View Full Version : The Official HMC Turquoise Cabana Thread

Ok, I figured somebody had to do it ;)

So it seems that many of us have booked the Turquoise Cabana at Half Moon Cay for upcoming cruises, as have so many CCers before us, and based on their excellent reviews I am 'dam' sure we're going to enjoy it!

HeatherinFlorida brought up the excellent point of leaving a little 'treasure' behind in the cabana for the next occupants - that would make a fun little game, yes? So, the question is...exactly what? A small 'guestbook' for fellow CCers to leave their greetings, a lucky casino chip or similar small item, or....?

Feel free to post the date you'll be occupying "our" lovely corner of paradise and if you have any ideas for our little secret 'treasure' :D

Silly me...forgot to post my own info (at least for those who have sigs turned off!)...

We'll be there on the December 10, 2006 sailing (calling in at HMC on December 16) with friends who we are cruising with.

Also thought I'd post a link to Ziggy's excellent photos of HMC and the cabanas, including our beloved Turquoise. You can find them here:

Yeah....we have the turquoise cabana for our 2/3 cruise. I think it would be fun to leave something. I'm not sure what. Maybe a little guest book for everyone to sign? But where could we hide it so it won't be thrown out?

Thanks SarahQ for starting the thread. I've been wrapped up trying to get something productive done today and not celebrate my cabana too much!!!

We are sailing 12/16 and enjoying our cabana on the 22nd of December.

I like the idea of a book but how to hide it and protect it from the weather . . . hmmm

Has anyone ever done a GEO Cache? It's similar but it's a treasure hunt using a GPS. When you find the treasure you leave something, take something and sign the register. Then you leave a note on a website to record your visit. We could do something similar with this thread and track the 'activity' with our 'treasure'. Even if it means that we note that we found the hidden 'treasure'.

Blessings!

I forgot to add....

Thanks to SarahQ for starting this thread!!!

And thanks to everyone who posted information and pictures concerning the cabanas. My gosh, I can't imagine taking a cruise without knowing about CC! If we did...we'd be lost or at least miss out on so many things!

Frogs...your idea sounds neat. I hadn't heard of it before, but it sure sounds like a good idea.

I'm going to live vicariously as all you guys enjoy "my" cabana;) . It might help when you post to put the actual day you'll be on Half Moon Cay ... not just when your cruise starts!

The air conditioner does project into the back of the cabana so on top of that is a possibility for a hiding place:) .

I think this is a fun idea! Hope it works out for you!!!

We're going to be there on Friday, Feb. 9th.

Heather...it looks like there is a path between the turquoise and blue cabanas that leads to the restrooms. Is this correct?

HeatherInFlorida
May 16th, 2006, 06:20 PM
We took the path straight up from our cabana. One of my pictures is taken from the path just above the cabana and not far from the rest rooms. We would just step off our steps, turn right, and go through a little opening in the dune. Then a right on the path and the restrooms are very close.

Sounds like fun! I booked the Turquoise for Oct 13th (last port on the Volendam Repositioning Canal Cruise). Didn't realize when I booked it this morning it was going to be the most popular one but guess we've all all been reading the same posts (Thanks Heather!) Checked the Cruise Ship Calendar and at this point looks like we may be the first HAL ship back there after "that other line" uses it for the summer. So if we come up with something I can try to get it started.

Thanks. There was a time when I wanted to know where the bar is located...now it's the restroom! lol :)

I found the picture you were talking about. From your pics (and they great-thanks for posting them), it looks like they put the clam shells not directly in front of the cabana, so you'll have a bit of a walkway to the ocean. At least that's what it looks like to me.

Thought I'd join in... We had Turquoise Cabana in July--LOVED it! It's also a short walk to the BQ at lunch. HMC is the most beautiful spot! Loacation of the turquoise cabana is great. Enjoy! I love the idea of leaving little treasures behind:)

Did the cabana guy bring your BBQ lunch to the cabana, or did you have to go get it yourself? I remember reading on a thread where the CB did this, but on another thread it said this had been discontinued, and the CB only went for drinks.

We're booked in the turquoise for Jan 19, 2007 (Zuiderdam Jan 13 sailing).
For the first time, we're cruising with friends and they've never been on HAL or to HMC. Methinks they're gonna have a good time. (And we have suites 5186 and 5187 booked too).

Some one asked about BBQ--you must go get it unless you have a butler. I understand the cabana boys used to bring luch, but can no longer do that. The Turquoise cabana is a very short walk to BBQ area.
I'm so envious of all of you heading to HMC! Lucky you! It's such a beatifil place. I know you'll love HMC and OUR cabana!:)

Wow...glad to see our numbers are growing.

My computer is...uh...toast at the moment, so I haven't been online in a while, but wanted to check in with all our fellow TCers :) Still trying to think of something we could 'pass along' or hide for future cruisers.

Dreaming of sitting in our cabana looking out at that gorgeous beach is what's getting me through these days...*sigh* can't December come any faster? ;)

Here I am the vicarious lurker on your turquoise cabana thread!!! I just think this is such a fun idea and I hope you can work something out. You've got a lot so far!!!

Just want to mention that there's no "behind" the A/C. Here's the link to a pic of the inside of the cabana: Donna, Ray, Don and Me! picture - Webshots (http://community.webshots.com/photo/219103614/1219108677061635310BJDapZ).

You'll see the A/C is almost flush with the wall. What you might be able to do is the first guy in your chain of people could rig something just above the door inside those white cupboards you see under the A/C ... maybe a little hook? You could hang something there.

Just an idea!!!:)

Frogs - thanks so much for keeping up the list :D

pennywise - I think a keychain is a great idea (or some kind of small trinket from your hometown). Maybe instead of the small 'guestbook' idea, we could do something like have everyone leave a postcard from their hometown with a message to future cabana-dwellers...we'd have to find a pretty good hiding place, but it might work.

I was just thinking I haven't heard a lot of 'reviews' about the cabanas lately, and there won't be any again for a while (at least on the HAL boards). I'm sure they are as terrific as ever though!

Hi Kim,
Just having fun with my new hi-speed vs dial-up and decided to check in on CC....and found this board. We had that cabana this year in February. Then I read your signature and had to do some homework. We both joined CC in 2002....but I'm not sure when I started using "Blessings." I think yours is the only one I've seen. I like "Blessings" so much. It converys for me, a personal way of saying to all I write....."I share your adventure and wish all good things for you no matter where or if our paths may cross."

I arranged for the cabana after reading about it on CC. There were five, all family, and it was a great way to meet and relax between excursions. I wasn't impressed with staffing...actually two ??pursers? in white came by and we asked for more chips and found everything else by just checking around. There didn't seem to be anyone assigned to check on the cabanas as such.

One funny thing, some guy from the clamshell in front of us, just walked up the steps and plopped himself on one of the lounge chairs. Only my husband and I were there so we talked for a while then I went off to the "necessary" (yes, it is convenient) and we got ready to leave shortly after that. I don't think he had a clue.

I think if someone arriving on the earliest date used a cup screw, one could attach it to the inside of the cabinet. Somehow a sign in English and Spanish mich be added to indicate that it is for------------arriving on-----------. Of course it has to be in plastic or such for protection. It's a thought. We would have enjoyed doing something like that.

I hope you all have a great time.

Blessings,

Gail

You can add my family to the list for November 6th...

Question for those that have enjoyed the cabana's in the past --- are "interlopers" a big problem for the turquoise cabanas? I was reading a thread on the Westerdam boards and one person wrote about 15 incidents during their stay on HMC when people just walked up to "use" equipment or shower in the cabana. Is this problem really that wide spread?

HeatherInFlorida
July 10th, 2006, 04:50 PM
Jmastron, we didn't even have one uninvited visitor. And I can't begin to guess why the turquoise would be any more likely to have interlopers than any other color. They all run along the beach in close proximity.

I'll be honest, if anyone had come up and sat themselves down in ours I would have politely explained that we had rented it. The first time I was at HMC I had no idea what they were or how people got them so it may be that some people thing it's "open sitting":D .

I would not hesitate to explain to someone that they're not! The thread I read where people seemed to drop by, I don't think anyone explained the situation to them.

Heather,
Thanks. I was hoping that would be the case. The cabana is a splurge for us, and I really am looking forward to it. It would really ruin the day if I encounter rude people. Definitely understand innocent misconception and can politely explain the situation. I guess the notion that the turquois would be more subject to uninvited guests would be because of its location .. close to restrooms and bbq area. Having never been there before, I am truly relying on the wealth of information I am gathering from this website. Thanks for your feedback. It was very much appreciated.

Please add Duckman715 (aka Bill & Sandy) to the Royal and Ancient Order of Inhabitants of Ye Mystic Turquoise Cabana. We have it booked for January 5, 2007.
The guestbook is a great idea by the way. I'm sure HAL would not mind if we left one there for members of this (not so) secret society to record their deeds of glory and/or rum whilst in attendance.

I love the "name". I can definitely see a plaque hanging outside the Cabana for the Royal and Ancient Order... A book sounds like a great idea.

For those who follow us (Duckman715 on 1/5) I will leave a small - airline size - bottle of rum, or two. Jodster, I believe that is you. If someone who is using the cabana prior to 1/5 could indicate on this thread where a good place to leave this elixir might be, I (and Jodster too I imagine) would be grateful. I hear there be pirates in those waters who might be tempted to swill another's grog if'n it not be properly secured.

LOL @ Ziggy - I love that idea...how very "Pirates of the Caribbean" ;)

It sounds like we're all in agreement that some little guestbook that everyone could leave a note in would be a great idea, and maybe some other little trinket? Maybe the best plan is to just let everyone decide on some small item - maybe something from their hometown or state.

Now, the question is - do we agree to leave the item in a particular place, or do we 'hide' it and make searching for it part of the fun?

When we were in the pink cabana in January 06, they were constructing a new cabana right next to us. Facing the water it was to our left.

I wonder if that is the new Peach cabana?

Karen, it's not that the turquoise is any better than others (althought it is pretty close to the food an the rest rooms;) ). The only reason this thread got started was that on a thread awhile back lots of people happened to pop up who had booked the turquoise cabana. I said they should start a thread about it and get some sort of chain going.

And so this thread was born:) . So there could really be a thread about any color cabana. The Turquoise just happens to be near and dear to those of us (like Ziggy) who have rented it before.

Looking for my Cabana Neighbor. We have the Blue Cabana (next door) for the DEC 17 2006 Westerdam sailing. We snagged your cabana early. Last year we had the light blue. My husband, 15 year old son, and myself are from Ocala, FL. My parents (79 and 80 years old) are joining us again this year. Last year we were on the Westerdam and went on the cruise that took us East. This year we are going West. We were on Half Moon Cay last year on Christmas Day and it rained most of the day.

If there is a hammock between us we can take turns.:) We look forward to meeting you!

Okay, a bottle of Virgin Islands Rum is now buried (and thus becomes "treasure") alongside our favorite cabana. We had a great day at HMC; flat seas, crystal clear waters and our favorite libations, too. Although the Westerdam was there too, we had a blast!
I hope whoever finds this "booty" will replace it with something else for future sailors to find. Happy cruising!!!

I promise if no one is in the cabana when I walk by on December 11th, I won't dig anything up!!! We're alone at HMC on the Prinsendam that day and I have no idea if anyone has booked it. If they have, they've not visited our Roll Call.

Let's hope Jes' treasure stays there until next Monday when Djaller visits!

Y'all can count me in on this deal! I don't often post but I read this board every day. My mom, sister and I will be visiting the turquoise cabana (for which we've also gotten the butler package!!) on Jan. 3. We are sooooo excited-- it's the first cruise for any of us!

I'll look forward to the replies-- this is such a fun thread!

Tis grog & dubloons and perhaps a few other things of value as well, we'll be stashing fer them what comes after our visit Jan 5. Right now I am in Brazil and my mom and her husband are in Ukraine. I live in Ohio and they live in Ontario, Canada (close to Barrie). Our treasure should include something from our current travels and something from our home regions - could be interesting! ;)

Just back from Half Moon Cay. I guess I'm a bit "thick" but I was under the impression there were four support posts and I was to dig just inside the rear post on the left (as you are facing the cabana). Well, there are a lot more than 4 support posts. In fact, there are four across the front and at least 3 going from front to back (on each side). The rear support, really doesn't look like a support as it looks like its on a slab (as you dig, however, there really is a support there). And you can't get to the inside of the rear support (we will add pictures so everyone sees what we mean).

I dug everywhere I could imagine, and found nothing. However, we did bury our "treasure" just behind the left rear corner of the cabana. I hope whoever finds it, enjoys it. Its a little "taste" of our favorite past-time.

Ned,

From what we were told (we befriended a former "executive" of HAL on our cruise), HAL owns this island, so no other cruise lines use it. They paid $2 Mil for it and added about another $3 Mil in improvements. It is really nice...not like the other private islands we've been to.

LonActually when HAL pulls their ships out of the Caribbean for the summer, Carnival stops at HMC, they rent it to their sister division, and occasionally a few other lines have had special permission to stop there but that is rare!

Hey all,

We were at HMC on Dec 16 and dug around the back 40 of the cabana and came up empty...although we may have missed a spot or two.

We actually brought our little treasure and ended up forgetting it onboard - doh!!! My DH said he would go back and fetch it but the 'Drunken Whale' did its job and none of us were in any shape to go back and get it ;)

So, in theory, lggfly's treasure may still be there and we just missed it! Hopefully it'll get found :) Or, we aren't being secretive enough and our treasures are being pinched by pirates ;)

I suspect we aren't being secretive enough. My treasure was buried almost right up against the left (as you are facing the cabana) corner (just behind). It wasn't buried that deep, so if you dug there, you'd find it. Too bad.

We didn't get to actually walk by the turquoise cabana (like I promised) when we were there on December 11th, but I did zoom in for a picture as best I could! Didn't look to me like anyone was using it that day.

We were there alone on the Prinsendam (less than 800 passengers) and the Tour Desk told us only 5 were rented! They didn't even set up chaises that far down the beach.

I think it's really sad if people lurk on this thread and take advantage of the good nature of a few people trying to create a chain of gifts. Doesn't say anything good ... that's for sure!

Maybe if you keep your giveaways to something less inviting ... like a "message in a bottle":D

How did you find this info out about visiting HMC on a different day?

We're on the Zuiderdam, and are scheduled to be there on Friday, the 9th. I hope since this is the week after you sail, they don't change our day. However, I am giving some thought to moving to another cabana, one that is a bit down the beach (and away from the crowds).

If I do this, I'll make sure and let Ziggy know so she can take me off the list.

Hello Twinkletoes:

We booked this cruise just under a year ago because it stopped at HMC on the way to San Diego thru the Panama Canal...have previously been to HMC last Feb 2006 and loved those cabanas and service and the beach and the water, well you get the picture...so were thrilled that we would be able to go back again so soon....we had the yellow cabana...way down the beach away from action. although we were the only ship there Westerdam. So we booked the Turquoise cabana based on this thread for Feb 2 and began the long countdown to Feb 2007.
Anyway, sometime in the summer of 2006 I noticed on the HAL website that the HMC date had been removed and replaced with Grand Turk....called my TA to confirm and yes HAL had changed the itinerary and offered no explanation as to why......but needless to say we were very, very disappointed that we would NOT be going to HMC this time around.
So no buried treasure for us but to all the rest of you bounty hunters have a great time on that little piece of paradise
Happy diggin and wiggle your toes in that cake flour sand Twinkletoes:) Have a great time... and smooth sailing!!!

Well, you might know after planning this trip almost a year in advance, booking the famed Turquoise Cabana just about the day they released them and springing for the butler package, I was sick as a dog and didn't even set foot on HMC.

But the good news is that our friends WERE able to go over, armed with a bottle of wine that they had bottled and a poem warning of serious consequences if you should take the booty without leaving something in return. When they arrived at the cabana, first thing they started looking for the booty. They found it!!!! Some small bottles of rum and a bottle of bourbon. Who left that for us?

When my friend started trying to bury her loot, the butler volunteered to do it for her. I've got the photo but it says the file size is too large.

Whoever finds ours, please let us know.

Shonuff - The treasure was buried by your friendly Virginia pirate - Duckman715 & his hearty band of brigands. The bourbon was a special treasure as it was the "Virginia Gentleman" brand. We were on shore at HMC 1/5/07. So very glad to hear the treasure was found by a member of the crew of "Ye Mystic Order...", especially after all the rumors of pirates making off with what's really ours.
Hope the prize was properly divided amongst the crew and enjoyed by all

I am so sorry that I haven't posted since we left for our cruise in December. Got back to reality and didn't get back much on Cruise Critic like I did when preparing for the cruise.

First - We splurged and added the butler perk as a Christmas gift for my parents. We were disappointed right at the beginning. We were told to wait in our cabin and the butler would pick us up a the cabin. The paper work even said that we MUST wait in the cabin or our service would ultimately delayed at the caban if we didn't wait for them. Well . . . The butler NEVER met us at our cabin therefore we got to the island later than we wanted. We made SEVERAL phone calls to the front desk and no one could help us and knew nothing about what we were talking about. There was NO ONE from the excursion desk on board so no one to help us. Finally our room steward Andre' got someone to come and take us down to the tender only to leave us to our own accord with no instruction - we were supposed to get an escort all the way according to what I had read. When we did get to the island the staff in the information booth weren't interested in helping us with getting to the cabana. They just pointed and were unclear about what we were to be doing. We went on and found the cabana and found our butlers waiting for us there. This was about 10:00 a.m. Honestly - we never inquired with the butler. We were determined to enjoy the rest of the day and let it go.

Once we were there we had a WONDERFUL time. It was fun watching people and nice that we didn't have to worry about our space and our stuff if we left the cabana. The food was good but not fabulous - except for the lobster sandwiches - they were fabulous. We has two butlers watching over us. One main butler and another in training. They did get us everything we asked for and were very helpful and delightful. We eventually got one of the last tenders to the ship and blessed to have been able to enjoy the cabana and in the end the butler service.

Would I use the butler service again, probably not, but who knows what I would do if given the opportunity again . . . Would I do the cabana again? You bet!!!!! It was the best thing we did besides the Thermal Suite and Hydro Pool week pass on the ship.

Now about the 'treasure' . . . we looked and looked for the treasure and found nothing. We didn't leave ours since it appears that they were being picked up by someone else. I am so sorry but we felt that our fun had been taken away and didn't want to contribute to the pirates personal bounty. This was such a great idea and a big disappointment for the four of us.

If I think of anything else I will post and if anyone has any questions please ask and I'll do my best to answer.

Blessings to all of you!

Kim & Randy

We didn't find shonuf's booty, but we may have missed it. Hubby dug around, but didn't find anything. We left ours...it's buried about where the butler's (in shnouf's picture) left foot is. It's at the side of the post (I think it was the third post) where the cabana begins, and the decking ends.

Maybe the next person will find both! :)

You'll have to look for ours and shonuf's...I haven't read anywhere where either have been found. I hope you find them both!!! :)

Have a great cruise! :)

I printed out the picture and the description of where the booty is buried. There are 6 of us, so one of us is sure to find something, unless the butler went back and got it...

Shonuf,
In looking at the picture, it looks as tho you buried your booty about a foot or so from where the butler's left foot is - does that sound pretty close?

Hopefully anyone visiting HMC before us isn't reading this and digging up the stuff.. and leaving nothing...:(

I hope they leave it alone...someone has been stealing the treasure.

Ours is just in front of the post. What we left, we put in a small (I think it was a quart baggie) ziplock baggie. :)

Unfortunately, you know as much as I do about where it is. The day we were at HMC, I was in the infirmary for the second time and couldn't even go ashore. Our friends who had booked the cabana with us, had it all to themselves, butler and all. They had also brought the wine from Dallas, and the husband wrote the poem to go along with it.

Good luck, hope you find it. I'm afraid there are lurkers out there who've been plundering.

I'll do my best to find it. I think I'll pack a shovel in my luggage so DH can dig while I watch :p

make sure you're drinking a pina colada or something yummy, while he's digging! :) I don't think hubby dug very far down in the sand....maybe 6 inches or so. It looked like the sand was pretty soft.

I was there last Monday. We dug and dug but found nothing. That did not ruin a perfect day. What a treat to be in the cool cabana when it was so hot on the beach. I ordered a massage in the cabana as well. What a great day!

sheshefran,
Sorry you didn't find the prize. but I have to ask - did you leave one for us to look for? I don't want to dig a moat around the cabana if I don't have to..:D

TerriRN is listed after we pay a visit.....

TerriRN are you still going?

Hmmmmm...It seems like someone has been taking our treasures. That's too bad. I thought about that, but I hoped people would leave these things alone.

But it sounds like you have a wonderful day!!! A massage...ahh... :)

Well, now I'm wondering if we should bury something or not .... I hate for others to get it :(

I thought the same thing, which is why I didn't spend much money. I ended up buying a small BBQ cookbook, ref. magnets, a couple of post cards, and something with a tornado in it (can't remember what). I think all the items came to $15.

I don't know what to tell you...it just doesn't sound like it will be around for the next person. It's really too bad someone is pilfering our treasures. :(

:D We found the booty! Actually, Greg found it. He dig around and came up with your stuff, Twinkletoes! He also found a very big bottle of Bacardi rum that was half gone. He had a shot and said it was great..;) When we left HMC he buried the big bottle again in the same place along with a couple of minis from us with a note. We put your stuff back Twinkle so the next person could enjoy the postcards.

Who left the big bottle? We were kind of worried that it was open but Greg ain't dead!

Good luck to the next person!

That's great that the things were still there! Was it shonuf who left the rum? How funny that people have been drinking from the bottle!!! :)

Nope, we (that is Ann and Jason) left a bottle of white wine with a poem wrapped around it. I'm glad someone found something but do think it's funny that the bottle was pre-opened. Quality control?

Hmmm...I wonder who left it if you didn't? It is a hoot that someone has been taking a nip or two from the bottle. :)
