We would love to cruise on the Golden Princess on Jan.2/05 (Stateroom C522), Southern Caribbean. However, I was informed by Princess that smoking is allowed in staterooms. We are non-smokers and my son has an allergy and suffers greatly when he smells any smoke. We have always cruised with Disney (where smoking in staterooms is not allowed) but we would like to experience other cruise lines. My question - has anybody experienced a lingering smoke odour from previous smoking guests in the Golden Princess staterooms? Thank you kindly for your response.

16 cruises, 4 different cruise lines, outside cabins and balcony cabins, never noticed lingering smoke odor. They are pretty good at removing any evidence of smoke.

I say the same thing as the above two posts. I have never smelled any cigarette smoke in six cruises in the cabin.

I have been on 5 cruises and have never smelled lingering smoke in the staterooms. Of course, there wouldn't be any lingering smell on the Carnvial Paradise as when we were on it, it was a non-smoking ship.

Voyager of the Seas - 05/04
Tahitian Princess - 10/03 (Our Honeymoon)
Carnival Paradise - 08/02

We were moved to a new cabin on the second day of our cruise recently. The cabin supervisor took us to the new cabin for our approval. Someone had been smoking in the new cabin just a few minutes before we entered. You could practically see the smoke! (we thought perhaps it was our cabin steward) He instructed someone to clean the cabin. We moved in about 2 hours later and never smelled any smoke that day or any other day. I don't think you will have a problem. Make sure your travel agent lets Princess know your son is allergic to smoke. Princess is #1 in customer service in my book.

I wonder how Disney polices smoking in the staterooms??

Anyway, I've never smelled smoke in any Princess staterooms either. I don't think you have a worry.

Many cruises on several lines. One time (even tho it had been cleaned) when we got to our cabin, it still smelled of smoke. Alerted our steward and went off to lunch. Got back to unpack and it was gone. This was either RCL or Celebrity, not Princess.

I just back from the Caribbean Princess. Their smoking policy is more liberal than the RCI cruises I have been on. In fact there are ashtrays at every elevator. I would worry more about the common areas than your room. There are designated areas but not everybody adheres to them. People were smoking outside of the dinning room.

Until 4/3 Caribbean Princess

We're also pretty strong non-smokers and have never noticed it on any of our cruises. Recently had a problem at a hotel (a nonsmoking one in fact) where the entry in our room just reeked of smoke. They sent someone up with a "room oxidizer" (or some type name like that) that basically removes all the air from the room, then opened the windows and let fresh air in. We had to leave the room for an hour while they removed the air. But when we returned, you couldn't smell smoke at all. I've read on these boards that most cruise lines have these on the ships (the one they used wasn't larger than say a foot in size). So if you noticed a smoky smell, I'm sure if you notified your steward they could take care of it promptly.

I am VERY sensitive to smoke. I agree with the other posters. I have never smelled smoke IN the cabin...Unless you have a balcony and open your door. Smokers, both cigarette and cigar, are allowed to smoke on balconies...and they do!!!!
Avoid walking through the casino (you even need to walk through the casino to get to the theater on some ships!)There are some public areas where smoking is allowed and you may encounter smoke.I'd love to see all ships non smoking..but that's Not going to happen anytime soon.Best of luck and enjoy the cruise! I would love to know what the cruise lines use to get rid of cigarette smoke so quickly. When we first arrived in our cabin we knew that the previous person had been smoking in it (very very faint odour) but by the time we came back from exploring the ship the odour had gone.

Small tip that Julie used to use (when I smoked) - not cruise related ... just general. An ioniser will get rid of most of the smell if left on overnight.

I never smelled smoke in a cabin....but in the hallways while cruising- well THATS another story. When people smoke in their cabins it permeates the whole hallway. Yuck.

Thank you all very much for your positive responses. Accordingly, we made our decision to take the cruise on the Golden Princess next January. Now we just have to wait 8 months.....

I'm very allergic to smoke and have never smelled any in our room. In the Wheelhouse bar one side is for smokers and the other non-smokers, as are some other public areas on Princess ships, and it is amazing that you don't even smell the smoke in a small area like that. If you read where the public smoking areas are, they are posted in the patter, and avoid these areas, which are usually one side, I'm sure your son will do fine.
