27.2% are opposed to formal nights or to dress codes of any kind. INTERESTING.

Just got back from my first HAL first Alaska cruise, and based on my observations, a lot of people are in favor of casual!

I want a dress code to remain. I prefer to not let it degrade to the lowest common denominator. While I want to retain formal nights, I wouldn't object to removal of semi-formal nights. But whatever the dress code is, I do wish the cruise lines would enforce them.

Let's face it. North Americans dress like vagrants most of the time - even on HAL.
If it were not for the fact that they are such mongrels - we wouldn't need to have dress codes. If they were truly civilized, their mode of dress would far surpass any basic minimum dress codes established by a cruise line.

Woody Allens's old quote, "I refuse to join any club that would accept someone like me as a member" couldn't ring more true in America today.

And what country are we blessed with having you from as a good will ambassador?

And by the way Mr. Purebreed .....
That quote was made by Groucho Marx .....It was only repeated by Woody Allen in the movie Annie Hall.

If 80 of the votes prefer to see dress codes remain the same and be enforced, then that approximately 50% of the folks polled should be making those feelings known on their comment cards and with the matri 'd and dining room staff. If that percentage is accurate, then only by voicing opinions will the cruise lines be motivated to begin strictly enforcing the dress codes.

Of course, I wonder how scientific this poll is and what cruise lines they sail ... because it just doesn't jive with what I see when onboard. It also doesn't jive with the actions taken in the dining rooms with staff unwilling to enforce the dress code. That fact alone tells me that the cruise line doesn't take the dress code very seriously, probably because the marketing people at the line have information that their customers aren't that in favor of mandatory formal nights.

But, if there is truly a majority who is burned over the lax enforcement of the dress code, then that majority needs to become very vocal ... both on the ship and after the cruise ... in letting the powers that be know that they expect certain standards maintained. Only then will you see change.

Think about smoking. At one time, smoking was totally accepted everywhere. Today, it is prohibited in most public places, and something that is barely tolerated when it is allowed. Why? Because the majority of folks don't smoke and don't like it. They made their feelings known, very vocally, and have thus gotten their way in this regard. No reason why enforcement of the dress code in dining rooms aboard ship can't be gained in the same manner ... assuming, of course, that it is really a majority opinion that we are dealing with here.

With all the choices in dining onboard any particular ship let alone a particular cruiseline, why does the idea of a couple of formal nights upset so many people? IMO the formal dining nights are part of the "experience". Sort of a throw back to the grand old days. If you really don't care for the formal nights there are other choices available for dining, you could even order room service and dine au natural if that be your choice! 2 nights out of 7 is not at all an unreasonable amount of time to "put on the dog". I enjoy things like High Tea and the Cigar Lounge. I enjoy sitting in the lobby area, having a cappucino or out on the Promenade Deck and watching the world go by. My fear of degrading the cruise experience would be that in eliminating those things that set it apart from the normal day-to-day, how far down the road is the cruiseline that sells out its dining venues to MacDonalds and the Waffle House!!
Why book yourself for a week or two on a line that embraces the "Formal" concept of cruising if that isn't what you're looking for?

let me assure you that this was not a double blind study with placebos-- people were asked a question about the dress code ---thats it
as far as what cruise llines -- the op where the thread originated stated that rather the post the same question on each cruise lines board -it would be posted once and you could respond with your answer to the question regardless of cruise line ---so its an across the board question

But ... the study population was very small ... and we don't know what cruise lines they sail. Obviously, people who sail perhaps RCCL may feel differently about the subject than people who sail Cunard.

The reason I ask that question is that I can't believe individual cruise lines have not conducted their own marketing studies on that question, and if they have ... I'd love to know what the results were and what their study population numbers were. In the case of HAL, I can't believe that if they had asked these questions of their guests and came up with a whopping 50% saying that they wanted the dress codes enforced ... that the word wouldn't have gone out to all of the matri 'd staff in their fleet to begin strictly enforcing them. Businesses play to the needs of their customer base. HAL is very much a business ... and a profitable one, I am sure. There is no way they'd be looking the other way at dress code violations if they knew that the majority of their cruisers wanted dress codes enforced.

So, that's why I am asking those questions about the informal poll on CC.
