View Full Version : Poll, do you view signatures?

Just wondering what other people do. Personally, I don't care to view signatures, even though I do have one.

I rarely read them - some of them are very long.

I have a fast (cable) internet connection. But I turned them off a few months ago when this site was experiencing very sluggish response time. It sped things up then and I got used to the uncluttered look.

No, I don't anymore. Turned them off a long time ago when so many became unreasonable in length. The board loads faster and is so much easier to read without so many 'past cruises, future cruises, favorite cruises, glitter sigs, countdown clocks, pictures, logos', etc., most of which is of interest only to the poster her/himself.

I don't read the lists of cruises.....past or future. Neither short lists nor very lengthy lists.
I sometimes look at cute/unusual/fun images but the overlarge displays that go on for many inches, I never look at. I scroll past them as fast as possible.

I don't mind a short sig (next cruise, etc), but when people started listing their life history, that was it; I turned the option off. I just have mail info in mine.

I did not answer the poll because my response is not a choice. I can only see the signatures when I am not logged in -- I do not know why, nor have I particularly looked around to see if it is a preference that I can change. I would, however, be curious to know if it is a changeable preference.
I also cannot add icons to my text at any place, only at the top by the title -- again, I do not know if it is a preference, or if it has to do with my browser, or what.
At the present time I am using Safari on an anitquated old iMac, as my eleven month old power book that has always been a bit spooky went into "hard drive failure" a few days ago and is currently in intensive care getting a hard drive transplant.
I would be interested in knowing and trying some new things once my ailing computer has received its new brain.

To some degree, I think the signatures, tag lines and upcoming cruise graphics help posters to get to know one another. And, they can provide some perspective on the advice offered. For example, some signatures tell you that the poster has significant cruising experience which, for me, adds authenticity and weight to their comments or advice. I like the links to reviews and photos. Some folks have wonderful photo albums!
On the other hand, I have seen some upcoming cruise graphics (not on HAL board) that have a very distracting flashing neon quality which I don’t care for. Some of the very large graphics and glitter signatures seem a little overdone.
I have DSL, and rarely experience slow loading, so I probably wouldn’t turn off the signatures. But – I am a newbie – that opinion could change. :)

My option wasn't listed---it's "no, because I simply don't like them".
When I read CC without signing on I see all that I'm "missing". Then I promptly sign on.

If you are not logged in, CC doesn't know who you are, so the display is the board "default" display, which is "show signatures". After you log in, the settings you have chosen in "user CP" determine how the pages display. You have the "show signatures" option turned off if the signatures do not display after you log in.
Down below the box where you type your responses is a section labeled "additional Options" ( you might have to scroll down to see it. There is a box there "disable smilies in text" that is probably checked and is keeping the smilies from showing in your posts.

arzz, to change the font style/size/color in any given post you have to do it each time. (that is unless I totally missed something over the last two years.)
There's a testing board on CC where you can practice all sorts of tricks.
But, hey! Isn't it good to know that you're not insufferable! :D

I am going to have to go to the testing board -- when I select the font, color, etc, it displays text that indicates that I have done so, but does not change the text in any way. Back to the drawing board.

I find them helpful for getting to know people. They also add some personality and color to the board. Avatars do that too, but there's only so much that can be done with an avatar, and sometimes what one puts in a signature can be helpful in other ways (like count-down clocks to cruises ... one's own or someone else's). I don't normally bother reading a signature every time I read someone's post, but if it's someone new and they have a signature I do note it and what it says about them.
Mine is a simple one ... I give a link to my website where my photos can be found. I give a notice to my upcoming cruises (no clocks anymore) and a banner for the Spamdam cruise. That's about it (right now).

I like seeing them - as others have written, it lets us "get to know each other." Also, it gives us our "cruise cred." After reading someone's posts for a few times, I do start to scroll thru them. But someone new, yes, I most likely will pause to look at their history.
When folks start to have 20, 30, 40, etc. cruises, it's really nice when they group them by some type of category such as cruiseline or destination. Thank you.
The very large glitter names get to be a bit much & if several cruises are booked with a countdown clock for each, that does take up a significant amount of space. The additional, non-cruise graphics are annoying as they too take up space.
I didn't know there was an option to not view sigs. I've often wondered about that since at times posters have asked questions of each other regarding upcoming cruises & I've thought - huh? just look at their sig, it's right there. Also, I regularly read the fashion board. I've noticed there that a lot of the posters don't even have sigs.

I love them and have them turned on. It helps me recognize the people I know and I like some of the creativity. I want to emphasize the word "some", not all. Some people get carried away.
Also, if you're insightful you can gather a lot about a person by their signature;) .
I have to admit I'm confused by those of you who say you don't like them and don't view them, but still have a signature. Something strange in that in my mind. If you don't enjoy other's signatures, why in the world would you think they would enjoy yours?:)
Incidently, there is no difference at all in how a page loads whether I have them turned on or off. I've tried it both ways ... no difference.

To each his own.Go on a dialup connection and see if it makes a difference. It will! When we went on the world cruise, I turned off the signatures, avatars, and graphics. Yes I missed them, but pages loaded sooooooooo slow on the onboard connection that I did not want any extra stuff to slow it down more.
There have been several times that a poster asked a question but left out a little detail, like what ship or when they were sailing that would affect the answer to the question. By looking at the signature I could fill in the blanks and give a better answer.

Thank you too, Lisa, for displaying your cruises in your signature. We appreciate your acknowledging our upcoming cruises, which is the reason we display them in our signatures. So many experienced cruisers have links to their photos and reviews on their signatures, and a lot of us benefit from them.

I don't view the signatures, but as you have noted, SOME people like them, so why would I not have a short signature for them to see? I don't understand why I shouldn't have a signature because I don't view them. The signature isn't for me, it is for others to see.

I have the signatures turned off, too. There's just too much stuff to wade through for me. I was on another board last night and there were so many critters running around and so much flashy stuff that I had to get out of it. Some people just don't know when to quit. It never occurred to me that some people would find me less credible because I haven't listed my cruises, but if that's the case, then I guess I'll have to live with it.

There's an old military saying, regarding the display of medals and ribbons... "I read his chest, I know the man". ... but the man is still the same man whether displaying the maedals or not.
The signatures serve somewhat the same purpose. It's easier to get a quick read on a person with a signature, but if you want to really get to know a person, reading the body of the posts will be the best way.
Sometimes there is a post from someone that I don't recognize that seems a little off the wall, so to speak. I often use the "show all posts by..." feature to see what else they've posted before wading into the fray. It's another way of getting to know the person behind the screen name.

Grumpy, we're on the same page. I do the same thing when a post just seems off the wall. The signatures help me and also, over time I begin to recognize people better with them.
Those without avatars or signatures are less recognizable to me unless they post frequently.
Unless you have a dial-up connection, I'm puzzled about "wading through" signatures. I simply scroll down to the next post. I just don't see the signatures as being in the way at all.

LauraS had a sticky not long ago asking people to please try to shorten their signatures, but her plea seems to have had no effect. She even suggested people list their cruises with commas instead of the endless lists we see. I don't think many people even bothered to read her thread.
I do find it funny when I see a one sentence post and about an 8 inch signature. When we post, we can turn our own signature off if we want. Maybe for a brief post, that's a good way to go.

I have always thought that a lot of the problems on CC are caused by the unnecessary 'stuff' that has to get downloaded, but everybody said I was wrong. Laura must now have a reason for asking for shorter sigs.
Sometimes someone will quote an ENTIRE very long post or a 12" review just to answer one sentence in it with one word! (You can click the 'quote' function and then delete all but what you want to reply to instead of leaving the whole quoted post up there, btw.) Then comes a few blank inches, then a list of all the cruises they have ever been on (sometimes 10, 15, 20) as far back as the 60s or before, than a fancy sig and maybe some swaying palm trees and glitter, then a countdown clock for the next 4 cruises! All for one short reply of less than a sentence sometimes. No wonder so many people delete all sigs. ;)

I try to edit the quoted text down to the pertinent sentence or paragraph, but I do quote. You may remember what you said, but on this thread, right now you have 4 posts. If I were to wait until a couple more people post and then just said I agree with you and did not quote, how would anyone know what I was agreeing with? That you aren't credible? Sometimes after a person has posted a long review, I've seen where a person felt the need to quote the entire review only to say, "Thanks for the review". I just don't understand that. This thread is about opinion poll on signatures. You just post your opinion and leave it; you don’t have to fight over it. If you don’t want to see the signature, you have a choice to turn it off. There is no such thing as who is right, who is wrong? Everyone who posted here is right and let us leaves it that way.

As far as "leaving it that way", once you're here awhile you'll come to find out nobody ever just "leaves" it:D , i.e. that's why we talk about "dead horses" so much!!!

I agree completely, Peaches!:)
Gee Whiz, Heather, you and I are agreeing way too much lately! People will begin to wonder what's happening. :D
(BTW, I'm a Brighton girl, too. Saw you mention that the other day. I just bought my third summer handbag this year and I keep telling DH- 'Oh, that's an old one, you just don't remember it'! Hard to believe he keeps falling for this old trick.)

I wonder why you asked why my posts are in "bold" type? Did you not start from the begining and notice that a couple of others posted in bold as well as "large" type and in various shades of color a couple of times? (Some in jest because one posted was having some problems.)

I wonder why you asked why my posts are in "bold" type? I asked you because I was also responding to a previous post you had made.
Did you not start from the begining and notice that a couple of others posted in bold as well as "large" type and in various shades of color a couple of times? I did start from the beginning, in fact, I started this thread.
So, would you care to answer my question? Again, I'm not being critical. I'm just curious.

I was referring to when I'm on a ship and paying the exorbitant per minute rates. That's when my patience wears thin. We have unlimited broadband service here at home so everything loads pretty quick.
I realized after I posted that you were referring to using dial up on the ship and not on land, my mistake. :)
By the way, my sister and brother in law have just had 28 days on the Prinsendam doing the Amazon trip and loved it, especially the ship, officers and crew. They were first cruised on her when HAL first took over, on a cruise from Mombasa to Singapore and said it is better than ever!

I know, Peaches ... I noticed! Who'da thunk it??;) Hey, when you're right, you're right:) (which lately is most of the time).
Re: Brighton ... I can relate. Just today I put one of mine back into its nice white pouch to change to another. I play the same game you do with DH. I find if you just walk around the house with it a few times when he's not home, you can then say "this old thing???":D .
Sorry, all! I know I'm OT, but in a way Brighton and Chico's ARE my signature!!!

Why not ask the question to others who also type in bold or use large font? Why ask the question only of me?

KK,
I wondered the same thing. Why single out one person?

I'll be bold;) and ask everyone. I have always wondered why someone would change the font and click on "bold" every single time. I will do it sometimes when I really want to drive home my point, but I can't imagine going to the trouble every single time.
So "bold" posters, why?:D

Why not ask the question to others who also type in bold or use large font? Why ask the question only of me?I thought I answered this question already.
I asked you because I was also responding to a previous post you had made.I wasn't singling you out, I just thought I'd add the question on to a response to one of your posts. In fact, I do wonder why certain members always seem to post in bold and one in particular member who posts in bold and large print too.
So I guess you aren't going to answer the question.

Actually, I'm just wondering the same thing as Heather, why?

Bruce,
It really sounded like you were stalking KK. Sometimes it is difficult to actually know what someone means when they post.
Heather also asked but her post reads very different. At least to me.
Thanks for clearing it up. :)
Maybe one of the posters that always uses bold will answser. ;)
