For all of you who have been to Half moon cay-please tell me about the clam shells. I have already reserved one and i read that it covers two lounge chairs!
Are they easily moved around or are they anchored in the sand? How far over the lounge chairs do they cover? Do the lounge chairs have cushions or are they plastic?
Thank you so much for your input.:)

We've not been to HMC...yet, but here are some really nice pictures of the area. There are pics of the clam shells and loungers. Ziggy has three different "HMC & cabana" threads. I'm sure someone who's been there will come along and answer your questions...

I've had a clam shell in the past, and plan on getting one in the future. I do not know how easily they move, but do provide nice coverage for the chairs.

We visited Half Moon Cay last September and rented a clamshell. It was very nice and worth the cheap price. It had two lounges under it, but they had no pads. We each had brought a towel from the ship and spread those on them. I carried a canvas bag and stashed it behind the lounge against the rear of the clamshell. It was very secure and out of the view of others. The clamshell did seem to be anchored down. The earlier you get to the beach, the better. You have to walk a long way down the beach to get a clamshell once the closer ones are filled up. I would definitely recommend getting a clamshell. If you like being in the water, then the clamshell makes a nice retreat out of the sun for a little while.

The clam shells cannot be moved. Their "anchors" are already pre-set in the sand. The "shell" covers the chair completely. If you want to get some sun, you have to move the lounge chairs out from under the shell.
You are not assigned a clam shell until you get off the ship and report into the "desk" on HMC. The later you get there, the futher out you will be on the beach. Thusly - if you arrive early, you can really choose the clam shell of your choice.

We were on the Prinsendam at Half Moon Cay last Saturday & rented a clamshell..The clamshells are erected by the beach staff, when you present your coupon at the hut..Arrived at HMC about 10:30 & the attendant asked us if where we wanted to sit closer to the food pavilion or the children's playground..We opted for the children's playground as it was closer to the tenders.. (no kids on our ship)..The clam shells completely cover both chairs and are anchored in the sand..Thay cannot be moved around....As a matter of fact, they can cover three chairs placed close together..My friend came to the Island with us while her DH stayed on the ship, so we asked the attendant to place another chair in the shell..No problem! It was well worth it, as the sun is VERY strong..We live in Fla. & after spending only one hour in the water & walking to the food pavilion, we all were sun burned..We spent only a few hours on the Island & went back to the ship soon after lunch because of the heat...Get there early & you will have your choice of spots..Have fun..Betty
P.S. HAL had two brand new double decker Ferry boats that to take us to the Island....They probably hold about 150-200 psgrs each (don't quote me on the Number)..We may have been one of the first ships to use them as our Crew did not seem to know they were there & initially lowered our tenders...However our tenders were not needed..Of course we were the only ship in HMC & it was wonderful..Our ship only held 790 psgrs...when there are more ships in port, it's a mad house..

We were one of the first on the island and they didn't ask us where we wanted our shell set up, they just did the next in line. As this was our first trip to HMC we had no clue if that was good or bad, but we enjoyed our location. The shells really give you privacy which is nice. Thanks to another CCer's tips we searched for a couple of rocks and propped up the back of the shell a bit so that we could get a breeze flowing through it which was great!!! We also left our stuff there while we were out exploring, etc. and had no problems. Aside from keeping us cool the shade kept our belongings cool. I wouldn't hesitate to get a shell again (unless next time we can afford a cabana!).
