We just booked the Rome to Istanbul cruise on Nautica. I think the prices the Oceania charges for the pre-cruise hotel is rather expensive, so I'm booking my own hotel.
Does anybody have some wise recommendations to arrage for the tranfer to the port from the city?? I'm aware that it is a long distance and that is way I'm asking otherwise I would just take a taxi.

Thank you for your help!!

Scroll down to the Ports of Call boards and click on Europe. You will find multiple threads about transfers from Rome to the ship.

To make your life simple:
Here are a few companies to check out for transfers and tours if you decide to do that too...

Thank you Darrell6t and ClaudiaF,
both of your ideas gave a good deal of information.

Claudia, I checked the websites you recommended and made reservations with one that was very friendly and professional. They answered my emails in less than five minutes and they provided several options.

Thanks again,

Jorge

Jorge,

If you do not mind my asking, which service did you select and what was the basis for your decision?

Cheers

Hello Confused!

I selected limoinrome cause they responded to my email almost inmediately and very professional. I reserved the Mercedes E class. I was quoted 135 euro. Transfer from a Hotel in Rome city center to the ship.

But after reading the thread you iniciated I learned about the train and I'm thinking about takiing the train instead. It is a lot less for sure. I have traveled by train in Italy and their first class is very comfortable. I would take an early train, just in case of delays.

Happy sailings!!

Jorge

The cruise ship terminal is a healthy walk from the train station - especially in the summer heat. Just make sure you're in good shape and that you've packed lightly! :)

And see if your driver will give you a driving tour of Rome before heading to the ship. It should only add a few extra Euros to your fare.

Jorge,

Since you have previously traveled on trains in Italy, a few questions:
1) Are the trains clean in first class?
2) Do the trains generally run on time, ala UK?
3) Are reservations available/required?

I appreciate your comments.

Regards

Are taxi's available from the train station to the port?

Cheers

Train may not have A/C...in mid summer I would not like to be on one that didn't.
:D

There are, but on a busy embarkation day, you just never know.

Hello confused,

To answer your questions: Yes, Yes, Yes.
The first class trains were very modern and clean and the food available for purchase is good, not the best, but better than Amtrak's.
We travelled from Venice to Florence, and then from Florence to Milan. Both arrived in time.
I made reservations online.
You have to understand that there are several types of trains travelling thoughtout Europe, so you will see many different trains at the stations. Some of them with wooden benches and others with open windows for air conditioning. However, if you are willing to spend a few extra euros and pay for first class you will be very comfortable in a cushioned reserved seat with air conditioning and a train attendant taking orders for drinks and snacks.
If I remember correctly, I made the reservations on trainitalia.it. It been a few years back, but I remember I had a couple of options as far as train lines.
Hope you get a spirit of adventure and take the train.
Happy travel

Jorge
