Buried on another thread was a mention of Icy Straights as a new port. We went to Icy Straights and Hoonah on an RCI cruise a few years ago and it was a refreshing change. The local tribe had refurbished a hugh salmon packing facility into a museum and gift store. They also had nature exibits. It was the first year of its use and some areas were unfinished but it looked very promising.
Is this the same area that HAL is now going to ???
As far as new ports -- we took in Grand Turk and were disappointed. It was overpriced and if you spent 15 minutes there you had seen it twice. and 70% of the shops had not been opened or filled.

We also went to Icy Strait Point (http://vquill.com/alaska05/2005/09/thursday-98-icy-strait-point.html) - on the Infinity last fall. This is the same port (we heard from our tour guide that HAL would be coming in this season).
We thought it was a great port.

Dakrewser,
We are scheduled to go on a short tour of Hoonah when we visit Icy Point Straight. Did you take any excursions/tours there?

When we went to Icy Strait Point we were the first ship to go there. The cruise before us was supposed to be the first, but they weren't ready for them so we were first. We just walked around and walked in to Hoonah. There were a lot of Eagles right around Hoonah.

We did the "Remote bush Brown Bear Search (http://www.icy-strait-point.com/excursions_bush_bear.html)" tour, and it was great! One big old bear wandered across our path only about 20 feet from us, while we saw others fishing in the river. It was well worth it, one of the highlights of our 3rd cruise to Alaska.
