I've read other posts about those extreme aft, facting the wake, balcony cabins being larger, but they said decks 5,6,7. What about on deck 4? Is it not also larger?

Is there any overhead cover on those balconies on deck 4, specifically 4183 on Z. or a sister ship. Real important in my decision making. i need shade.

Anyone ever have 3 in the cabin?

There is one available on my sailing coming up and want to figure if it's worth it to upgrade.
Thanks,

We were in 5187 on the Westerdam which is the same as the Zuiderdam as far as the aft end of the ship goes.

There is a small 2-foot overhang just as you leave the stateroom (which, by the way is SMALLER than the midship suites) and then the huge aft balcony.

If you have an outside stateroom on either the port or starboard side, there is a wraparound portion that is also shaded most of the day. We found that this tended to be not shaded in the late afternoon.

We do not like to be in the sun either and usually could find a shaded spot on the balcony except for the late afternoon (but it all depends on which direction the ship is going).

5187 is bigger than the deck four suites by about 2 feet. It is also bigger than the deck 6, 7 and 8 suites.

We were on the Noordam when it came to Boston. The aft balconies are smaller than the Westerdam and Zuiderdam, but they have more shade because the overhang is four feet instead of two.

Thanks, Charliesmom

How much furniture does the balcony hold? Is there such a thing as a recliner on HAL? I saw the photo of the wicker chair and ottoman. Can you give me a guess as to the size of the balcony

Yep CharliesMom is right on. We had cabin # 5187 on the Ms. Westerdam.
The deck is huge; you could put at least six chaise lounges and a table with four chairs with room to walk around. You will have shade most of the time on the "skinny" side of your deck, it is 100% covered by the deck above.

The balcony on deck four appeared to be larger.

As far as the cabin size, it's not that much larger than an SS.

Three in this cabin? In my opinion NOT. But that's me. You will have no privacy. The sofa bed when opened would probably (not positive never opened it) leave only 18 inches between it and the bed, then you would have to put the coffee table somewhere, on the deck? No... that's my favorite place to dance!

Some of the HAL literature is misprinted. Cabin 4183 on the Zuiderdam does not sleep three. That little circle should not be there. Please contact HAL to verify this.

There is a great photo of the back of the Zuiderdam showing the size of the verandahs and also how they are terraced. (On the Navigation Deck, the stern verandahs are completely private and shaded)
I'm writing thru Explorer so I can't paste a link, but if you write me at MOJITOMANIAC at AOL I will gladly send it to you. :)

I can't take credit for this photo as I found it elsewhere on cruisecritic.com, but it should help you out.
