The pier is Pier 35. on Embarcadero St. I am not sure of hotels near there. Maybe someone will know. When are you leaving in Oct. I am on the Sapphire Oct. 2 and there is a roll call started.

Near the port, the Holiday Inn Fisherman's Wharf (1300 Columbus Avenue, 415-771-9000) offers good bargains.

We are on Oct. 12. This should be a great cruise and we are really going to enjoy it. Thanks Derf for all the info. Somehow I knew that you would chime in. We followed you by a week on the Coral. Rick

Learjetjock,

We are on that cruise, too. We are probably going to stay in the fisherman's warf area.

We are looking forward to this cruise because for the first time in many, many cruises, I haven't been to any of the ports of call.

Hyatt at Fisherman's Wharf is pretty close, I think. (415) 563-1234. Holiday Inn is across the street from the Hyatt (415) 409-4600. I know there are some closer to the pier. I'll walk down there in the next few days and check.

Best Western (http://sfvisitor.travelhero.com/index.cfm/id/69411/aid/260/subRegionID/53/flagged/1/index.html) is close by. (415) 561-1100.

As for restaurants, you're in the heart of Fisherman's Wharf. Good restaurants are everywhere. North Beach and Chinatown are within walking distance.

I like the Sheraton Fisherman's Wharf the best for quality, value, and location as near the pier as you can get. (You'll still need a cab.)

Derf - Thanks for listing that cruise port hotels site. Great information.

Across from Pier 35 to the left, is a Houston's, about two blocks. Next door, to the right, is the huge Pier 39 complex, with multiple restaurants...perfect for before sailing.
Sailaway from SFO is awesome; make sure you're on deck as you pass Alcatraz and go under the Golden Gate Bridge.

My husband & I sailed out of San Francisco last month. Going under the Golden Gate Bridge was awesome!

We stayed at the Radisson at Fisherman's Warf. Excellent location! When they found out at check-in that we were leaving the next morning from Pier 35, they put us in a room overlooking the pier. What a sight to see our ship in all her glory from our hotel window the next morning. I thought this was really teriffic of Radisson to do, since we had gotten this hotel for only $64 on priceline! Same room would have been $159 if booked directly through Radisson.

Hope this helps,

Sue

Has SFO opened its new cruise terminal yet? When I embarked there 2 years ago on the OP, it was absolutely gruesome. Chaos outside, endlessly long lines inside as we stood on concrete in an abandoned, decrepit warehouse.

That said, once on board- wow!! Fabulous views of the city just get better as the ship makes a thrilling passage underneath the Golden Gate Bridge. Even crewmembers got all excited!

The new terminal probably won't be opened until 2008. Anyway that is the last I heard. I have never sailed out of San Francisco, will be going to Alaska next month really getting excited less than three weeks.

shuksan7 - It's still "chaos outside, endlessly long lines inside as you stand on concrete in an abandoned, decrepit warehouse." As we speak, they're still arguing about how and what to build. How unfortunate. How San Francisco.

Oh, but, it's not just "chaos outside, endlessly long lines inside as you stand on concrete in an abandoned, decrepit warehouse." It's also bitter cold. North Dakota is warmer in winter than that pier is in summer. Layer up!

Thanks for all your help. I have printed all the hotels you recommended and will be checking them out. However I would still like some restaurants. Thanks Rick

What kind of food do you like? Try Caesar's on Northpoint and Powell. Or lots of good Italian places in North Beach.

This is good info thank all of you for this. Does anyone know what the cab fare is from the airport to a downtown hotel location. I don't think I want to mess with BART because of the luggage but what other options are there?

I think I read on another post that it's about 40 bucks. Depending on the number in your party, you can try an Airport Shuttle. Email me if you have any questions: sfpd3000@yahoo.com
