We live in Pittsburgh and are thinking of taking the NYC - Montreal (or reverse) cruise this fall. We were considering renting a car from Pit - NYC and then from Montreal back to Pit. Neither is too long a drive and would be cheaper and no less inconvenient than flying, especially if we can't get flights at the times we want (we spent 8 hours in the FLL airport last week waiting for our departure).

Does anyone know, or can anyone suggest websites, with info on car rental agencies with locations near the ports in NYC and Montreal, and does Princess use more than one port location in either of those two cities. Will downtown NYC car rental locations take us to the port in their courtesy bus? I did notice National busses dropping off/picking up at the FLL port. Has anyone done this?

Budget does have a rental site on West 49th between 8th and 9th Aves. This would be a reasonable hike from the pier. Keep in mind that the west side pier in NYC is a real zoo on ship days and not the best facility! This is one reason that RCI has recently moved over to New Jersey, and Carnival Corp is building their own facility in Brooklyn.

If I were you I would check into the the idea of renting Montreal to Pitts. Remember you are crossing a border! Car renters charge big bucks to pick up at one location and leave in another state never mind another country. Go on line to Alamo, Hertz or other rental site and check out prices for pick-up and delivery at another location.

I'm pretty sure all major rental car companies have offices in and around Manhattan. Enterprise is very good -- they will pick you up/drop you off from any location. If you need to be picked up or dropped off at a hotel or pier, they do provide transporation service.

One way drop off fees are expensive (can be up to $300 and if you're taking a car from Canada and dropping off in the US, that fee can be higher).

Have you considered Amtrak or an Acela train?
