View Full Version : smoking smell in rooms?

I am not wanting to get flamed so I am reluctant to post this. However, I really want to know the answer to the question so I am asking.
I am not a smoker. I am not meaning this thread to come across as offensive to anyone that is a smoker. I am not one and I am highly allergic to several things. Cigarette smoke really sets my allergies off. This upcoming cruise (Westerdam June 4) is only my second cruise. My first cruise was a Disney cruise. I don't know if they have nonsmoking rooms or not. I cannot remember. I do know that I always request nonsmoking in hotels and with TA. My TA didn't tell me that HAL doesn't have nonsmoking rooms. I just assumed that my room would be nonsmoking. I do remember not having the cigarette smell in my room on DCL. I was reading through my "Know Before You Go" book yesterday and found the place that tells me that HAL does NOT have nonsmoking rooms. I cannot understand the reasoning behind this one. I am now concerned that I will have the smell of cigarettes in my room. I know that all of you frequent HAL cruises so please let me know if this will be the case.
Again, I am not meaning to offend smokers at all. I just cannot handle the smell because of my allergies.

I don't find your post offending at all, your asking a question and a legitimate one. I am a smoker, I smoke in only designated areas of the ship. My sister is not a smoker and has allergies as you do. She has been on a few HAL cruises and has never complained of any smoke smells. If anyone was to complain about smoke smell in the cabin, it would be my sister. HAL and as I hear it, other cruise lines as well, do a wonderful job with getting the smoke smell out of the cabins. I don't think you will have a problem. Enjoy your cruise.

Both of us also have problems with smoke. But so far we have found that the vabin stewards do an excellent job of getting rid of cigarette smoke in the cabins. When you get to your cabin, should you smell any left over smoke, get hold of your cabin steward. They have some kind of a special spray that they use in the cabins just for this purpose.

I dislike the smell of smoking, but have never had any hint in my stateroom and, in fact, the only place on the ship that "smells" is the area around the casino. The smell there is rather strong and to me unpleasant, even when the casino is closed. You can smell it just walking nearby. Otherwise, no problem.

I agree with Mickey. I have never had the smell of smoke in my cabin on a HAL ship. The place it is unavoidable is the casino. The place it is sometimes is the outside decks near the few ashtrays.

We also have never smelled smoke in any cabin we've had. The room stewards do a great job of cleaning/deodorizing if a smoker has been in there.

Unlike many hotel rooms we've been in, we've never smelled smoke in any HAL cabin during our numerous cruises.
Sometimes we've smelled smoke on the verandah, but it hasn't been terrible. Once we were next to a cigar smoker who was very considerate and asked if the smoke was bothering us on our verandah.
I understand that HAL can provide a device if you do detect that awful stale smoke smell in your cabin. We've never had the need to request it.
HAL crusiers generally tend to be very considerate. Also, there seems to be fewer smokers these days - for whatever reason.

I too am very sensitive to smoke. On one cruise our cabin had a very pronounced smoke odor. As I have done in hotels, I requested an "ozone generator" (I think that is what they call it). It is about the size of a small heater and neutralizes the smell. After a day or so the cabin seemed fine so we asked that they remove the machine. Within an hour the odor was back so we got the machine back and ran it for the entire cruise. Worked fine.

We too kept one of those machines in our cabin for our whole 10 day cruise on the Volendam. It was fine for the cabin, but the smell remained in the bathroom. There had to have been very heavy smokers, in there, before we boarded!

We boarded the Zaandam in Florida and when we got to the cabin the odor of smoke was so bad my wife who is very alergic had a bad reaction. We were told that they could clean the room but it was so bad and since she can get very sick we told them that unless we could get another cabin we would leave the ship. Luckily there had been a last minute cancelation and we got another cabin. Several days later I went to the original cabin to where some people had been upgraded. The odor was still bad even though the cleaning had been performed.

Wow, I hate to hear that. We'll be on the Zaandam July 28th, and I'm terribly allergic to smoke (perfume as well) and wouldn't have the option of leaving the ship as our cruise is work-related. In seven cruises (five on HAL, two on Princess) we've never had any trouble with our staterooms smelling of smoke. Either we've been very lucky or they do a magnificent job of cleaning. I guess I'll just cross my fingers and pray that our 'luck' continues.

Of the 18 cruises I have been on, I have never smelled smoke in the cabins.

The only problem we have had in the suite area is people leaving their doors open while having a party (maybe 8 or 10 people) and heavy smoking going on. The smoke then really fills the hall around the open door. We have never had a smoke smell in any cabin or any suite.

We've not had a problem with smoke smell in our cabin. However, on our last cruise, we had neighbors who smoked heavily. We never actually saw them and they were right next door to us, but you could smell the odor of cigarettes in the hallway, when we came and went out of the cabin. We never noticed it in our own cabin, which made me very happy. I did wonder what would happen if they fell asleep smoking, after having a few drinks. Luckily, everything worked out.

Same here--never had a smoke smell in a cabin or suite. (I doubt I could handle room with smoke smell.) We also have smelled the smoke on a veranda from neighbors.

My wife and I were on a HAL Mexico cruise in October (Oosterdam). Our cabin smelled of smoke. Cabin steward install a small Ionic air cleaning device (similar to Ionic Breeze). With-in hours the we had absolutely no odor. We keeped the air cleaner in our room for the length of the cruise.
Ask Cabin Steward for Ionic Air cleaner - has a small fan inside - plugs in to AC outlet.

We had some smoke smell on our last cruise on the Ryndam . It was just after a repositioning cruise .(probably the same smokers in the room for 2-3 weeks) It was a suite so we were able to get lots of fresh air in but you would still get that aroma occasionally. (I am also very sensitive tho not allergic)

Out of the 9 cruises we had on HAL, only once did we get a cabin that really stunk of smoke. We mentioned it to the desk, the Head Housekeeper came and made the cabin steward clean the room. The removed our bedspread and replaced it with a brand new on and took away the drapes and replaced them the next day with cleaned drapes.
It was much better then but not perfect. I do believe that it was previously occupied by European people as their cigarettes, the types made in Turkey, really stink much more than the North American cigarettes.
When in the next port, we purchased Febreze and that helped too.
We took advantage of another week on board and had to move cabins and the new cabin smelled perfectly clean. I doubt anyone had ever smoked in it.
I guess it is the luck of the draw. It does pay to complain though as it did improve the situation greatly.
