As a new digital camera user (Kodak DX6440), I've enjoyed folowing the discussions about digital services. On average, how many pictures can a CD hold? Since I will be using my digital camera basically for the first time on this cruise, I was thinking of having Princess transfer my photos over to a CD every few days to make sure I had a back up.

Depends on the resolution anywhere from a few hundred HUGE pictures to many thousand normally sized (for emailing). Either way, more than you are likely to have if you actually took the vacation rather that photographed it.

I currently use an Olympus C5050, a 5 MP camera. Shooting in High Quality (HQ) each photo consumes about 1MB of space, or more. I use a 1GB compact flash card and can get 843 pictures in HQ mode and about half that in SHQ.

The average CD probably holds about 700-750MB of data, so for me a CD would hold a little over 500 pictures shot in HQ and about 250 pictures in SHQ.
