We will be going to Alaska the last week in August on Holland America. Can anyone give an idea of what to expect from the weather? Will we need sweaters and light jackets or heavy coats? What are the temperatures like durning the day?

I went in the second week of August last year and it was in the upper 80's and didn't rain once, which I guess is pretty unusual. Bottom line is, you can't be sure what the weather will be like so dress in layers that you can take off if it gets too warm. Bring a hat and gloves for the glacier portions of the cruise. I brought everything from shorts to a sweathshirt and fleece and wore both. Definitely bring a light rain coat.

A couple of years ago we did back-to-back cruises in Alaska the end of Aug, first part of Sept. We had a lot of rain - cool temperatures. Definitely needed rain gear and had to dress in layers most of the days.

Didn't see the glaciers calve much as the sun is lower and saw only a couple of whales as most had started their journey south.

Been there twice - last week of August and first week of Sept

Both times we had rain & both times we had sunny days.

I personally saw more whales during the latter cruise as they were headed south, but whales have a funny way of doing things on their own schedules ;)

Two year's ago June, the temps were well into the 90's. We never thought we would be sweating like pigs in Alaska.
