View Full Version : Queen Mary hotel - anyone stay there?

Has anyone stayed at the Queen Mary hotel? Would you stay there again?

Is there much of a difference between a First class deluxe stateroom and a Deluxe stateroom? How large are these rooms? Or is a family stateroom much larger and worth the extra $30/night?

I tried calling but was on hold for 15 minutes and gave up.

Any perks to staying here and then getting on a ship right after the stay?

Coral--We have stayed there about four years ago. We were upgraded to a royal suite. It was not very fancy but very interesting. Most of the furnishings and the plumbing were all original. I think the higher the price the more authentic the cabin. I can recommend that you avoid the inside cabins as the ones that we saw were very small and cave like. Now that I have cruised I might want to stay there just once more to do some "now and then" comparison. It was a great experience for one night but the price would really have to come down for me to stay there again.

Doris - what an upgrade!

I reserved a First Class stateroom but have no clue if it is an inside or outside cabin.

We stayed there years ago and loved the experience and being able to "potter" about the ship - not sure if we would do it again but for the been there done that list it was great - I agree with Doris would steer clear of the inside cabins.

There's definitely IMHO an atmosphere about her - make sure you have a look at the painting of the ship over the mantlepiece - one of those paintings that follows you!

Coral--It sounds like a fabulous upgrade but really it was quite a basic cabin. Folks back then evidentally had much lower expectations.

Sue--No spirits there, but boy will I have some stories for you when we get together in Oct. We live in an old mining town and had a ghost in our old house. Also have had a few other encounters. Lets have a couple drinks, find a dark corner and swap ghost stories. I'd say lets go for the campfire but Princess would probably frown on that http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I met this couple on my Alaskan cruise last year - they were both employed by a large mutual fund type company. In their spare time, they run a ghost business. They were one of those couples who I constantly saw - I was seated at dinner with them 2x, had 2 shore excursions booked with them, etc. . Fascinating couple. The pictures on their website look impressive http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Dosi - here you go:

I hadn't thought of them for awhile until tonight and then I went searching for their website. They were a very nice couple.

I probably should clarify - they go ghost hunting and take pictures/video of sightings. You can look at the website and figure out what they do.

Can you tour the hotel? I vaguely remember seeing it when I was about 10 and thought it would be nice to revisit before my Diamond cruise in December?

No one has mentioned that The Queen Mary has renovated some of the rooms and they are very nice. They also have rooms that they kept as close to original as possible. For one night it is definately and experience and if you love cruising you will love walking around and exploring the ship in detail. You will also have the advantage of being in walking distance of your cruise ship as long as you are leaving from the Long Beach terminal.

Lucky Max--Yes they do offer a tour of the ship. You might want to check out the website for times and cost.

Yes, when I stayed there in July 2003 there was one section that was being renovated. Walked through the hallways of the closed section and felt like I was definitely being watched.

If anyone does stay there, the restaurants on board are superb... Sir Winston's and the other restaurant on the promenade deck (sorry, forget the name). Also the Sunday champagne brunch in the Grand Salon is a must. The variety is incredible and everything was very very good.

We had planned on visiting the QM when in CA recently, but time just got away from us. We saw her from a distance when we stayed in LGB at the Hyatt, and planned on visiting when we returned and stayed at the Sheraton in San Pedro. I wanted to watch the Regal set sail from San Pedro and there wasn't time for everything.

The tours are $24.95, and there is a 2 for 1 coupon in one of the touristy books we had. Don't recall the name, somethig Long Beach and it is about 4" X 6" and pretty thick. The coupons were in the middle.

We stayed there in June of 2002. Our cabin was a little seedy, but very interesting. It had a lot of solid wood paneling, and the bathroom seemed to have the orginal fixtures. We had a good time looking over the ship and dining on board. I kept an eye open all night looking for ghosts and was a little disappoint in the morning because I didn't see any.

Ive been on the tour -- and roamed around---- I have read that since Carnival now leaves from here that the Queen Mary is more popular-- and area is being revitalized again-----it's cabin/room are small but the atmosphere is worth it----
Enjoy - cheers
