Hi! I'm a first time Princess cruiser booked on the Grand in November. I normally sail with RCL. She is supposed to go into "wetdock" in the first part of November but wasn't sure if the would install the big movie screen or not. I'd love to be able to watch a movie under the stars while out at sea. I'm really looking forward to this cruise and something a little different. It's nice to change things up every once in a while! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I don't believe the schedule for the ships has been made public yet. They announced the addition before they'd worked out whether or not they'd be able to do it while underway or in dry dock, and then figure out how long it will take their supplier to get them the screens, speakers, etc. Hopefully we'll know soon!

I'm still hoping that there will be some structural issue that will preclude them from installing these big-screen monstrosities on the Grand Class ships...if they're building additional Caribbean Class ships, put them there. Sorry, but my feeling is the movie gimmick is just making for a less refined cruise experience.

How many people are really going to book these ships just for the big screen TV? Yick http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

What's so refined about cruisng? It isn't the twenties and your not a Rockefeller. Cruising, isn't as depicted in TITANIC, only for the elite. It a vacation on a boat. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy some of the finer things in life, but a movie screen isn't tacky. Some of you folks, take this stuff way too serious. It's only a cruise, not tea with the Queen!
Relax, enjoy the movie at sea!

Since you put it that way, who thought we would be Ice Skating and Rock wall climbing on a smoke stack. But we do and because it works they expand it. Gimmicks these days are what sells the ships.

Relax, enjoy the movie at sea!

As Sue said, how do you know I'm not a Rockefeller? You're right - cruising is more and more becoming just a vacation on a boat. But it used to be a somewhat refined experience and that wasn't in the 20s...in fact you can find that kind of experience today if you look for the right ship. Unfortunately ships with big screen TVs hanging over the pool don't fit the refined definition. I don't happen to think it tacky, but since you mentioned tea, it's not my cup. We obviously have different opinions about that and just because you tell me to relax and enjoy the movie doesn't mean I will - just as I think you wouldn't enjoy tea with the Queen. The point of my post was that I'd prefer they not put the bloody things on ships that already have their own character and certain level of refinement.

And just to set the record straight, not all of the passengers on Titanic were elite...those who weren't drowned, remember? And as for taking this too serious, I think your post proves who is doing that.

quote:
Since you put it that way, who thought we would be Ice Skating and Rock wall climbing on a smoke stack. But we do and because it works they expand it. Gimmicks these days are what sells the ships.

I’m not so sure the gimmicks sell ships...there are plenty of ships out there - the majority of them, I would venture to bet - that sell without these types of gimmicks. I don't think everyone is ice skating or rock wall climbing when they cruise...only those who choose RCI - and that's one line I wouldn't choose. What gimmicks really do for the cruise line is attempt to make the experience agreeable to a wider population – which in turn sells the births. Rather than put some thought and effort into finding something culturally expanding or rewarding, or increasing live entertainment, or doing something which encourages passengers to talk and interact with one another, or provide some type of entertainment that is unique to a cruise, Princess is slapping up a TV. No effort in that - just turn it on and the passengers will entertain themselves, right? Just like sitting at home on the couch.

This is one of the consequences of overbuilding an industry. Another is the lower prices – which I think we all appreciate. But unfortunately there are many times when with economy comes cheap.
