Que, said the selection that he expected to sing wouldn't come up on the machine so at the last minute another selection was substituted, The Impossible Dream.
Then the handsome young man came out again and he realized the intro to his song wasn't correct so he exited the stage to press in the correct numbers. Meanwhile the Tennessee gentleman was asked to return and he belted out The Twist and had the whole theatre hooting and hollering and when he started doing the twist had everyone on their feet in the aisles going wild. Que said he had never experienced such a reaction from an audience and it was by far the best performance he had ever seen from a pax. The handsome young man returned and did a pleasant number but there was little audience enthusiasm. It was 5:00PM and 'natives were getting restless' and wanted to go to dinner but waited while Que, his assistant, and the ship's comedian commented and tallied their votes. Everyone wanted to be there so they could applaud the winner. The handsome young man won. The audience booed loudly and turned and left the theater.
We were on the Oosterdam in February and attended the Superstar Finale. The three contestants were a spunky old woman and two younger, possibly more talented pax. The audience definitely was behind the spunky woman and she won and everyone applauded and felt happy and went off with a smile. :p
But on this cruise the pax were disgusted and at dinner the subject was the source of much irritation. So it seemed a disappointing way to end a cruise. By the way, we are from CA.

Well, there was a shocker on American Idol this past week! You just never can tell. Sounds like fun, though. Welcome back.

Which nights were your formal nights on the Oosterdam Alaska cruise? We are booked for September 9th and can't wait.

It seems as though the really talented ones rarely win anymore anywhere.

Formal nights were the first sea day and the day in Ketchikan. There was also an informal night on Hubbard Glacier day.

I'm just back from the Oosterdam Inside Passage cruise so let me know if you have any other questions.

Juliecat,

Sorry to disappoint you, but Oosterdam does not sail the Inside Passage. They definitely sail to the West of Vancouver Island and are primarily in open sea on the way to Alaska.

Hi, we had been in contact earlier on one of the boards. (Ray & Barb and also our son and daughter-in-law.) I've been doing a Roll Call but unable to find any more people on the Oosterdam to Alaska 9/9/06. Have you heard from anyone else? I guess we will be arriving in Seattle on 9/7 to spend a couple of days sightseeing and will not head home until the day after the cruise. We've never been to Seattle and understand there is a lot to see there. Have you decided on any shore excursions yet? Let's try to find some more people taking this trip.

We just returned from our 1st cruise ever - Oosterdam to AK. Had a fabulous time. Our daughter was a finalist in the Superstar program. She and the two gentlemen left were all very talented. The final tally was a 3-way tie - which they said was a 1st ever.

Someone told our family that the previous wk that 2 of the finalists were with a large group and when the winner was the other person - there was a lot of booing. This passenger seemed to think that weighed in on the judges decision to call a tie. Personally, I thought they were all equally good and a tie was a fair way to reward all three.

Sometimes when a large group is traveling together, one or two vocal people can give the whole group a poor reputation. The group on our cruiese was very supportive of all contestants and Ashley was greeted by many of them with compliments and best wishes.
