We are taking the August 29 Canadian Rockies/Inside Passage Combo on the Diamond Princess. We have sailed to Alaska before on Princess and were very satisfied with the cruise. This is our first land - cruise venture and would like to have some feedback from anyone who has done the Rockies through Princess. The tour includes Calgary, Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper and rail overnight to Vancouver.

Hi haven't done the ships tour of those places but have been to all of them and they are spectacular! Calgary of course isn't much( just a city ) but the zoo there is easily worth 4 or 5 hours!
Lake Louise is so beautiful, as is Banff, you won't regret seeing them!
The rail trip is also a must do, the train will travel through some incredible scenery, and not having to drive those scarey mountain roads( we have) is a bonus as you will enjoy the view instead of freaking out about the windey( sp) narrow mountain roads! lol

I'm in the same position as pg. regarding visiting the spots you mentioned. For us, Calgary is the destination of choice for shopping for those things that you just can't find in our small town. Not necessarily what you are looking for on a tour. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif As mentioned, the Zoo in Calgary is excellent.
Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper are beautiful! If you have the opportunity to do a Gondola Ride be sure to take advantage! I was terrified on the ride up in Banff but it was worth every bullet I sweated on the way up http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif !
The train trip through the Rockies is a classic. I'm sure you will enjoy it!
One of the main benefits of doing the tour is that the guides will point out the most interesting sites and give you lots of history and background. You will get much more out of it than if you did the driving yourself and you will actually be able to see things rather than keeping your eyes peeled to the road every minute. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
Have a wonderful cruise and I offer you my welcome to our little corner of Canada. I hope you enjoy your visit.
Cruising! It's like being in the Garden of Eatin'!

We will let you know when we return in September. From the subsequent post it looks like an exciting time. I noticed you are from Lincoln..Is the Cornhusker Hotel still open in Downtown. It had a beautiful staircase in the lobby.

Fuz - sort of.
A long time ago (1982?), the original Cornhusker Hotel was imploded. A new Cornhusker Hotel was built in the same location and became our nicest hotel in Lincoln (with a beautiful staircase). A couple of years ago, we finally received an Embassy Suites on the other side of downtown (approx 6 blocks away - right across from campus) and that has become the preferred hotel in Lincoln.
The new Cornhusker was put up for sale a year or two ago and I believe was recently sold. Not aware of any changes recently.
I am assuming you stayed at the "old Cornhusker"?

Calgary is famous for it's stampede. Lake Louise is picture perfect with the Hotel there. Do do the Gandola ride to the top, bring your camera and binoculars. It is very pretty there. Enjoy the train ride, sit on the right hand side if possible. Have fun in Canada and welcome.

We did the Rockies trip with Princess about 9 years ago. I was surprised that everything about it first class. The meals were from the hotel menu not a standard chicken, potatoes and peas dinner. When we arrived at Banff Springs Hotel our guide told us to order this particular cherry dessert that was $19.00. Don't worry about the price. It's kinda like being on the ship. After travelling almost around the world, I can tell you that the Canadian Rockies is one of the most beautiful places we have been.

I had to put an extra "z" on fuz because of a changed address. Anyway I was in Lincoln off and on about three days a week for 4 months in 1986. I was able to see a couple of games (football) and it is a different world in that stadium.
