let me start by saying this was my second overall cruise but its 20 years since the first one so one could argue i am pretty new to all this

first impression is the cruise was fabulous. there were few glitches (more on that later) but overall it would be hard to knock this cruise

FOOD

the food was great. never had one bad meal. we tried every variety from the lido to the dining room and always had exceptional service and great food. the one main letdown might be the deseert extravaganza that was anything but. i know its hard to knock dessert but in this case it was easy. there was no chessecake for one thing and none of the items presented were new. most had already been offered in the lido or the dining room. staying up late for that when the next days port was at 7am was also a letdown. dont get me wrong they tasted great there was just nothing extravagent about it.

dinner in the dining room was excellent. our 2 servers (anton and banu) were both exceptional and both readily deserved the extra tip i gave them at the end of the trip. food was great and well presented each night

DRESS CODE

since its always a hot topic i thought i would address the dress code in the dining room here. it was followed pretty closely. on formal nights i only saw one person on each of the 2 nights that did not at least wear a suit and tie. many tuxes were present. it was very nice

informal really has to be dropped by HAL as a night. no one knew what it meant. it was not explained in the daily program. i saw everything from tuxes to jeans. i wore a suit, no tie. but i spoke with numerous guests who had no idea what was meant by informal. most guests assumed it was another word for casual and thats how they dressed

irregardless nothing was ever said in the dining room. jeans were not only welcome on casual night they were encouraged especially since our port calls ran right into dinner time each night

all in all it did not detract from dinner and everyone got the same service. even on casual night the table next to us dressed up. they were both in their late 70's i would guess and both admitted they were too old to change. dressed up for dinner was how they cruised. more power to them
so long as they were comfortable. we were told numerous times during the cruise that it was our vacation and to dress how we felt.

oh yeah and the dress code did not carry on past dinner. i would say 65-70% of the ship changed after dinner and nothing was mentioned about it at all on the ship

PORTS OF CALL

all were very good and well organized with numerous activities
all but one of the ports calls began at 7am. i guess on most cruises that is pretty typical. it wasent a hardship per se but when your dealing with a 4 hour time change like i was the 7am port call was hard to deal with. but we still had plenty of time to enjoy each port so no quibbles really

once again cruisecritic.com does a phenominal job of correctly showing that stuff will be available to do in port for short excursions even if you dont book ahead. even in Juneau where 4 boats were in port. we still could have taken any kind of shore excursion we wanted booking right on dock and much cheaper than what we being offered on board the boat

anyone going to alaska needs to keep this in mind. while it might not always be the case i would feel pretty confident that one could do what they wanted when they wanted regardless of reservations. our tour guide in juneau did say that there were several dates in the summer when over 14000 people would be in port at the same time. on our day there was only 7000

SHOWS

all in all i thought the shows were pretty good. we had a comedian and a magician. the rest of the nights were taken up by the holland america hired singers who did shows. while they were not broadway they were not bad at all and every seat was full for the early show each night. the final night at sea was a karoke show involving guests on the ship. it sounded real corny when it was announced but it was great

we were told later that the singers were completing week 51 of a 52 week stint at sea and they were all ready to go home. but it didnt show on stage

GLITCHES

there really was only a couple. mostly we didnt like the way the last 24 hours was handled. Hubbard glacier was our last stop. we were supposed to be there from 7am to 11am. but we hightaled it out of the area at 930am and they scheduled the disembarkation talk for 1015 am to make sure we all left the deck. we were told that everything would run smoothly
the schedule for that day left much to be desired. we all had to be up very early as the first group was leaving the ship at 6am yet many events were scheduled very late anyway. the final and only show of the night was at 945 and the final bingo game was at 1015pm(didnt start until almost 1045). i had played bingo all week so i wasent passing on a chance at $2500+ but i dont think the schedule was fair

of course the last night comes the weekly fire alarm i had read so much about on HAL> and it comes at 345am

we were supposed to dock in seward at 7am but during the day on thursday i noticed the ship was moving and its fastest possible speed so i started asking some questions. all anyone would tell me at the time was they were trying to make port. well we made port allright. we made port at 4am

so very loud docking followed the 345am wake up call. it would take a while but i would finally find out why we had rushed later

the boat was broken into 20 groups and at first each group left exactly when they were told. we had booked our own stuff after the boat so we were in group 20 and we were told to expect to be off the boat at 830

until 8am everything ran smoothly then the announcements stopped. from 8am to 930 no one left the boat. we had been told in no uncertain terms that we had to be off the boat by 10am no matter what

at 930 i went to the front desk. we had scheduled a whale watching cruise for 1130 and now i was starting to worry. the front desk completely blew me off and told me to wait for my number

in desperation at 1010 i went to the gangway and said look, i dont know whats going on but you have to let us off. we have plans. so they relented and we got off. the girl from HAL who met us at the end of the gangway said there was a luggage problem (she didnt elaborate) and our luggage should be off shortly.

when we reached the terminal we found out we had been lied to, apparenlty for hours

there was a longshoreman problem and they were holding our luggage hostage and wanted more money to deliver our bags. the reason we got in port at 4am was seattle told the boat to get there and get the bags off before the longshoreman clocked in at 8am. they didnt make it. of course everyone who booked a post cruise trip with hal made it but the rest of were left hanging in the wind

let me suffice to say it got real ugly from there. police and state police came in. there was a near riot as one angry customer blew threw security running after a longshoreman who mistakenly appeared on the dock

i finally grabbed a few quiet minutes with the hotel manager of the statendam and finally the situation got resolved at least to the extent we got our bags

we made it to our excursion with 4 minutes to spare. had we not made it this would be a much hotter email

my main complaints are as follows:

HAL changed our schedule without explanation

Made no announcements on board that there was or could be a problem with our luggage

Never once apologized i had to wait 3+ hours for my luggage

so yes it was a very good cruise but it had a very ugly ending and i really dont like the way HAL conducted themselves that friday

Welcome to comments

We have done the Vancouver to Seward cruise combined with a return from Seward to Vancouver on the ship before. The ship always gets into Seward very early because the train leaves for Anchorage at 7 and the buses follow shortly after that. Even though we do back-to-backs, we still had to get up early to have breakfast.

As for the dessert extravaganza, lots of us have said that it has gone downhill lately.

I hope that our time in Hubbard Glacier isn't cut short. We have been there before and loved it.

What did you think of Icy Straight Point? New port for us.

Loved your review.

Who is the captain?

Hotel manager?

Cruise director?

this is just my opinion so flaming isnt necessary ---firstly i follow the dress code for the evening because i know what it is

if people dont understand the dress code its because they didnt read all the info that comes with their tix and their ta (if they used one) did them a disservice by not explaining it to them

krazy kruiser i will get you that info. i am just back at work after 15 days of vacation and what with the time changes and all i barely made it in

i have that info at home and will get it for you

i have no problem with docking at 4am or even 5 or 6 what didnt make any sense was the lack of acknowledgement of the issue by HAL. the hotel manager even told me personally they were trying desperatly to get there as soon as they could. something about HAL being able to offload the luggage before 8am when the other guys had to take over by law. not sure i really understand at all

as far as the dinner comment goes i also totally agree with your comments that the documentation is there is people care to read it. it just seemed to me that no one did but i could be mistaken. i must tell you it was topic A on the boat that day

for those of you who want to know

icy was a new port and pretty straightforward

it was and will be a tender for sometime as there is little infrastructure in place

there were maybe 15-20 stores in one long shopping mall. a small museum and maybe 2-3 restaurants on the island

we did not take any excursions but i didnt hear any complaints from the people who did so i am guessing they were ok

i was surprised the captain actually made an announcment that it was a good day to stay on board the ship if you wanted because there Quote
wasent anything to do there

i think he probably wished later he didnt say that when the people of icy straight presented HAL with a welcome plaque

we were there from 7-4 which was more than enough time to explore what was there. we got off the boat at 11 and we were back on at 2

if you have anymore questions feel free to ask. i have forgotten more than i have written

Thanks for the info on Icy Straight. We will be there 2 times. The first time we have a whale watching tour planned. We already knew that it was a tender port.

Are the 15 - 20 shops close to the tender point?

Answer when you have time.

we had table 53 early upper for dinner. table for 4.

more info tomorrow

Thank you for your review. I'm glad that overall, you had a positive impression and enjoyed your cruise.

of course the last night comes the weekly fire alarm i had read so much about on HAL> and it comes at 345am

This confuses me. I follow this board pretty regularly, although I don't post much. But I don't recall reading anything about a weekly fire alarm, nor have I experienced such a thing on a prior cruise. Would you mind giving a little detail on this?

Thank you for your report. I'm always interested in knowing about the entertainment onboard; would you tell me about that?
For example, you mentioned there was a comic and a magician---who, and how, were they? Who was playing in the various lounges? Any comments on them?
Thanks! :)

Thanks for the info on Icy Point--like others we were very curious. We leave in three weeks and we're so excited about our first Alaskan cruise and being aboard the Statendam. Glad to hear that formal evenings were that. What was the weather like? I, also, am interested in the 3:45 AM fire alarm????
Heavy coats/jackets needed to walk about on decks at night?

i will try and answer everyone's questions

Entertainment:

i will tell you who was there but they are not likely to be there when you get there. for one thing the group who did the most performances is leaving the ship today as their one year on board the statendam is up. they didnt tell us who was replacing them

the magician was Sean Paul and Juliane who flew in from the Hilton in Reno to meet the ship in Juneau. not sure if he will be staying or not. it didnt seem he would be. he was outstanding though so for your sake i hope he stays

comedian was a guy named Scott Wood. also not sure if he is staying. he performed the first night and then kind of disappeared. we never saw him on deck

WEATHER

we were blessed with spectacular weather so its hard to say what your might be. while a coat on deck was a good idea most days only required a wind breaker. the temps ranged from the upper 50's to 70 during our week. juneau was the 70 spot and actually quite warm. it was even quite warm at hubbard glacier. my wife lost her gloves cause she didnt need them

CAPTAIN
PETER J VAN MAURIK

He was excellent. i am still looking for the other names that were requested

cruise director was someone named doug. i heard his last name numerous times but now it escapes me. he was excellent though

i have read on the board that fire alarms have become a real problem and we had ours our last night on board. you should also be aware that we got a call from the deck in our room one morning that claimed our shower steam had set off the smoke alarm. we never heard it but they called
i think the systems are all a lot more sensative since the fire earlier this year

i spoke with the hotel manager directly about our luggage situation but to be honest at that point i was past writing names down and didnt write it down i am sorry to say

except for the hichup caused by the longshoreman i dont see anyway the cruise could have been better and to anyone on the statendam going forward i know you will have a great voyage

the lounge acts were in my opinion pretty bad and doug admitted later in the cruise that he had "inherited" the lounge acts since he had just joined the ship in asia a few weeks ago

i dont think they will be making any changes. most were badly out of tune and or could not sing requests. we didnt spend a lot of time in the lounges

also be aware that for some reason the ships navigators never updated the info on the TV's. for example it was 51.8 degrees for the last 4 days of our trip according to the tv. never mind the fact it was almost 70 2 of the days they never bothered to make any changes

in fact they finally posted a message on the tv that said if you want to check the weather go outside. i am sure i will think of more

if anyone else has any questions or i forgot to answer one of yours ask away. i can also give anyone who wants it my private email if thats allowed and someone tells me how to do it lol thanks

the lounge acts were in my opinion pretty bad if
Do you know their names? They could easily be on the same ship I am some day soon, and it would be nice to have an idea before I go in.
Thanks.

Thanks for te review. We are doing a back-2-back on the Statendam in August. We have done this twice before, but not on HAL. Really looking forward to this trip. Alaska is our favorite place and are really looking forward to visiting Sitka, Ice SStrait, and Hubbard Glacier for the first time and returning to Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway.

Was the CD Doug Durnell? If so, we had him on the Maasdam over Christmas and he was really great.

Thanks all

SF49er when are you sailing?
we are on the 8/18 sailing so for us its only 72 days...but who is counting!

this is our 4th hal cruise and our 2nd alaska sailing. We did alaska last yr out of seattle and obviously since we are going back this yr...it was amazing. In our opinion best cruise/vacation we have ever done. we came home on a sat and were booking the next day for this yr. Its myself, my wife and two DD's ages 11 and 9

we were on the O last year and have sailed on the Zuid and Maasdam (which was our favorite) which is why we chose the Statendam for this yr

Dear gbeer424,

Did the offloading of your luggage problem with the longshoremen happen in Seattle or Seward? Your post mentions Seattle, but I was under the impression that the Statendam docked in Seward.

Can you clarify?

Thanks

gbeer424
June 5th, 2006, 12:56 PM
the luggage problem happened in seward. when i was mentioning seattle i was referring to HAL's headquarters in seattle

i cant get anyone at HAL to answer my emails as to weather or not the problem has been corrected. it sounds like most of you are doing round trips anyway. the service in vancouver was excellent

yes you are correct it was doug durnell as cruise director

here are the lounge acts:

felix rocks the crows nest

The sean bell trio plays the ocean bar

champagne strings plays the explorers

fritizie is the piano person in the piano bar

DJ veronica takes over the crows nest at midnight

they may very well still be there

have fun and enjoy your cruise as much as we did
