Yep, we turned up on our favourite night with about 50 other people only to find that enough people had complained they wanted to watch a Basketball Game (8pm EST) on the "big screen". Princess caved in and cancelled our night (and to cap it all, Princess wouldn't re-schedule).
How embaressing and sad that these peoples lives were so desparate as to cry like babies if Princess didn't let them watch their basketball teams. Booh hoo.. Everyone of them could have sat in their rooms to watch it.
Anyone else experienced these sad type of people. Is one game really more important than other people and whilst on Vacation.
(Apart from this incident, we had a great cruise btw).

I am not a sports fan of any type. But I know that to some, the final four basketball games are very important to them.
Sorry that the Country line dancing was cancelled, but I bet there were more than 50 lined up to watch that game on the ship.
Most major sporting events are shown via satellite onboard, like the superbowl and final four. Just a part of life we have to learn to live with.
BTW-My husband has a great life, but also loves basketball.

very true T2K...
Just think, for every person who is dumbfounded by the concept of watching basketball while on a cruise, there are an equal number of people rolling their eyes over country dancing while on a cruise http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

When the big screens are installed on the Grand and Golden, it will provide an alternate venue. On the Caribbean Princess, they had the championship game on in both the Explorers' Lounge and up on the big screen. Both places were packed with fans.
Just completed:
Caribbean Princess Apr 3/04
Golden Princess Apr 10/04
Coming up:
Tahitian Princess Oct 14/04

You miss my point. *I* am a huge sports fan (soccer) but would never "cry" over it not being shown on a big screen. We don't let our children get their own way just because they cry about it. The CD said they had been pressured to use the room for this. Sad. I don't dispute your hubby wanting to watch the game but didn't your room have a TV. The room was pre-booked for another event and the people who had planned their evening around this were not consulted and had shown up only to see a BB game on.
If the game was THAT important, why didn't they stay at home at watch it. Next time the World Cup Soccer is on, (yes "world cup" means other countries too), I bet these BB watchers will cry again if they too are told their evening has been cancelled. They won't have to cry because I'm not childish enough to insist soccer rules my world.

Not trying to get into this battle, but as a fist time cruizer come May, I would have to think that these ships are big enough to let both occasions happen at the same time, or am I missing something here? Pretty sad that both couldnt just happen, I for one am not a sports fan, nor do I care to watch it, but I also am not a country line dancing fan, so I wouldnt choose to do that either, but I bet the ship is big enough for me to find something I like to do, I just think that it is kind of wrong to "cancel" something that could have happened elsewhere on the ship in the very least.

And that's your choice. That's the beauty of this world..everyone is different.
Some people may have booked this cruise long before the games were even scheduled. I think if anything, I'd say the cruise line was wrong for flat out cancelling the dancing event...surely they could have found another spot to do it.

Or maybe a whole bunch of folks asked the Cruise director and staff during the week if the games were going to be televised, and they decided to make that change?
I'm sorry your event didn't come off as planned, but I don't think you have to label the "other guys" as crybabies . . . unless you really DID see them crying.

No I didn't see them crying. That was the term used by one of the CD's assistants. A crybaby is rarely used to describe a "crying baby" nor someone crying. It's a term used in many countries to describe people who want to have their own way "or will scream and scream and scream until they are sick" - LOL.
Yes, I'd have been very happy if they had rescheduled the dancing but Princess said they did not have any 'other' available slots. And it wasn't like they couldn't watch the game on their own in-room satellite TV's.... as a last resort....
It's not a matter of what each of us like or dislike, it's a matter of showing respect for other people. The people who wanted to watch BB on the big screen decided they were more important. The Country Dancing was planned and publiziced. There wasn't even a notification before hand putting a nice country evening out to pasture.
Oh well. Next time we cruise, I'm going to insist they cancel Bingo for a big screen showing of a re-run of Dallas. Bobby Ewing, come back - all is foregiven (oh, he does)... (cry cry cry).. LOL

I'm not disagreeing with you, I think the staff should have figured out how to make both groups happy. But I think the blame lies with the cruise staff, not with the folks who wanted to watch the Big Game on the Big Screen.

I agree Nitemare....
And, for the record, I'm not sure if you could even get the reception for that in-room.
And besides, let's be honest and break things down to the bottom line.
If the lounge is used for country dancing.....the ship doesn't really make any money...
If you use the lounge to show a game, you're selling drinks out the wazoo for an extended period of time.....it's a no-brainer for the cruise line....do what makes people happy AND makes money
