We're arriving in Ft. Lauderdale around 11:30am the morning of our cruise. I figure by the time we get our luggage it will be close to noon. Do people suggest taking a cab to the port or using the Princess shuttle? Our flight is not through Princess but I think you can still purchase their transportation. Any thoughts?

I would get a cab. By the time you get on the bus and wait for everyone else to get there, you would be on the ship having a drink by the pool. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Try Miami Shuttle. We had very good service from them.

Definitely a cab. It is only $10 total. I think the shuttle with Princess is $20 per person (I think)
Like sue stated, you don't have to arrive with a crowd of people. We got to the port around noon and moved through the line so smoothly! Before we knew it we were on the ship!

Cab! Always cab! 10 minutes - $10.00. No waiting for the doddlers. By the time the shuttle leaves FLL, you'll be onboard enjoying. Definitely cab!
All the best!

Port Everglades is literally right down the street from the airport, a cab is by far your most efficient and cost effective option. It's maybe a ten minute ride and cabs are plentiful.
If you would like to have a really nice cab I highly recommend Castro's Limousine Service (ask for Will). They usually have a car hovering around the airport and at the port (for the return) and are super nice. They drive loaded Ford Excursions so they charge a little more ($6.00 per person) but they do a really nice job. We use them a lot when we're in town for pre or post cruise transportation. Their number is 954-593-9052.
But yes, a cab is the way to go. Princess wants what? $20pp? And you have to wait for the bus to fill up.
Happy Cruising

Sorry I misread the original post - I thought it was for Miami to FLL transportation. I would use a cab if I was in FLL already. Nice cheap ride to the port and no waiting.

Has anyone asked a cab driver to stop at Publix or a liquor store before going to the port? If so, do they charge you extra or do you just give them an extra tip for stopping /waiting?

We stop every time at a drug or grocery store to pick up sodas and juice. A couple extra bucks for the time/distance, a little bigger tip, SO worth it.

The cab driver will certainly stop anywhere on the route to the port. Just remember though to expect to pay a little more on the meter for extra distance and time.

I agree with taking the cab. On our last cruise we landed at 10:30, got our bags, took a cab, got in line and went thru check in and we were in our cabin at 11:30. It was the fastest process yet. People that were on our plane and bought the transfers said they were about 45 minutes behind us in getting on the ship--and it cost them more.

We had the cab stop at Publix on the way to the pier. The extra charge on the meter was probably $2-3. + a little tip for being patient.

Does that Publix sell liquor and are they open before 12:00 on a Saturday?

The Publix sells beer and wine. There's a liquor store in the same shopping area. Publix is open 7AM - 11PM on Sat.
Here's the web site for Publix's store hours:

Am I right then, in assuming that one can take beer, wine, soda, and liquor onto the ship? Does one need to put it in the suitcases or carryon?

When you gt off the ship there will be about 1,000,000 cabs right outside the pier door. It's is the regular route for FLL cabbies...FLL ---> Port Evergaldes ---> FLL...
