As someone who loves to ride trains, especially in the UK, I was considering taking the train from our hotel in Rome to Civitaveccia for the June 8th sailing of the Nautica -- Rome to Istanbul.
Have any of you travelers taken this train ride and did you enjoy it?
How long did the trip take?
Classes of seating available?
What is the distance from the train station to the port and is it an easy walk?My wife does not necessarily share my spirit of adventure. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions.

Be very careful of pick-pocketers!! They are everywhere on the train & will look for people who are busy carrying luggage & are riding the train for the first time. It is no problem if you are cautious & extremely safe--but just wanted to warn you. Look on the Internet & you will get information re: the pickpocketers techniques so you know what to watch out for. Also, I am pretty sure that the train station is more than a half-mile from the boat--which may be a long walk- depending on the weight of your luggage.

We've done the train from Rome twice and it's a piece of cake. The trip is about an hour and I believe there are class tickets available but we just bought a standard ticket. One each occasion we walked from the terminal to the port with our luggage. It's about 1/2 mile at most and a pleasant walk along the beach, but we're walkers anyway. So if you've got luggage on wheels and good weather, I'd say go for it. There are plenty of places along the way to stop and rest, even get a drink or a bite to eat because it is a seaside area. Enjoy your trip. We'll be making the journey once again in November and will do it this way once again.
It's very inexpensive too......under $15 if I recall. Put your savings into the cocktail fund!

There are definitely classes on the EuroStar - we rode from Rome to Civitavecchia in First Class back in March 2001 - assigned seats and they brought out a drink cart - it was nice and not much more than a regular ticket. On the way into Rome that morning we rode on a regional train with just one class of service and no one to help you on/off with luggage, etc.
It's just a 5-10 minute taxi ride from the train station in Civitavecchia to the port.

Thank you for your comments Mrs. Jones and JoePDX.
I really enjoy train travel and will probably take the train to the port.
Since I try to walk 6 miles a day (running is too rough on the knees anymore), the 1/2 mile stroll from the train station to the port is just a good stretch of the legs after sitting on the train.

Just off Regatta 5/7/2006, this train is a commuter train, I believe 1 class, very nice crowd, The track# from Termini Station was #28 @ the end of the station,a long wook, we took taxi's from/to boat, but it looked like a pleasant walk, depending on the weather. The Regatta was @ the end of the pier and you must add that in also. Have a great time on a great cruise line.

As you will see the trains are frequent and the trip lasts from a few minutes over an hour to an hour and 16 minutes. I have taken the trip three or four times and never had any problems, but remember to punch your tickets in the yellow boxes on each platform. You will see other people doing it. In order to walk from the station to the ship, turn right when you get out of the station and walk down the main street with the sea to your left. You can't miss the port, but depending on where the ship is docked the walk can be a mile or more. I know you want to walk it, and I have without luggage, but if you are dragging bags and the weather is bad (or hot) I suggest you get a cab.

Can you catch a train from the airport in Rome to the Port?

Yes you can. There's a train station at the airport at which you board a train that brings you to Termini station. From there you switch trains and head off to Civitaveccia. You can buy the ticket for this entire trip at the airport station. Easy! We've done it twice and will do it again in November. Good luck.

Well, I just realized you need to go from Rome to Civi, so my info is a little backwards, but here's what I just wrote: Yes, we took the train - easy. We bought "BIRG" tickets, which allowed us to use the buses and subway in Rome for free on that day. Was 9E roundtrip. This was 2 years ago in May - assume it's still available. From the Civi station, we took the train to San Pietro stop, right near the Vatican. You can see the dome when the train comes into the station, so it's fairly easy to get yourself there. Maybe someone answered this question, but 2 years ago you could walk from the port to the train station fairly easily (without bags), or take the shuttle that takes you from the port into the little town of Civi. Let me know if you want more info and I'll dig up my trip report.

Just about all train tickets in Continental Europe require stamping - so don't forget. If they catch you without a stamped ticket the fines are large, I understand.
If you don't have much luggage, and the weather is okay, it is a pleasant walk from the train station to the port in Civitavecchia.
