We are taking ms Noordam this summer and had just a couple of questions for those who have had the pleasure of sailing with her. First, we anticipate on taking tons of pictures with our digital camera. Is there anyway to download and save these pictures to a CD using the onboard computers in the internet cafe? (We will, of course, bring the CDs and the memory card reader.) It just seems such trouble to lug a laptop onboard if it is not necessary. Or, we may need to just buy more memory cards.:D
My second question pertains to the DVD players in the rooms. Does the DVD players play US-coded DVDs? We have a couple of movies that we'd like to bring along to watch on the DVD players, but don't want to bring them along if they won't work with the DVD player. (European DVDs have a different code on them and won't work on US DVD players, and vice versa.) Of course, we can always rent them too.
Thanks!

The computers in the Explorations Cafe will not accept any sort of device, so you will not be able to backup your photos there. However, I saw recently on the Oosterdam where the photo center had a machine that accepts all forms of memory cards/sticks for backing up photos onto CDs. I would think the Noordam has the same thing. I didn't inquire about the charge.
Your in-room DVD players will play your movies fine. And titles are available at the front desk if you need more.
Enjoy your cruise!

To expand on Jim's answer to you, the computers in the explorers lounge (internet cafe) are locked up and you have no access to them. This is to prevent a virus being introduced to the system by accident. If you own a laptop to me that is the best way to go. I always take my laptop. For one thing using your own laptop you can save yourself some money. That is because you can work your emails off line and only need to sign on to send and download. On my 62 day cruise last fall I purchased the 1000 minute package which was available on that cruise for $250. It turned out to be to much as I had over 300 minutes left at the end which I burned up needlessly. The people who were using the internet cafe were purchasing more and more minutes because you are online the entire time you are composing and sending emails. Also the nice thing about having your own laptop you can send pictures with your emails. You cannot do that using the ships computers.
As Jim said you can have CD's created at the photolab but again that is not cheap running somewhere between $15 and $20 a piece. Depending on how many pictures you take it might get expensive. I took 6,000 pictures on my 62 day cruise:eek:

Take along a stack of blank CD's. Find a fellow passenger using their laptop. Strike up a conversation. Offer to give them an extra blank CD for everyone they burn for you.:D

Enjoy your cruise! On the Prinsendam, there was a card reader at the manager's desk. The manager would insert the card and would copy files or pictures into a folder that could be accessed from the workstations. You could then upload the file in an Email, but you could not burn CD's. A couple of times, I had text files that I wanted to print. I transferred them from my laptop to my camera card, took the card to the computer lab and the manager printed the file for me. The reader would accept most card's but not XD cards. One of our friends would bring his camera and USB cable to me, we'd do a camera to CD transfer and then he could take the CD to the computer room to send the pictures by Email.
The main reason for not allowing copying from camera cards to CD's is because that is a profit source for the photo lab.
