We are sailing on the Golden out of San Juan later this month. We are not familiar with the pier, is it Pan American? Is there a shop at the pier, or nearby, for Pepsi, water, wine and incidentals?

Hi Mikenstef,
There is a duty free store at the Pan American pier to buy alcoholic and/or soft drinks before your cruise leaves. However, you will find it to be a bit expensive. A six pack will run in the neighborhood of $4.00 but it is very convenient.
If your itenerary takes you to St Thomas first you might consider waiting until you get there. There is a KMart about 4 blocks from where the ship docks, and soft drinks will be about half what they are at the Pan Am pier. They also sell liquor at very reasonable prices. After you dock stand someplace where you can look down at the Havensight Mall on the starboard side. Let your eyes follow the street that leads away from the mall and you will see the KMart. The soft drinks are in the basement. If you take the elevator down you can tell your friends about your daring adventure when you return home! If you are out and about on the island ask the cabbie to stop there as you return to the ship. They will wait for you and then drive you the rest of the way back.
If you are on the itenerary that takes you to Barbados first someone else may be more help. I know there is a large shopping complex right at the port. I'm sure several places there have soda, but I dont know where to go to get the best price. Besides, you will have been at sea for a day and two nights on a ship that serves only Coke products. I know from being married to to Pepsi drinker that THAT is just not a viable option!
Have a great trip!

Your question brings back a San Juan memory: me on the prowl for cheap beer near the dock, then coming "home" with an overpriced 6-pack of Budweiser.
Only to discover they were 10-oz cans!
Shopper beware.

It all depends on how much time you have. I will suggest you take a cab after you have dropped your luggage and left all your things in the cabin, then ask the driver to take you to plaza las americas which has a Kmart Store right across the mall, there you can stock up with everything you forgot and/or need, Pepsi will be cheaper than buying it on the pier, if you need any other info on San Juan feel free to email me, regards from sunny Puerto Rico http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks to all for your replies.
Afussa,
I have some other questions about San Juan. How far is the Plaza Las Americas from the dock? Will San Juan be shut down on a Sunday in June? Will KMART be open? How about the shops in Old San Juan? Also-we have a late afternoon flight after the cruise so we can spend some time in Old San Juan. We have done the post cruise tour. It was ok, but we felt it did not spend enough time in OSJ. All we need is a place to store our bags. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Plaza Las Americas is 15 mins. from the dock by taxi unless you travel during rush hour and it will take longer.
San Juan does not close down on Sundays; Kmart will be open. But by the time you taxi there and back and buy your Pepsi, you'll have spent as much as you would on board, right?
