My husband and I are going on our first cruise this summer - Alaska, Ryndam. We are very excited and have been reading on line. I have found on the Holland America sites the "floor plans" of the various decks. But I still have questions - where are stairs? etc. Do they provide any type of a "map" to help you find your way around? My other question is that we have a room directly above the casino. Will it be noisy in the evening? Appreciate all the help I have gotten from this site.

Hello,
Hope you enjoy your Ryndam cruise. Have not sailed on her but have been on Statendam and Maasdam. You will find the stairs where the elevators are. Elevators are shown as boxes with E in them. The stairs are the adjacent areas with multiple lines (like stair treads)

You should receive a handy folder at embarkation which will include a map of the ship. If for some reason you don't get a map, they are available at the front office. There will also be 'you are here' maps on the wall on each floor near the elevators.

As for noise, depending on how acute your hearing is, you might hear some noise from the casino, but only in the evening, not in the morning. We have had a cabin above the Ocean Bar and only heard faint sounds of music. Not enough to disturb our sleep. If you are early to bed or a light sleeper, you might want to see if you can move to a different cabin location.

They will give you a map of the ship. Ryndam has two stair cases and two sets of elevators. Forward stairs and elevators and aft stairs and elevators. At each stop there is a map of that floor outside the elevator.

R&R - Welcome to Cruise Critic and HAL! The Ryndam is a wonderful ship and you'll really enjoy it. Can't say much about an Alaska cruise as we've not done one but I hear they're wonderful. (I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and have been to Alaska a number of times so it is way down on the "got to do" cruise list.) And yes, you'll get a pocket size deck plan for the Ryndam. I've gotten them when I've checked in at the terminal and/or it will be part of the papers in your cabin. The stairs, at least the internal stairs are located in the same areas as the elevators. Any place you see a bank of elevators, and there are two main sets on the Ryndam forward and aft, there will be fairly large set of stairs.

PS - Oops duplicate information....took too long to type and post. :-)

Hey Mike; I just went to the site you linked to the deck plans of the Maasdam. DW and I are booked on her for the Oct. 17 Southern Carib. 11 day cruise. We booked stateroom 205, a mini-suite on the Veranda deck. It's the last one aft starboard. It appears on that layout to have a way oversized balcony, extending all the way aft. Do you know if it's that large? Can any of my fellow CCers help with this question? Thanks in advance.

HarveyYou are correct that balcony does extend to the stern and you can see around to the other side at the end of the balcony. We had some friends in that cabin in Alaska 2 years ago and they really enjoyed it.

Thanks Bruce! We've cruised on RC, Celebrity, and Carnival. We always try to book staterooms facing back or the last one facing the side if there are none facing back. This will be our 1st Hal cruise. Now, we're even more excited, knowing we'll have a larger balcony. Thanks again!
