Paulmj - thank you for posting the links. We are going in Sept. and we were considering the Amalfi Coast Drive, Positano & Ravello and your photos have made it a definite to do.
Did you happen to take any of the ship's excursions or were they all booked on your own? If they were ship's we would be interested in which ones you took and any comments. Thanks
We'd also be most interested in comments from any who have gone with Princess for their tours. Most of the reviews and comments I find for the Med. have to do with who to hire and what they did on those tours. I realize those who book on their own save a lot of money and see exactly what they want without having to go in large groups but there are many of us who choose to stay with Princess tours and I'm sure they also would like to hear from you. Maybe a new topic "Princess tours in the Med" would be of interest. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

BJS, thanks for your comments.
I don't know how long messages are archived around here. Prior to last summer, there were endless discussions about the pros & cons of private tours, ship's shore excursions, etc. Many of these may be found also in the "Europe" destination category of CC.
We were a group of 6 adults, and made prior arrangements with private tour operators in Naples, Athens and Monaco. These people (among others) were highly recommended by other participants on the CC boards who had used them in the past.
When we came back, I gave details and contact information for the people we used, since we were very satisfied with all of them.
People approach these shore excursions in different ways. Some want to save money as a primary goal. Some want to cram as much as they can into the 6-8 hours of touring they have allowed for them, and probably end up digesting very little. Some want to take trains and do it themselves. Some want the absolute hand-holding of a ship's shore excursion.
There are many ways to cut this cake, and if you can locate some of these prior message threads, it can make for a lot of reading. The one constant in all of this is that nobody seems to feel there is a single "right" way to do it. I guess this shouldn't be surprising.
