Hello Stephen,
I know you have a painting of the SS France. But, have you done her in the Norway colors? If so, how can I obtain a print? If not, how can I obtain a print of the France.

Hi PE,
Sorry to disappoint, the only print I ever did of a NORWAY painting was finished yonks ago.
The FRANCE print is available from the World Ocean & Cruise Liner Society. Do you know them?
Let me know how you get on.
You can use my direct e-mail : prinsendam@hotmail.com

James A. Flood did a painting for the farewell transatlantic cruise of the Norway in 2001. NCL sold them, or rather the art auction on board sold them until they ran out. Although they are not available any longer by Flood, you might find one on the secondary market. His web site and a picture of the painting is at: http://www.jamesaflood.com/_crnrway.htm.
We got one of them on the farewell sailing. We have it in the den. He painted it prior to the sailing, but he painted himself in his skiff into the painting. On the day we sailed from Miami, he was out there in his skiff just as in the painting. Really brings back memories.
While we were recently on the Prinsendam, I asked the art auction manager and the HAL customer relations person on the ship about getting a similar painting done of the current Prinsendam. That is the first ship I've wanted a picture of other than the Norway. I'd like to hang it next to the Norway painting. Everyone I asked seemed most eager to have one too.

Liz,
The painting is already done! It hangs in the after stairtower.
Hopefully a print will be available soon through the HAL 'on-line' shop.

Stephen-
We studied the paintings on that back stairwell, the one of the Prinsendam, is the original Prinsendam I, not the current ship. We could not find the current design of the ship after it entered HAL service. Too many things were different. The only current ship was the Ryndam in Alaska. The customer relations rep said something about printing one of those. I don't want the Prinsendam I. I would like it as it currently is. I could be missing something, but we went over every painting more than once and although some of them were magnificent, they weren't the ship we were on. I believe that the only ship with the hull painted blue was the one of the Ryndam.

Liz,
Oops! You need to go back to the ship and study the set again.
There are five paintings in the after stairtower.
I can't remember the exact hanging sequence but here is the list:
PRINSENDAM 1 Cruising in Alaska (blue hull)
PRINSENDAM 2 Passing Eddystone Lighthouse The present ship) (blue hull)
ROTTERDAM 5 At Sea (grey hull)
STATENDAM 4 Arriving Bermuda (blue hull)
NW AMSTERDAM 2 at sea passing VEENDAM 3 (one in grey, one in blue!)
In the forward stairtower there are two pieces.... the panoramic view of the Wilhelminakade showing NIEUW AMSTERDAM, STATENDAM and MAASDAM and on the upper level....
In Majolica .... a ceramic tile painting of the present PRINSENDAM.
If you are in urgent need of a print of the PRINSENDAM 2 painting, let me know. I might be able to arrange to get a giclee print made for you.

Thanks for the offer but I just want to have one eventually. I am thinking they may have had one off getting it printed. It really was not hanging. There was an abstract object on one floor in place of a painting.
I will look again in October when we return for our longer trip. I just hope eventually they have a litho similar to the one of the Norway.

You know, in thinking back............we used to walk from the Lido on 11 down that stairtwell to deck 7 to start our morning walk. We never used that stairwell below deck 7. I'm basing my rememberance on 5 decks and that includes the one abstract design. That is soooo bizarre, but I'll bet what I want is already there, just as you say, waiting to be printed. Oh, that makes me so happy. I'll bet it will be there already printed by the time we get back onboard. Gee, that just makes my day. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Liz,
I'm sure it is there, you just missed it that's all. After all I should know what is there, I painted the 'dam ' things!!!! ;)
I doubt that the prints are going to be available on board the ship. This is something that we are trying to set of with the HAL 'on line' shop. Don't panioc though... somewhere along the way there will be a print.
In the meanwhile you can look for my book HOLLAND AMERICA LINE - The Spotless Fleet which contains all 80 paintings I've done for HAL.
Best,

I bought my "Spotless Fleet" today. I saw the first copy back in February but didn't buy it until now :o .
(Well, I held off on mail-ordering it, because I knew I'd be able to buy it today at the Ocean Liner Bazaar in NYC, and save on shipping.)
It is a magnificent book and one that every HAL fan absolutely must have!

Doug--
How much was it at the Bazaar?
Was less than $70 on Noordam :D
(then again, there was the cost of the cruise...)

Nope, $70 :) .
But well worth it, of course!
"Cunarder" was $75 when it came out (now also lowered to $70). Like everything Cunard, it is a little more expensive ;) !
I have a serious weakness for ship books, so I see quite a few of them. These are undoubtedly among the best I have seen. As I said, The Spotless Fleet is the one item every HAL must have. Unless you can afford to comission a real painting of your favorite ship, anyway!

And here I thought you were getting rich off them ;) !
I always appreciate ship books even more because I know that most of them aren't profitable.
Doug, are you coming to Bermuda next month?
I hope so! Nothing booked yet though. Will keep you posted.

Stephen,
Any word on the Lambertville gallery?
It is up and running! At the moment they have two pieces.... UNITED STATES at sea and the EUROPA passing Ambrose c. 1967.
The gallery is called the Union Gallery at No.4 Union Street.
When time permits I will send them more work. They are asking for old naval battles and such.
Best from bermuda!

Brought "The Spotless Fleet" over to my grandparents' today. They enjoyed seeing lots of paintings of their favorite ships, NIEUW AMSTERDAM (II) and ROTTERDAM (V) :) .
I am interested to see that you are doing some watercolors now. I really like them!
