View Full Version : Why doesn't Princess "do" advertisments on TV?
Cruisinforever
April 15th, 2004, 02:36 PM
I've wondered this for a while now. Carnival certainly runs ads on television a lot, so why don't the honchos at Princess feel that advertising could get the product "out there" more? Do they feel that the Princess name alone is enough? They haven't advertised (in a sense) since "The Love Boat" was in prime time! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

At the station I use to take the train to work there is a Princess Billboard to look at and drool on.

"no man's land"
A little sexism here.
Does that mean there are only women.
And all the men left.

See both Princess and Celebrity ads on the tube, now that the Alaska season is almost upon us.

That is really weird. I am in the middle of the state of CA and the only ads we see are Celebrity and Royal Carribean. Mostly Royal Carribean. Never, never have seen a princess ad.

I am in South Carolina and the only ads we see on TV are Royal Carribean and Carnival. Have never seen a Celebrity or Princess ad except maybe in a magazine.

I don't see them either, Marilyn. It's an age-old debate ... broadcast vs. print advertising.
Broadcast can truly reach millions of people. But it can be very expensive, and the fact that some of us never see Princess TV ads reveals a truth: the advertiser can never know for sure who really sees their commercial. That's the time we go to the loo, or go to the 'fridge to get a treat.
Print, on the other hand, (as Derf pointed out) is there to be seen over and over again. That's the big selling point of outdoor advertising. People drive/walk by day after day and see your message.
Princess uses lots of newspaper and magazine advertising, and most every edition of these media are retained for a period of time and picked up by multiple people. The cost per thousand "views" becomes a more attractive number.
That's all Advertising 101 for today, class. Tomorrow we'll begin our chapter on cheese making.

I have never seen a Princess ad either. I have seen the Celebrity ad and I love it. The one where the woman and the man are talking about how they were treated....he says something about having been treated like a king and he thinks of his current life as just being a temporary exile. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Well, at least now I know I'm not the only one who's not seen a Princess ad. I see Celebrity ads, RCCL ads, and Carnival. I am going to have to be more observant and see if I'm missing something. I can't imagine that I'd notice those ads and totally miss Princess' ads, especially since I think my ears would perk up if I heard the words "Princess Cruise"!
I don't need a billboard, though, to have something to drool at. I just read these boards! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

BTW, he was great at our local dinner theatre

In Western PA, we are inundated with Royal Caribbean and Carnival commercials. I have seen a Princess commercial, but it is on very rare occasion. I have never seen a Celebrity commercial. We watch a lot of TV so I don't think they advertise here.

Another midwest person here and I only see RCCL commercials. I used to see Carnival but don't anymore. Once in awhile I will see the "Disney souvenior" commerical but it has been awhile since I have seen that one.

Here in NJ, I can pick up NY & PA TV stations.
Have only seen Carnival, RCCl & sometimes Celebrity commercials.
Haven't seen a Princess commercial in years. I think the slogan for those were, where you belong.

Also from the midwest and see plenty of Princess commercials. Seems like I see more RCI (which by the way I think are done very well) and Celebrity commercials in the past year. Less from Carnival and about the same from Disney. Don't think I've ever seen a HA or NCI commerical.

Way more more subdued than the RCCL and Carnival ads.

Now think about it... the last two Princess cruises I was on were sold out - in fact the last one was over booked and they offered people future Caribbean Princess sailings. The best advertising is word of mouth and repeat customers. Why spend all those expensive dollars for TV advertising when the ships are full without it? Keep up the good work Princess!
