From the Digital Seas Website:
*CruisE-mail™ - Our unique e-mail service set up as a convenience for those passengers who either do not have their own email or are unable to access their own service provider. There is an additional charge of $3.95 for each outgoing (sent) message. No additional charge applies for received (incoming) messages. Time charges still apply.
But then, how do you receive it unless you sign up:confused: I don't think they print them out and deliver them to your cabin like they used to, so you would have to sign up if I'm reading it right.

Cruisemail, yes they will print it out and deliver to your cabin.
Used it lots of times for the QE2.

Used it lots of times for the QE2.But HAL is not QE2. I'm pretty sure that someone posted about a year ago that HAL used to do that, but no longer does.
I guess if we can keep this up near the top with speculation, someone that has used the service on HAL might find it:)

I have been wondering the same thing. Our son is having surgery on the first day out at sea and it would be great if they could send us an email letting us know how everything went. We will not use the internet while we are on board or would just set up an account. Of course we could set up the account if needed so we could receive this info.

The calling party can reach your cabin as outlined below and leave a voice mail if you are not there to answer, yes they pay!
Telephone
Direct ship-to-shore telephones are provided in each guest stateroom. You may easily place a call to friends, relatives or business associates during your cruise-reception permitting. Similarly, friends and family in the U.S. and Canada may contact Holland America ships by direct-dialing the following number:
1-866-HAL-SHIP (1-866-425-7447)
Callers should have the ship name, party name and the cabin number ready before dialing. Those at home may also dial each ship directly by dialing the International Access # (011 from the U.S.), Ocean Code # and Ship #.
Ocean Codes:
Pacific Ocean Region 872 Alaska & Pacific
Atlantic Ocean West 874 Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and South America
Atlantic Ocean East 871 Europe, Africa, and Mediterranean
Indian Ocean Region 873
Ship Numbers:
ms Amsterdam 324-437-011
ms Maasdam 130-2513
ms Noordam 324-602-821
ms Oosterdam 324-541-710
ms Prinsendam 324-412-610
ms Rotterdam 324-616-710
ms Ryndam 130-2562
ms Statendam 130-2515
ms Veendam 330-943-511
ms Volendam 324-596-816
ms Westerdam 324-412-810
ms Zaandam 324-644-212
ms Zuiderdam 324-530-410
For example: someone calling from the U.S. to the ms Amsterdam in Alaska would dial: 011-872-324-437-011.
Please note: All phone calls, whether inbound or outbound, are charged a satellite tariff. Outbound calling rates are posted near your cabin telephone and will be billed to your on-board account. These charges are applied to ALL calls including calls to 800, 877 and 888 numbers. Please do not use a credit card or phone card; your on-board account will be billed in addition to the cost of the phone card or charges to your credit card. Collect calls are not possible from the ship.

hope this helps put your mind at easeIn the cruise docs that i'm holding in my hands right now, the information says that if you call through the 1-866 number, the calling party has to place the charges on a credit card at $16.00 per minute.

Gotta say, that last line about the $20 credit made me laugh out loud, something I haven't done a lot lately. And the fact that nobody said a thing about the 250,000 shares of Enron.....priceless.

I guess the best thing would be to use your own Email address, pay the $3.95 sign up fee and check the mail once in a while on the pay as you go plan. I've done that on short cruises before and only had about $10 in internet charges, including the signup fee, for a 4 day cruise. If it is a matter of extreme urgency, the telephone, although expensive, is still the best option.

thank you for having the same warped sense of humor as i do --- was close to giving up that anyone had actually read it
