Has anyone taken the ferry to Stone Island on their own instead of part of a tour? I read on TripAdvisor that we would have a better time doing it on our own.

If you've done that, how much is there that you can walk to? Would it be better to take a cab from where the ferry lets you off to a restaurant like Victor's? (I read about that place on TripAdvisor, too)

I have had a difficult time finding information about Stone Island. Here are bits of information, nothing specific on things to do.
The ferry is an outboard motor boat holding about twelve people and is a ten minute ride. The ferry terminal is a short walk from the ship; walk to the street, turn left, near the end is a dirt road, turn left again to the ferry.
I've heard the beaches are beautiful and there is a golf course there.
Tours are offered by Ole and Mazatlan Frank is connected.
This information is from Mazatlan Frank and a book called Mazatlan Is Paradise.
I have heard that the vendors are demanding.

Well, I think it may be a self-tour or staying on the ship for a relaxing day there. We like to get off the ship while in port but keep the majority of our cruise low-key.

Anyone else have information about Stone Island??

We took the ferry to Stone Island in March. When we got off the ship we took a taxi downtown (for a massage), then we took a taxi to the ferry. The cost was $1 round trip. I don't think we were at the same water taxi stop that people go to when they take Randi's Horse Tour. (I say that because after you take the ferry with Randi's tour people ride a tractor to the end of the beach). We just walked over a hill and we walked along the beach to Victor's. The day we were there Stone Island was not that crowded (especially compared to Cabo). We were the only people at Victor's until Randi came with her group. Everyone was very nice. I did not think the vendors were that demanding. Just a polite NO was sufficient for us. Our experience was very nice and I loved not having to deal with crowds.

I love Stone Island and it is easy to do on your own. As above poster said, when you exit the terminal turn left and keep walking (2-3 blocks) until you see the sign for the ferry. They run back and forth constantly. Victor's was crowded; we plopped down at Letty's and enjoyed boogie boards, chairs, lounges, beers, shrimp, etc. Also available were banana boats for $5/person and ATVs. Great place for kids; great place to swim. Highly recommended. Laurie

Thanks everyone! I've got plenty of time to plan this, but I enjoy getting all the information I can.

Thanks again.....
