I am sailing for first time Jan 16 2005 on the star princess. What does the cruise credit do for you?

Not sure what you mean by cruise credit.
Do you mean onboard credit? If so, then this amount of $$ is credited to your account.
For instance, on my booking for the Star Princess to Aus/NZ, part of my quote included $200 per cabin onboard credit, so my friend and I each got $100 credit. It appears on your final bill.

Cruise credit is BAD http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif... don't take it, I will "dispose" of it for you, send it over.
It is MONEY... take it and run, drink, gamble or shop!!!!!!!!

There's different types of credits. One might be a credit to be applied to your booking cost in which case your final payment will be reduced by the credit amount.
More likely you're getting a "shipboard credit". This is applied to your shipboard account just like cash for payment for things like drinks, photos, excursions, and the like. One word of caution -- it's a "use it or lose it" arrangement. If your shipboard ourchases don't add up to the amount of the credit you can't take the left over amount and get cash or apply it to a future sailing. That rarely happens but I have heard of some folks getting a $200 credit, only spending $100 or so on board, and basically wasting the difference. Never happens to me.
